Slotted intramedullary hip screw nails reduce proximal mechanical unloading.

The current prospective and randomized study was done to determine whether fixation of intertrochanteric femoral fractures that lack a medial buttress with a dynamically locked intramedullary hip screw prevents proximal stress shielding. Stress shielding was evident by the presence of cortical hypertrophy at the level of the tip of the nail and often was associated with midthigh pain. Of the 80 patients enrolled in this trial, 64 still were alive after 1 year. Among these patients, 30 had the nail classically locked with two screws transfixing the nail in two separate holes (Group A), and 34 h

Neuromuscular electrical stimulation and dynamic bracing for the management of upper-extremity spasticity in children with cerebral palsy.

A prospective study was designed to determine whether the combined use of neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) and dynamic bracing was more effective than use of either alone in reducing upper-extremity spasticity in children with spastic hemiplegic cerebral palsy. Twenty-four patients (12 males, 12 females; mean age 8y 7mo [SD 4y 2mo]; age range 3-18y) diagnosed with spastic hemiplegic CP were randomly allocated to three groups: group 1 had two 30-minute sessions of NMES a day applied on the antagonist extensors without bracing; group 2 had two 30-minute sessions of dynamic bracing per

Effect of modified-live porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSv) vaccine on the shedding of wild-type virus from an infected population of growing pigs.

There are ongoing efforts to eliminate porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSv) from regions in the United States swine industry. However, an important challenge for the accomplishment of those efforts is the re-infection of pig units due to the area spread of PRRSv. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of PRRS modified-live virus vaccine (MLV) on viral shedding and on dynamics of PRRSv infection in pig populations raised under commercial conditions. The study composed of two rooms of 1000 pigs each. Ten percent of pigs of each room were inoculated with a f

Nonlinear behavior of sinusoidally forced pyloric pacemaker neurons.

Periodic current forcing was used to investigate the intrinsic dynamics of a small group of electrically coupled neurons in the pyloric central pattern generator (CPG) of the lobster. This group contains three neurons, namely the two pyloric dilator (PD) motoneurons and the anterior burster (AB) interneuron. Intracellular current injection, using sinusoidal waveforms of varying amplitude and frequency, was applied in three configurations of the pacemaker neurons: 1) the complete pacemaker group, 2) the two PDs without the AB, and 3) the AB neuron isolated from the PDs. Depending on the frequen

Shared and distinct electroencephalogram microstate abnormalities across schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and depression.

BACKGROUND: Microstates of an electroencephalogram (EEG) are canonical voltage topographies that remain quasi-stable for 90 ms, serving as the foundational elements of brain dynamics. Different changes in EEG microstates can be observed in psychiatric disorders like schizophrenia (SCZ), major depressive disorder (MDD), and bipolar disorder (BD). However, the similarities and disparatenesses in whole-brain dynamics on a subsecond timescale among individuals diagnosed with SCZ, BD, and MDD are unclear. METHODS: This study included 1112 participants (380 individuals diagnosed with SCZ, 330 with

Dynamic Cortical Connectivity During Propofol Sedation in Glioma Patients.

BACKGROUND: The behavioral manifestations and neurophysiological responses to sedation can assist in understanding brain function after neurological damage, and can be described by cortical functional connectivity. Glioma patients may experience neurological deficits that are not clinically detectable before sedation. We hypothesized that patients with gliomas exhibit distinct cortical connectivity patterns compared to non-neurosurgical patients during sedation. METHODS: This is a secondary analysis of a previously published prospective observational study. Patients scheduled for resection of

Impact of low-level laser therapy on the dynamics of pressure ulcer-induced changes considering an infectious agent and cathelicidin LL-37 concentration: a preliminary study.

INTRODUCTION: Low-level laser therapy is used in managing chronic wounds including pressure ulcers. Less is known about its impact on the healing process if an inhibitive agent e.g. bacterial infection takes place. Modulating non-specific immunity processes might eliminate bacteria if laser therapy is applied. AIM: To investigate the impact of low-level laser therapy on pressure ulcer dynamics considering an infectious agent and cathelicidin LL-37 concentration. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study comprised 6 patients with pressure ulcers ranging from stage II to III in Torrance classification a

New haemostat in thoracic surgery.

INTRODUCTION: The authors present the results of a promising method to reduce peroperative bleeding in thoracic surgery within large thoracic surgical interventions. Usage of a resorbable haemostat on the basis of oxidized cellulose in the form of cotton wool may minimize the cause of bleeding, mainly in patients with post-inflammatory thoracic complications. The strong point of this material is its easy application and malleability. Another advantage is the long-term antibacterial effect caused by lowering pH during its biodegradation. AIM: Retrospective evaluation of post-operative blood lo

Oscillatory Dynamics Serving Verbal Working Memory Differ in People with HIV and Are Linked To Disease Duration.

BACKGROUND: Medical advances have greatly improved the quality of life and extended the longevity of people with HIV (PWH). However, many PWH still develop neurocognitive deficits even in the presence of effective viral suppression, with impairments in verbal working memory (VWM) being among the most common. While previous neuroimaging studies have demonstrated altered neural responses during VWM, the underlying temporal dynamics and their relation to clinical indices of HIV remain poorly understood. HYPOTHESIS: PWH will have altered neural oscillatory dynamics in brain regions supporting VWM
