BACKGROUND: Hair-shaft examination is diagnostically useful in a range of adult and paediatric conditions.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the usefulness of dermatoscopy in hair-shaft microscopy.
METHODS: Typical examples of selected conditions from an extensive collection of scalp hair were examined using a dermatoscope and a light microscope with paired cross-polarizing filters. Hair-shaft characteristics were photographed using a digital camera.

Alopecia, hypertrichosis, and hirsutism may be caused by a variety of medications. Drug-induced alterations in the texture or structure of the hair shaft, however, are much less common. The human keratin family comprises 54 members, 28 type I and 26 type II. Out of the 28 type I keratins, 17 are epithelial and 11 are hair keratins. Androgen hormones play an important role in common skin and hair conditions including acne vulgaris, hirsutism, and androgenetic alopecia. We examined hair from 15 patients with trichothiodystrophy (TTD), a rare inherited disorder with brittle, cystine-deficient hair. We report a 52 year-old man presenting with an acute considerable hair loss induced by carbamazepine (CBZ). The remarkable scalp hair loss started within a week after CBZ administration. There was no evidence of dermatitis or allergic reaction, or other cause for the hair loss. The serum concentration of CBZ was 8.6 microg/ml (therapeutic range 8-12 microg/ml). CBZ was discontinued, and the hair loss stopped within several days with new hair growth. OBJECTIVE: Our purpose was to evaluate the effectiveness of single hair grafting in patients with vitiligo.
METHODS: Single hairs were grafted into vitiliginous areas of 21 patients. The diameter of the spreading pigmentation was evaluated periodically.
