INTRODUCTION: Growth hormone deficiency (GHD) can be isolated or associated with deficiency of other pituitary gland hormones. According to age at diagnosis, causes of GHD are divided into congenital or acquired, and according to etiology into recognized and unknown.
OBJECTIVE: We analyzed etiology and prevalence of GHD, demographic data at birth, age, body height (BH) and bone age at diagnosis as well as the frequency of other pituitary hormone deficiencies.
METHODS: The study involved 164 patients (109 male). The main criterion for the diagnosis of GHD was inadequate response of GH after tw

The advent of biosynthetic growth hormone (GH) has been accompanied by a transformation in the clinical management of youths with short stature. An important--if not always explicitly stated--goal of endocrine therapies is an improvement in the psychological adaptation of individuals with short stature. Negative stereotypes regarding short stature constitute a potential source of psychosocial stress for the affected child and, in turn, the entire family. Nevertheless, studies have demonstrated that the psychological adaptation of individuals who are shorter than average is largely indistinguis

The overview in this paper focuses on ways of achieving optimal auxological results in puberty, principally in idiopathic and congenital multiple pituitary hormone deficiency (MPHD), suggested by the co-authors. We agreed that diagnosing gonadotrophin insufficiency/deficiency is difficult in young children and should be repeated in late prepuberty, but a firm diagnosis of MPHD helps avoid endocrine re-testing at the end of growth. The hypothalamic-pituitary axis must be reassessed periodically in evolving endocrinopathies, though current practice varies widely. Optimum age to induce puberty is

Uteroplacental ischemia may cause preterm birth, either due to preterm labor, preterm premature rupture of membranes, or medical indication (in the presence of preeclampsia or fetal growth restriction). Uteroplacental ischemia is the product of defective deep placentation, a failure of invasion, and transformation of the spiral arteries by the trophoblast. The failure of normal placentation generates a series of clinical abnormalities nowadays called "deep placentation disorders"; they include preeclampsia, fetal growth restriction, preterm labor, preterm premature rupture of membranes, in ute

Mitochondria are ubiquitous in eukaryotic cells. Normal maintenance of function is the premise and basis for various physiological activities. Mitochondrial dysfunction is commonly observed in a wide range of pathological conditions, such as neurodegenerative, metabolic, cardiovascular, and various diseases related to foetal growth and development. The placenta is a highly energy-dependent organ that acts as an intermediary between the mother and foetus and functions to maintain foetal growth and development. Recent studies have demonstrated that mitochondrial dysfunction is associated with pl

The study of human growth and skeletal development by human biologists is framed by the larger theoretical concerns regarding the underpinnings of population variation and human evolution. This unique perspective is directly relevant to the assessment of child health and well-being at the individual and group level, as well as the construction of growth charts. Environmental, behavioral (nutrition and physical activity), and disease-related factors can prevent attainment of full genetic potential for growth. Undernutrition is most often the cause of growth faltering and poor skeletal developme

AIM: Fibroblast growth factor 23 is reported to be a pivotal regulator for the chronic kidney disease-mineral bone disorders, working in coordinated ways with phosphate, calcium, and parathyroid hormone. However, whether there is a relationship between fibroblast growth factor 23 and magnesium is currently unclear. To address this, we performed a cross-sectional observational study in haemodialysis patients.
METHODS: We measured the serum levels of fibroblast growth factor 23, magnesium and other factors that are implicated in chronic kidney disease-mineral bone disorders in 225 haemodialysis

Repair and healing of injured and diseased tendons has been traditionally fraught with apprehension and difficulties, and often led to rather unsatisfactory results. The burgeoning research field of growth factors has opened new venues for treatment of tendon disorders and injuries, and possibly for treatment of disorders of the aorta and major arteries as well. Several chapters in this volume elucidate the role of transforming growth factor β (TGFß) in pathogenesis of several heritable disorders affecting soft tissues, such as aorta, cardiac valves, and tendons and ligaments. Several members

Standard growth curves for achondroplasia, the most common form of short-limbed dwarfism, have been constructed based on measurements of height, growth velocity, upper and lower segment, and head circumference in 400 achondroplastic dwarfs. These standard curves provide the basis to assess normal growth in these individuals, to aid in the determination of superimposed disorders, and to assess any growth accelerating therapy.

OBJECTIVES: Protein glycosylation is a crucial process involving the addition of oligosaccharides to proteins, which plays a significant role in stabilizing proteins and mediating protein-protein interactions. Mutations in genes associated with glycosylation can lead to congenital disorders of glycosylation (CDG), resulting in multisystem disorders. One such example is phosphoglucomutase 1 (PGM1) -CDG, caused by a deficiency of the PGM1 enzyme. In this report, we describe a patient with PGM1-CDG who was initially misdiagnosed with growth hormone insensitivity and benefited from recombinant hum

INTRODUCTION: The therapeutic potential of fucoidan (FUC), a natural polysaccharide, in metabolic disorders is recognized, yet its underlying mechanisms remain unclear.
METHODS: We conducted investigations into the therapeutic mechanisms of FUC sourced from Sargassum fulvellum concerning metabolic disorders induced by a high-sucrose diet (HSD), employing Drosophila melanogaster and mice models. Drosophila larvae were subjected to HSD exposure to monitor growth inhibition, reduced pupation, and developmental delays. Additionally, we examined the impact of FUC on growth- and development-related

Organized sports are governed by specific rules that aim to create or preserve fair play. An unfair advantage can be obtained by the use of specific substances or methods, also referred to as doping. The World Anti-Doping Agency leads the international doping-free sport movement and annually publishes the List of Prohibited Substances and Methods (List), which is used by most sport federations and organizations around the world. However, some athletes have legitimate medical conditions that require treatments that are included on the List. These athletes may apply for a Therapeutic Use Exempti

Short stature is a common presenting feature and an important concern for families of children with Turner syndrome. In this review, we summarize the data that shaped the updated international consensus guidelines for Turner syndrome published in 2024. The natural history of growth in Turner syndrome, the safety and efficacy of recombinant human growth hormone therapy, and the alternate growth promoting agents under consideration are presented. Timely, adequate growth hormone therapy can counter growth failure in childhood, promote catch-up growth and help many individuals with Turner syndrome

The increased availability of recombinant human GH (rhGH), albeit at a relatively high cost, has increased a demand for treatment of children and adolescents of normal height to increase their adult stature. There are no scientific reports on the efficacy and safety of rhGH therapy in this condition; therefore, the authors comment on the possible causes and consequences based on their personal opinion and experience. As in gigantism, when GH action and end-organ are normal, enough GH is expected to result in increased growth velocity. Short-term adverse effects related to rhGH therapy for appr

Short stature in children is a common reason for referral to a pediatric endocrinologist. Many genetic, nutritional, psychological, illness-related, and hormonal causes must be excluded before labeling as idiopathic. Idiopathic short stature is not a diagnosis, but rather describes a large, heterogeneous group of children, who are short and often slowly growing. As new testing paradigms become available, the pool of patients labeled as idiopathic will shrink, although most will have a polygenic cause. Given that many of the new diagnoses are involved in growth plate biology, physical examinati

Idiopathic short stature (ISS) is the most common paediatric endocrine disease. However, the underlying pathology of ISS remains unclear. Currently, there are no effective diagnostic markers or therapeutic strategies available for ISS. In this study, we aimed to identify differential plasma protein expression and novel biomarkers in patients with ISS, and elucidate the biological functions of candidate proteins in ISS pathogenesis. Four specimen pairs from four ISS children and age-/sex-matched control individuals were subjected to proteomics analysis, and 340 samples of children with a mean a
