Microbial communities underpin nutrient cycling across aquatic ecosystems and are strongly influenced by human disturbance, yet the implication for functional redundancy remains poorly understood. Lake eutrophication is a global threat to freshwater systems, primarily driven by human activities within lakes and surrounding catchments. We hypothesize that eutrophication alters functional redundancy of key metabolic pathways in lake sediments. To test this, we conducted a national scale metagenomic study of surface sediments from 144 New Zealand lakes spanning a broad nutrient gradient. Increasi

Antarctic deep-sea ecosystems harboured unique and metabolically versatile micro-organisms that sustained key biogeochemical processes under extreme polar conditions. However, the genomic diversity and ecological functions of these sedimentary or deep-sea microbial communities remained largely unexplored. Here, we constructed a comprehensive deep-sea microbial dataset of the Antarctic Ocean (dsMDAO) by integrating three newly sequenced Prydz Bay sediment metagenomes with 22 publicly available datasets (9 seawater and 13 sediment samples), spanning water depths of ~300-3500 m. The increasing marine transport of Hazardous and Noxious Substances (HNS), including bio-derived oils, raises concerns regarding their behaviour, fate, and ecological impacts following accidental releases. Bio-derived oils vary widely in composition depending on feedstocks and production processes, leading to uncertainty in associated spill behaviour and potential environmental risk. Improved weathering studies are therefore needed to support marine spill preparedness and response. Week-long mesocosm tank experiments were conducted to examine the fate and biological effects of three representa

Upper US Midwest sediment-basin design commonly relies on parent-soil texture classes and texture-based settling-velocity defaults (Natural Resources Conservation Service Conservation Practice Standard Code 350), yet conservation-managed fields can export fine particles that bypass gravity settling. Runoff from 13 edge-of-field watersheds in Wisconsin and Indiana showed systematic divergence between particle size distribution representations: volume-weighted (mass-based) D50 ≈ 30 µm (coarser classification) versus number-weighted (count-based) D50 ≈ 3.5 µm (clay-rich suspension). The transport of pathogens through porous rocks is often regarded as a negligible process unless fractures are present within the medium. However, sedimentary porous rocks may have porosity that is capable of allowing the migration of pathogens through them even if there are no fractures. In this work, we investigated the transport behavior of pathogens (namely Escherichia coli and Enterococcus faecalis) through a sedimentary porous rock containing calcite (CaCO3). Core-flooding experiments were performed under saturated conditions and variable head; the flow was continuously monitored, togeth

Frequent exceedances of recreational water-quality standards for enterococci are a persistent problem at many urban beaches. In the state of VA, a small beach in a highly urban area has more swimming advisories than any other beach. To investigate environmental drivers of these exceedances, we analyzed six years (2018-2023) of department of health data from this beach-Hilton Beach- and three other nearby beaches. As a complement to the historical analysis, we conducted field sampling of water, sand, and sediment at Hilton Beach for most of a calendar year. Historical data analysis showed that

The Perseverance rover recently discovered sedimentary rocks reddened by ferric oxides and peppered with bleached spots lacking these oxides. Some of these spots are associated with phosphate, iron sulfide minerals, and organic matter and are regarded as "potential biosignatures," suggestive of microbial iron- and sulfate-reduction and organic matter oxidation. Similar millimeter-centimeter-scale "reduction spots" occur in many ancient red beds on Earth. Although terrestrial reduction spots are widely considered biogenic, the available evidence is not decisive, and the proposed microbial mecha

The development of sustainable biocatalytic processes for pharmaceutical synthesis represents a major goal in green chemistry. Ene-reductases (ERs) are attractive biocatalysts for asymmetric hydrogenation of activated alkenes, yet their industrial application is often constrained by limited substrate scope and stability. In this study, we explored the deep-sea sediment metagenome of the South China Sea and identified 41 putative ER genes, with 22 successfully solubly expressed in Escherichia coli. Biochemical characterization revealed broad substrate specificity, achieving up to 90% conversion

Heavy metal contamination in coastal sediments presents ecological risks, particularly in rapidly developing regions like Southeast Asia. This study assesses the distribution, speciation, and environmental risk of cobalt (Co), nickel (Ni), arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), and lead (Pb) in surface seagrass sediments from the Pulai River Estuary, Malaysia. Total and sequential extraction methods were employed to evaluate metal bioavailability. Results indicated that Ni (18.47 ± 1.37 µg/g) and Pb (17.79 ± 0.44 µg/g) were the most abundant elements in the total concentrations, whereas As (19.04 ± 0.70

Five sediment cores of 40 cm length were collected from the Singapore Strait and analysed for emerging and persistent contaminants to assess changing pollutant trends and risk to benthic ecology. Data on the sedimentary accumulation of pharmaceuticals are currently lacking and yet present a potential threat to Singapore's coastal ecosystem. Pharmaceuticals occurred in the order hormones>non-steroidal anti-inflammatory>antibiotics and were highest at the sediment surface then decreased down-core. Similar trends were observed for individual antibiotics, azithromycin 0.18-0.51 ng/g-1, clarithromy

Microplastics (MPs) are recognized as a significant environmental threat within marine ecosystems. This study examines the spatial distribution of microplastics in seawater, sediments, and fish from the Persian Gulf. A total of 24 seawater samples, 24 sediment samples, and 40 specimens of Pennahia anea were collected from eight locations. Samples were digested, and MPs were filtered, counted, and analyzed using a stereo microscope, Raman spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDX). The results revealed the presence of microplastics across

Estuarine systems are characterized by mixing of freshwater with saline inputs, and varying flow magnitudes, flow velocities, and sediment dynamics; such complexities make it difficult to understand pollutant fate and transport within them. Models have been developed to simulate many estuaries in the US and elsewhere; however, gaps remain in abilities to rigorously simulate the interrelations between hydrodynamics, sediment, and pollutant fate and transport. In this study, the Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code (EFDC) is used to explore the impact of various variables and their setup within est

We present a detailed analysis of sediment fractions (clay, sand, and silt) for trace metal (Cr, Pb, and Zn) contamination post Cyclone Fengal from this study. It strengthens our knowledge of sediment quality and behavior of metals in coastal environments. However, based on enrichment factors (EF) and geoaccumulation indices (Igeo), the data indicate ranges from no enrichment to severe enrichment in relation to baseline values. In contrast to this, the lower pollution levels, as indicated by the sampling sites, are associated with lower contamination factors (CF) and pollution load indices (PL

Karst aquifers, such as cenotes, are important sources of drinking water and economic income, as well as representing natural and cultural wealth. In this study, metal(oid)s were determined in microplastics and sediments from eight cenotes (sinkholes) in the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico. Sediment samples were collected from eight cenotes by diving at different depths ranging from 2 to 32 m. The mean (±SD) of microplastic particles (MPs) in the sediments was 43.10 ± 50.58 MP/kg. The most abundant polymers were polyethylene (PE), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polyamides (PA) and polyester (PES)

Trace elements and isotopes (TEIs) are important to marine life and are essential tools for studying ocean processes1. Two different frameworks have arisen regarding marine TEI cycling: reversible scavenging favours water-column control on TEI distributions2-5, and seafloor boundary exchange emphasizes sedimentary imprints on water-column biogeochemistry6,7. These two views lead to disparate interpretations of TEI behaviours8-10. Here we use rare earth elements and neodymium isotopes as exemplar tracers of particle scavenging11 and boundary exchange6,7,12. We integrate these data with models o

Microbial communities inhabiting intertidal sediment show diverse metabolisms to adapt to hydrodynamic conditions. However, the priming effect of exogenous organic matter on microbial metabolic fluxes remains poorly understood. Here we investigated microbial intercellular activities in surface sandy intertidal sediment (0-5 cm depth, from the Nanhui tidal flat, East China Sea) under anoxic conditions by incubating with position-specific 13C labelled glucose isotopologues. Elevated production of 13C-CO2 and phospholipid-derived fatty acids (PLFAs) was observed after 96-hour incubation, suggesti

Chloroacetamide herbicides are widely used to control weeds globally. In this study, three acetochlor-degrading mixed cultures using nitrate, sulfate, and ferric iron as electron acceptors were isolated and determined for their degradation under anaerobic conditions. The degradation rates of all mixed pure cultures in a mineral medium were not much different at 1 µM, while the rates at 50 µM were in the order: mixed culture using nitrate > sulfate > ferric iron as electron acceptors, giving 6.70, 6.13, and 4.85 µM/day, respectively. During acetochlor degradation, 2-ethyl-6-methyl-N-(ethoxymeth

The impact of an environmental microplastic mixture (< 100 μm) on marine polychaete was explored to simulate the plastic exposure patterns in the natural habitat. In this study, Hediste diversicolor was used to mimic a real scenario exposure model of five common types of widely distributed microplastics sampled from the southern Mediterranean Sea. Sediment and polychaete gut were collected for microbiome and metabolomic analysis. Interestingly, high-throughput sequencing revealed a shift in bacterial diversity depending on microplastic concentration (10, 100 and 1000 μg kg-1). Noteworthy, sedi

Alkaline lakes are among the most bioproductive aquatic ecosystems on Earth. The factors that ultimately limit productivity in these systems can vary, but nitrogen (N) cycling in particular has been shown to be adversely affected by high salinity, evidently due to the inhibition of nitrifying bacteria (i.e., those that convert ammonic species to nitrogen oxides). The coastal plain of Coorong National Park in South Australia, which hosts several alkaline lakes along 130 km of coastline, provides an ideal natural laboratory for examining how fine-scale differences in the geochemistry of such env

Coastal sediment has been recognized as a hotspot of mercury (Hg) methylation and acts as an important reservoir for Hg-methylating microbes. The bioturbation behaviors of benthic organisms can significantly influence sediment properties and potentially affect the mobility and availability of contaminants within the sediment. However, the effects of bioturbation on Hg speciation and disposition in sediment have not been well addressed. This study investigated the influence of clamworm activities on the Hg-methylation process and the composition of methylators in sediment. The results showed th
