This report describes modifications in the techniques used for both the induction and elicitation of photoallergic contact dermatitis (PACD) in the guinea pig. These changes have improved the reliability of this animal as the model of choice for screening chemicals or products for their tendency to produce PACD. Motor activity of guinea-pig ileum in vitro was monitored by recording isometric tension. Superfusion of the serosal surface with vinblastine (22 microM) increased the motility of ileum but failed to do so in the presence of local anaesthetics and also in preparations depolarised with K+-Tyrode. Nine guinea pigs were exposed to a 4 kHz narrow band noise at 120 dB for 30 minutes. The animals were killed immediately following exposure and the cochlear tissues prepared using a soft-surface preparation technique. Influenza, mumps and measles viruses were examined for their ability to induce in guinea pigs homologous and cross-reactive delayed hypersensitivity. A majority of the animals skin tested with homologous and a portion of the animals skin tested with heterologous viruses and vaccines developed positive reactions. Low molecular weight oligomers of an epoxy resin of bisphenol A diglycidyl ether type were isolated by gel permeation chromatography. The sensitizing capacity of these oligomers was assessed with the "guinea pig maximization test". The oligomer with the molecular weight of 340 sensitized 80% to 100% of the animals, but produced no cross reactions to the other oligomers. The sensitization capacity of six epoxy reactive diluents was investigated with the "guinea pig maximization test". All the low molecular weight reactive diluents (MW 175 to 360) proved to be sensitizers. One diluent of higher molecular weight (MW 1700) produced no reaction.

The effect of occlusion and griseofulvin on the duration and severity of acute dermatophytosis was assessed in guinea pigs. Sixty guinea pigs given standard Trichophyton mentagrophytes infections were divided into 5 groups: (A) control, (B) intermittent wet occlusion, (C) continuous-wet occlusion, (D) griseofulvin, (E) griseofulvin-continuous-wet occlusion. The authors report a toxicological study of bis (tributyltin oxide) (TBTO) given by inhalation (oily aerosol) to 105 Hartley albino guinea pigs. Doses vary from 1 mg to 0.1 mg of TBTO per liter of aerosol. Death occurs for doses of 0.2 mg per le more resistant than the male ones. The intoxication is marked by a period of ocular and nasal irritation followed by a short remission time, then death occurs after asphyxic convulsions. The localization of amylase activity in the major salivary glands of adult male and female guinea pigs was determined by a substrate film technique. Parotid and submandibular glands showed intense activity localized to the acini. Only a weak reaction in the lumen of intralobular ducts was observed in sublingual glands. The sex differences in amylase activity reported in other commonly studied laboratory rodents were not detected in this species.

Two cases of retroplacental guinea worms causing bleeding in the early and late months of pregnancy are reported. In one case, habitual abortions may have been due to the presence of a guinea worm. These situations and manifestations have not been previously reported. It is suggested that larval worms can invade the vagina, that the acid vaginal exudate destroys the Cyclops and releases the larvae which then penetrate the tissues and migrate to the retroplacental region corresponding to the migration from the stomach.
