Decreasing incidence of occupational contact urticaria caused by natural rubber latex allergy in German health care workers.

BACKGROUND: The development of allergy to natural rubber latex (NRL) is a risk for health care workers. A regulation banning powdered NRL gloves was implemented in Germany in 1998. OBJECTIVE: This study assesses the effects of this regulation on the development of occupational skin disease caused by NRL in health care personnel working in facilities insured by the German statutory accident insurance company, covering some 1.8 million insured health care workers. METHODS: We reviewed the annual numbers of reported suspected cases of NRL-induced occupational allergies (mainly contact urticaria

Toxicity and occupational health hazards of coal fly ash (CFA). A review of data and comparison to coal mine dust.

Coal fly ashes (CFA) are complex particles of a variable composition, which is mainly dependent on the combustion process, the source of coal and the precipitation technique. Toxic constituents in these particles are considered to be metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and silica. The purpose of this review was to study the in vitro and in vivo data on coal fly ash and relate the studied endpoints to the role of (crystalline) silica, considering its recent classification as a human carcinogen. For most of the effects coal mine dust was chosen as a reference, since it contains up to 10% of

Occupational exposure of health care workers (HCWs) to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV): stress reactions and counseling interventions.

As more people become infected with HIV, Health Care Workers (HCWs) have a greater likelihood of being exposed at work. HIV exposure threatens the life of the HCW and can elicit a stress reaction. Although HCWs have reactions similar to those of people who have been exposed to other traumatic events, the nature of this stressor and the length of time it lasts is unique. This article presents counseling interventions that address the needs of the individual HCW during this event. These counseling guidelines promote the HCW's discussion of the event and any relevant past unresolved traumatic exp

Q fever: an issue in occupational health & safety? An overview of the methods of control and the effects of Coxiella burnetii on the human host.

Q Fever has proved to be a virulent infectious disease for a great many years. A number of epidemics have occurred among laboratory workers engaged in research on C burnetii but few fatalities have been recorded and the course of the disease is generally uncomplicated and benign (Braunwald et al, 1987). By following the recommendations of a large number of scientists, implementing and maintaining basic control measures, the risk of contamination will be kept at a minimum.

Strategic Prevention of Occupational and Toxicological Risks in Moroccan Traditional Tanneries: From Risk Assessment to Operational Health and Safety Planning.

The artisanal sector is a part of Morocco's second-largest employment and represents a major socioeconomic activity. However, it remains a major source of occupational exposure and environmental contamination, where preventive systems and regulatory enforcement are often insufficient. This study represents the fourth phase of a comprehensive research program on artisanal tanneries in Fez, based on the identification of hazards, the assessment of health effects, and the elaboration of initial preventive recommendations. Using reference data collected between 2017 and 2019, we assessed the curre

A new tool to support the protection of workers' health: development and application of an innovative analytical method for biomonitoring occupational exposure to formaldehyde.

Formaldehyde (FA) is a widely used industrial chemical and a ubiquitous environmental contaminant, for which biological monitoring remains challenging due to its high reactivity and substantial endogenous background. In the present study, a sensitive and selective analytical method based on headspace solid-phase microextraction with on-fiber derivatization (HS-SPME) coupled to gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) was developed and applied for the determination of urinary FA. Direct on-fiber derivatization using O-(2,3,4,5,6-pentafluorobenzyl) hydroxylamine (PFBHA) was optimiz
