Program Evaluation of the WASHmobile PICHA7 Mobile Health and Chlorine E-Voucher Program in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Targeted water treatment and hygiene (WASH) programs for those residing near diarrhoea patients can be a cost-effective approach during outbreaks to reduce diarrhoea spread by targeting those at highest risk. We designed the WASHmobile mobile health (mHealth) program for high risk populations for diarrhoea. In our previous randomised controlled trials in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) (PICHA7) and Bangladesh (CHoBI7), WASHmobile delivery to diarrhoea patient households through a healthcare facility visit and mobile messages from a doctor significantly reduced diarrhoea, cholera, an

Effectiveness of a continuous handwashing education program with multiple activities at a Japanese kindergarten school.

Formation of proper handwashing techniques and habits from childhood is important for disease prevention. However, there are few studies that comprehensively and longitudinally evaluate the effectiveness of handwashing education for kindergarteners. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of continuous handwashing education using multiple activities to improve handwashing practices and skills among first- to third-grade students at a kindergarten in central Japan. A quasi-experimental one group pre- and post-test design was used. The education program consisted of three activities: (i) a

Adoption of Preventive Measures During the Very Early Phase of the COVID-19 Outbreak in China: National Cross-sectional Survey Study.

BACKGROUND: The outbreak of COVID-19 in China occurred around the Chinese New Year (January 25, 2020), and infections decreased continuously afterward. General adoption of preventive measures during the Chinese New Year period was crucial in driving the decline. It is imperative to investigate preventive behaviors among Chinese university students, who could have spread COVID-19 when travelling home during the Chinese New Year break. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we investigated levels of COVID-19-related personal measures undertaken during the 7-day Chinese New Year holidays by university studen

Access to Safe Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene: A Cross-Sectional Study among the Maasai in Tanzania.

Safe water supply, sanitation, and hygiene (WaSH) are among key components to prevent and control waterborne diseases such as cholera, schistosomiasis, and other gastrointestinal morbidities in the community. In 2018, there was cholera outbreak in Ngorongoro district that was fueled by inadequate and unsafe water as well as poor sanitation and hygiene. We used an analytical cross-sectional study first to determine the proportion of households with access to WaSH and second to assess factors associated with coverage of household's access to WaSH. Methods included interviewing heads of the house

Characteristics Associated with Adults Remembering to Wash Hands in Multiple Situations Before and During the COVID-19 Pandemic - United States, October 2019 and June 2020.

Washing hands often, especially during times when one is likely to acquire and spread pathogens,* is one important measure to help prevent the spread of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), as well as other pathogens spread by respiratory or fecal-oral transmission (1,2). Studies have reported moderate to high levels of self-reported handwashing among adults worldwide during the COVID-19 pandemic (3-5)†; however, little is known about how handwashing behavior among U.S. adults has changed since the start of the pandemic. For this study, survey data from Octobe

Effects of single and integrated water, sanitation, handwashing, and nutrition interventions on child soil-transmitted helminth and Giardia infections: A cluster-randomized controlled trial in rural Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Helminth and protozoan infections affect more than 1 billion children globally. Improving water quality, sanitation, handwashing, and nutrition could be more sustainable control strategies for parasite infections than mass drug administration, while providing other quality of life benefits. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We enrolled geographic clusters of pregnant women in rural western Kenya into a cluster-randomized controlled trial (ClinicalTrials.gov NCT01704105) that tested 6 interventions: water treatment, improved sanitation, handwashing with soap, combined water treatment, sanitati

Parasitological and nutritional status of school-age and preschool-age children in four villages in Southern Leyte, Philippines: Lessons for monitoring the outcome of Community-Led Total Sanitation.

While preventive chemotherapy remains to be a major strategy for the prevention and control of soil-transmitted helminthiases (STH), improvements in water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) comprise the long-term strategy to achieve sustained control of STH. This study examined the parasitological and nutritional status of school-age and preschool-age children in four villages in Southern Leyte, Philippines where two of the villages attained Open-Defecation-Free (ODF) status after introduction of Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS). A total of 341 children (89.0% of the total eligible populatio

Do atopics tolerate alcohol-based hand rubs? A prospective, controlled, randomized double-blind clinical trial.

Alcohol-based hand rubs are used frequently in healthcare settings, but their tolerance among atopic subjects is unknown. The dermal tolerance to five alcohol-based hand rubs was assessed among atopic and non-atopic subjects in a repetitive occlusive patch test. In total, 54 subjects were analysed. One half of the subjects were atopic (modified Erlanger atopy score > or = 8), the other half were non-atopic. Treatments were controlled with water and 2% sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS). Treatment sites were assessed by visual inspection (tolerability score 0-4). Skin redness was determined with a c

Relationship of breast-feeding and hand-washing with dehydration in infants with diarrhoea due to Escherichia coli.

This prospective cohort study was carried out in the neonatal unit of the Yangon Children Hospital, Myanmar, to gather more information on the types of feedings and hand-washing practices of mothers as the determinant of severe dehydration in infants with acute diarrhoea due to Escherichia coli. The study subjects included 100 infants with diarrhoea, aged less than 4 months, admitted to the hospital from June 1997 to May 1998. Data on isolation of E. coli from rectal swab samples, types of feedings, hand-washing practices, and dehydration status were collected. Of the 100 cases, E. coli was is

Study of the effects of education on the management of urine drainage systems by patients and carers.

A randomized controlled trial was undertaken to test the effects of an education programme, which included an information booklet and demonstration, on the management of urine drainage systems by patients and carers. A total of 45 patients, new and established users, were included. Data were collected at pretest, test and follow-up visits. The education programme was found to improve significantly the performance of handwashing after bag emptying and before and after bag changing, although this effect did not persist over time. The findings are discussed with a number of conclusions drawn and

The History and Impact of Prescribing Orthokeratology for Slowing Myopia Progression.

This paper discusses the history and impact of orthokeratology on slowing the progression of myopia. It discusses the origins and evolution of orthokeratology from polymethymethaccrylate lenses worn during the day to its current prescribing of highly permeable, innovative reverse-geometry designs worn only while sleeping. Technological advances in corneal topography, lens design, lens materials, and manufacturing have facilitated growth of orthokeratology to a precise and predictable procedure. More recently, significant interest in orthokeratology has been stimulated by its efficacy in slowin

Natural products eugenol and cinnamaldehyde as potential therapeutic alternatives against Candida auris infections.

AIMS: Candida auris has been reported on all continents, becoming a global threat due to high levels of resistance to all antifungal classes. In addition, this pathogen has lower susceptibility to disinfectants used in hospitals, favoring its stay in such environments. Evaluate the action of eugenol and cinnamaldehyde against Candida auris. METHODS AND RESULTS: The products were evaluated through sensitivity tests of broth microdilution, as well as their possible mechanisms of action using proteomic analysis. For microdilution was used 24 strains and for synergistic interactions was used 2 st

The role of water in healthcare-associated infections.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The aim is to discuss the epidemiology of infections that arise from contaminated water in healthcare settings, including Legionnaires' disease, other Gram-negative pathogens, nontuberculous mycobacteria, and fungi. RECENT FINDINGS: Legionella can colonize a hospital water system and infect patients despite use of preventive disinfectants. Evidence-based measures are available for secondary prevention. Vulnerable patients can develop healthcare-associated infections with waterborne organisms that are transmitted by colonization of plumbing systems, including sinks and their

Hand hygiene in the intensive care unit.

Healthcare-associated infections affect 1.4 million patients at any time worldwide, as estimated by the World Health Organization. In intensive care units, the burden of healthcare-associated infections is greatly increased, causing additional morbidity and mortality. Multidrug-resistant pathogens are commonly involved in such infections and render effective treatment challenging. Proper hand hygiene is the single most important, simplest, and least expensive means of preventing healthcare-associated infections. In addition, it is equally important to stop transmission of multidrug-resistant p

Environmental Clonal Spread of Azole-Resistant Candida parapsilosis with Erg11-Y132F Mutation Causing a Large Candidemia Outbreak in a Brazilian Cancer Referral Center.

Clonal outbreaks due to azole-resistant Candida parapsilosis (ARCP) isolates have been reported in numerous studies, but the environmental niche of such isolates has yet to be defined. Herein, we aimed to identify the environmental niche of ARCP isolates causing unremitting clonal outbreaks in an adult ICU from a Brazilian cancer referral center. C. parapsilosis sensu stricto isolates recovered from blood cultures, pericatheter skins, healthcare workers (HCW), and nosocomial surfaces were genotyped by multilocus microsatellite typing (MLMT). Antifungal susceptibility testing was performed by t

Community challenges when using large plastic bottles for Solar Energy Disinfection of Water (SODIS).

BACKGROUND: Communities living in developing countries as well as populations affected by natural or man-made disasters can be left at great risk from water related diseases, especially those spread through the faecal-oral route. Conventional water treatments such as boiling and chlorination can be effective but may prove costly for impoverished communities. Solar water disinfection (SODIS) has been shown to be a cheap and effective way for communities to treat their water. The exposure to sunlight is typically carried out in small volume plastic beverage bottles (up to 2 l). Given the water r
