BACKGROUND: Cockayne syndrome is an autosomal recessive disorder caused by biallelic mutations in ERCC6 or ERCC8 genes.
AIMS: To study the clinical and mutation spectrum of Cockayne syndrome.
SETTING AND DESIGN: Medical Genetics Outpatient Department of Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences, Lucknow. This was a prospective study from 2007 to 2015.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Clinical details were recorded, and sequencing of ERCC6 and ERCC8 were performed.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Of the six families, one family had a homozygous mutation in ERCC8 and the other five families h

There are many ethical issues in the health care of hereditary neuromuscular diseases such as Duchenne muscular dystrophy. The problems lie in the protection of personal genetic information in genetic diagnosis and genetic discrimination. The idea that allocating expensive medical care to such patients with severe disabilities is futile should be avoided. QOL as patient's individual subjective perception has not been completely understood in the academic field of clinical ethics. From the view of a third party it might be thought that the neuromuscular disease patients' QOL is extremely low. I

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The current review aims to discuss the incorporation of facial recognition software into the clinical practice of dysmorphology and medical genetics.
RECENT FINDINGS: Facial recognition software has improved the process of generating a differential diagnosis for rare genetic syndromes, and recent publications demonstrate utility in both research and clinical applications. Software programs are freely available to verified medical providers and can be incorporated into routine clinic encounters.
SUMMARY: As facial recognition software capabilities improve, two-dimensional i

The eating disorders anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa are best conceptualized as syndromes and are classified on the basis of the clusters of symptoms they present. According to the multidimensional model, eating disorders begin with dieting, which is propelled into a full-blown disorder by antecedent conditions of biological vulnerability and genetics, premorbid psychological characteristics, family interactions, and social climate. The medical abnormalities present in individuals with eating disorders are due to starvation conditions and purging behaviors and will resolve with nutritiona

This Article discusses the Texas Supreme Court's holding in Jacobs v. Theimer that the parents of a defective child had a cause of action for damages against a physician for alleged negligent failure to inform the mother during pregnancy that she had contracted rubella and therefore might have a defective child, thereby causing her to lose the opportunity to have an abortion. The Article raises a number of questions that post-Jacobs courts probably will confront concerning the duty of physicians and genetic counselors to keep their clients informed; describes some social and medical developmen

IMPORTANCE: Clinical whole-exome sequencing is increasingly used for diagnostic evaluation of patients with suspected genetic disorders.
OBJECTIVE: To perform clinical whole-exome sequencing and report (1) the rate of molecular diagnosis among phenotypic groups, (2) the spectrum of genetic alterations contributing to disease, and (3) the prevalence of medically actionable incidental findings such as FBN1 mutations causing Marfan syndrome.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PATIENTS: Observational study of 2000 consecutive patients with clinical whole-exome sequencing analyzed between June 2012 and August

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease is the most prevalent kind of age-associated dementia among older adults globally. Traditional diagnostic models for predicting Alzheimer's disease risks primarily rely on demographic and clinical data to develop policies and assess probabilities. However, recent advancements in machine learning (ML) and other artificial intelligence (AI) have shown promise in developing personalized risk models. These models use specific patient data from medical imaging and related reports. In this systematic review, different studies comprehensively examined the use of ML in

OBJECTIVE: To describe the most prominent clinical features of a cohort of patients with oculo-auriculo-vertebral (OAV) dysplasia in Brazil.
METHOD: A review of medical records of patients with diagnosis of OAV from 1990 to 2010 was performed in a medical genetics center.
RESULTS: 41 patients were included in the study. Their average age at diagnosis was 2y 10mo (34,4±48,8 months) and the female proportion was 53.7%. Mean maternal age at patient's birth was 28.5y (min: 17, max: 46y) for mothers and 31.4y (min: 21, max: 51y) for fathers. Most patients (97.5%) had auricular involvement, with f

Through their ability to reveal and record abnormal chromosomes, whether inherited or accidentally altered, chromosomal studies, known as karyotyping, became the basis upon which medical genetics was constructed. The techniques involved became the visual evidence that confirmed a medical examination and were configured as a material culture for redefining health and disease, or the normal and the abnormal, in cytological terms. I will show that the study of foetal cells obtained by amniocentesis led to the stabilisation of karyotyping in its own right, while also keeping pregnant women under t

Genetic counselling is offered to patients with various hereditary cancers. At-risk family members can be identified by predictive testing and included in specifically designed screening and prevention programmes. Since genetic testing has far-reaching ethical and medical outcomes, it is usually done according to well-defined guidelines developed by medical societies, entailing extensive interaction between family members and medical health providers. This established procedure is now changing after three new developments. First, data from genome-wide association studies have identified many n

The present study examines the development of medical science during the COVID-19 pandemic in light of Ernst Mayr's critique of Thomas Kuhn's philosophy of scientific revolutions. Kuhn's model, which emphasizes paradigm shifts and disruptive changes in scientific practice, contrasts with the evolutionary and cumulative nature of biological sciences, as argued by Mayr. Revisiting Mayr's critique, we question the applicability of Kuhn's model to the COVID-19 pandemic by using vaccine development as a case study. We argue that the rapid advancements in vaccine technology, particularly mRNA-based

Family history is an important cancer risk assessment tool, and it is easy to use. The family history is integral in identifying an individual's risk for primary cancer and assists in the assessment of risk for a second primary cancer. For oncology providers, the critical family history is defined as including first- and second-degree family history, maternal and paternal history, type of primary cancer, and age at diagnosis and ethnicity. Family history should be taken at diagnosis and updated periodically. Despite the importance of family history to patient care, there are significant barrie

INTRODUCTION OR BACKGROUND: Genetic testing for rare Mendelian disorders represents the dominant ethical paradigm in clinical and professional practice. Predictive testing for Huntington's disease is the model against which other kinds of genetic testing are evaluated, including testing for Alzheimer's disease.
SOURCES OF DATA: This paper retraces the historical development of ethical reasoning in relation to predictive genetic testing and reviews a range of ethical, sociological and psychological literature from the 1970s to the present.
AREAS OF AGREEMENT: In the past, ethical reasoning ha

The implications of genetics and genomics for critical care nurses are becoming more evident, not only in the care provided but also in the numerous medications administered. Genetic causes are being discovered for an increasing number of chronic illnesses and diseases, such as Huntington disease. Because of the scientific and pharmacological advances, leading nursing organizations, such as the American Nurses Association, have established competencies in genetic knowledge for nurses. Such competencies help ensure quality care. Recent advances in the pharmacogenomics of therapy for human immun

The oral-facial-digital syndromes (OFDS) result from the pleiotropic effect of a morphogenetic impairment affecting almost invariably the mouth, face and digits. Other organ systems can be involved, defining specific types of OFDS. To date, 13 types have been distinguished based on characteristic clinical manifestations. An updated list of these types is provided and recent molecular data are discussed.
