Most nursing home research has focused on predictors for placement, the placement decision-making process, or the effects of placement on the nursing home resident. Little research is available on family caregivers' experiences after placing their loved ones in a nursing home. The purpose of this qualitative study was to identify how family caregivers coped with the burden of post-nursing home placement of a family member with Alzheimer's disease (AD). Several factors that positively or negatively affected coping among family caregivers were identified. Family caregivers' interactions with the

In 1983 we published the results of 12 months of behaviour assessment in an old people's home. We noticed an increase in physical and psychosocial problems. In the following 18 months we observed a further increase, both in the cross-sectional group as well as in the longitudinal group. Newly admitted people have rather serious problems from the onset. Furthermore, there is a marked increase from then on. The most vulnerable category consists of those elderly who die or are relocated to a nursing home within a short period of time. In the past the temporary increase in care for this group was

BACKGROUND: The home literacy environment plays a critical role in the development of children's literacy and language development. Little is known, however, about the home literacy environment of autistic children, especially those with moderate-to-severe intellectual disabilities.
AIMS: The current study used a sequential mixed-methods design to understand how parents attempt to engage their autistic children in reading activities and support them in learning to read.
METHODS AND PROCEDURE: First, 63 parents (53 mothers) whose autistic children attended an autism-specific special school co

The present study is anchored in the view that hope is a resource that fosters better coping and parenting. It examines the self-perceived hope and parental role of parents whom the welfare services in Israel have assessed as maltreating their children. The parents were recruited in 2010 through facilities for maltreated children. The study sample consisted of 262 parents (68.4% response rate), divided into those who had at least one child removed from home and those whose children were all at home. Both groups of parents reported moderately high basic and family hope and sense of pathways and

BACKGROUND: Physicians are commonly uncertain whether a person with office blood pressure (BP) around 140/90 mm Hg actually has hypertension. This is primarily because of BP variability. One approach is to perform self-measured home BP and determine if home BP is elevated. There is a general agreement that if home BP is >/=135/85 mm Hg, then antihypertensive therapy may be commenced. However, some persons with home BP below this cut-off will have ambulatory hypertension. We therefore prospectively study the role of home BP in predicting ambulatory hypertension in persons with stage 1 and borde

This longitudinal study investigates the changes in bilingual oral language proficiency and home language and literacy practices of young Chinese American and Mexican American dual language learners (DLLs) before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Given that DLLs represent a significant portion of young children in the U.S., often facing socioeconomic challenges, understanding their language development is crucial. The pandemic's considerable impact on the educational trajectories of low-income immigrant communities is of particular concern. The sample comprised 132 DLLs (41 Mexican Americans a

Recently the National Birthday Trust performed a confidential survey of home births in the United Kingdom. A good response rate was obtained from midwives, who recruited two groups of women prospectively; those planned and accepted as suitable for a home delivery at 37 weeks and a matched group of similar women who were booked for hospital by 37 weeks. Some 16% of such women were transferred to hospital in late pregnancy (4%) or in labour (12%). This figure rose to 40% among the primiparous women in the survey. The survey report presents an analysis of 4,500 home births and 3,300 hospital cont

Thirteen subjects made consecutive long-term recordings of binaural intensity and pitch matches in their homes using portable equipment to assess hearing fluctuations. Two groups of subjects were used; one with monaural fluctuating low-frequency hearing loss (FLFHL) without vertigo, and one with monaural Meniere's disease (i.e. FLFHL with vertigo). The subjects measured binaural pitch matches using a 0.25- or 1-kHz reference tone presented at 60 dB SPL to one ear, and a loudness-matched test tone of adjustable frequency presented to the other ear during one to several weeks. Their results were

We examined differences in stressors and well-being for caregivers who care for a relative with dementia at home and those who had placed their relative in a nursing home. The groups did not differ in depression or somatic complaints, but nursing home caregivers had fewer social and interpersonal disruptions. Controlling for caregiving problems, nursing home caregivers reported more stressors due to ADL (activities of daily living) assistance, their relatives' behavioral and cognitive functioning, and lack of caregiving support from family and friends.

KEY POINTS: Patients transitioning from peritoneal dialysis to home hemodialysis experience higher hospitalization rate during this transition period. After peritoneal dialysis-to-home hemodialysis transitions, hospitalization rates normalize and match those of patients starting home hemodialysis directly. Shorter transition periods are associated with an attenuated hospitalization risk, suggesting that timely peritoneal dialysis-to-home hemodialysis transitions may improve outcomes.
BACKGROUND: Initiating dialysis with peritoneal dialysis (PD) followed by a transition to home hemodialysis (H

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the effect of a home exercise program on pain and quality of life (QoL) in TMD.
METHODS: Twenty patients were included in the study. The Group A received both a home exercise program and a physiotherapy program, while only a physiotherapy program was given to the Group B. Pain was measured using the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and QoL using the Short-Form 36 (SF-36).
RESULTS: Pain decreased in both groups (p < 0.05). Among the SF-36 domains, bodily pain, vitality and social functioning scores improved in the Group A, while only the bodily pain param

BACKGROUND: In some jurisdictions, persons who are convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI) are allowed to serve some portion of their prison sentence under home confinement as part of Intensive Supervision Programs (ISPs) which include pre-release psycho-education and close post-release supervision.
OBJECTIVES: Test the hypothesis that persons convicted of DUI offenses who have spent some portion of their sentence under home confinement, as compared to a historical comparison group, will exhibit a relatively low re-conviction rate.
METHODS: Using administrative data for 1,4

CONTEXT: Traditionally, intensive care unit (ICU) discharge has followed a tiered approach of managing cases, i.e., patients are transferred to a general or parent surgical ward or high-dependency unit before being discharged to home. This practice assumes that some additional time is mandatory to observe patients who are recovering from the illness. With latest improvisations in postdischarge services for direct discharge to home (DDH), the balance is shifting in favor of DDH.
AIMS: To compare the clinical outcomes and safety of ICU patients discharged directly to home with those transferred
