Locked down, locked out: a cross-sectional study on experiences of intimate partner violence (IPV) and barriers to formal and informal support during COVID-19 lockdowns in Ontario.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic intensified pre-existing social and health inequities, with individuals actively experiencing intimate partner violence (IPV) facing heightened risks and barriers to support. While lockdowns were necessary for public health, they also increased isolation and limited access to essential formal and informal supports. This study explores the association between IPV experienced during Ontario’s COVID-19 lockdowns (March 2020–June 2021) and barriers to both formal (e.g., health, legal, housing) and informal (e.g., friends, family) support systems. METHODS: A cross-

The role of the Stop Transmission of Polio (STOP) program in developing countries: the experience of Kenya.

BACKGROUND: In 1988, the 41st World Health Assembly (WHA) marked the launch of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) for the eradication of polio. A key component of the GPEI has been the development and deployment of a skilled workforce to implement eradication activities. In 1989, the Stop Transmission of Polio (STOP) was initiated to address skilled human resource gaps and strengthen poliovirus surveillance. This paper describes the role of the STOP 52 team in technical capacity building and health system strengthening in the implementation of polio eradication strategies in Kenya

The experiences of female community health workers during COVID-19 and the influence of gender norms and values in Nepal: A qualitative study.

Female Community Health Volunteers (FCHVs) are close-to-community providers who voluntarily serve their communities in Nepal. Gaps exist in evidence regarding the challenges posed by shocks such as the pandemic, as well as the gendered experiences of FCHVs in the general context. This study aimed to explore the experiences and challenges faced by FCHVs during COVID-19 and the influence of gender norms and values. We conducted a qualitative study in two municipalities, Gulariya in Lumbini province and Chandragiri in Bagmati province, Nepal. A total of 22 interviews were conducted between Decemb

COVID-19 pandemic experiences of parents caring for children with oesophageal atresia/tracheo-oesophageal fistula.

PURPOSE: The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in a global health crisis of unparalleled magnitude. The direct risk to the health of children is low. However, disease-containment measures have society-wide impacts. This study explored the pandemic experiences of parents of children with oesophageal atresia/tracheo-oesophageal fistula (OA/TOF) in the UK. DESIGN: A phenomenological approach underpinned use of an asynchronous online forum method, in collaboration with a patient support group. Data were evaluated using thematic analysis. RESULTS: The online forum ran between 7 November and 18 Decem

Relationship between triterpenoid anticancer drug resistance, autophagy, and caspase-1 in adult T-cell leukemia.

INTRODUCTION: The World Health Organisation identifies strengthening leadership and management as an essential component in scaling up health services to reach the UN's Millennium Development Goals. There is an identified need for informal, practically based management training programs, such as action learning, which allow trainees to reflect on their own work environment. Action learning, in essence, is learning by sharing real problems with others, as opposed to theoretical classroom learning. METHODS: The objective of this study was to pilot an action learning group program with managers

Community-Based Participatory Research to Promote Social Inclusion in a Rural Town in Japan: Process Evaluation of a Pre-COVID-19 Collaboration Among Residents and Professionals.

BACKGROUND: Rural communities face aging, depopulation, shrinking resources, and increasing social isolation. This study examined how a Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) partnership was formed and negotiated in rural Japan, focusing on collaborative decision-making and arts-based engagement as a foundation for social inclusion. METHODS: A qualitative descriptive study was conducted in Nagi Town, Okayama Prefecture, Japan. Between February 2018 and January 2020, eight CBPR meetings were held with 13 participants, including family physicians, public health nurses, community-based pa

Effectiveness of Smartphone-Based Dyadic Interventions to Increase Physical Activity in Romantic Couples: Microrandomized Trial.

BACKGROUND: Social exchange processes, such as social support and social control, can promote health behavior change. However, these processes are often neglected when studying health behavior change and designing interventions. Intervening on these social exchange processes using dyadic interventions may provide a promising approach to promote health behaviors. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the effects of dyadic interventions to increase moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) in romantic couples. Furthermore, we explored how the target, type, and timing of the interventio

Sports-Related Concussion Among Physically Active Adolescents in the Southeastern United States: Effects on Mental Health During the Pandemic.

Sports-related concussions (SRC) pose risks to young people's physical and mental health. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we studied linkages between youths' SRC experiences and internalizing problems (depression, self-harm, and suicidality) among a representative sample in Southeastern state (n = 4,668 total, n = 547 reported SRC experience). Logistic regressions indicated significant associations between youths' SRC experiences and depression (AOR = 1.32, p < .05), suicidality (e.g., attempted suicide AOR = 2.68, p < .001), and self-harm (AOR = 1.97, p < .001) while controlling for being bulli

An application of a modified theory of planned behavior model to investigate adolescents' job safety knowledge, norms, attitude and intention to enact workplace safety and health skills.

INTRODUCTION: For many reasons, including a lack of adequate safety training and education, U.S. adolescents experience a higher rate of job-related injury compared to adult workers. Widely used social-psychological theories in public health research and practice, such as the theory of planned behavior, may provide guidance for developing and evaluating school-based interventions to prepare adolescents for workplace hazards and risks. METHOD: Using a structural equation modeling approach, the current study explores whether a modified theory of planned behavior model provides insight on 1,748

Malnutrition-related conditions and interventions in US state/territorial Older Americans Act aging plans.

BACKGROUND: Factors that decrease independence and increase morbidity must be reduced to improve the nutrition, health, and other challenges confronting older adults. In the United States (US), the Older Americans Act (OAA) requires each state/territory develop multi-year aging plans for spending federal funds that foster healthy aging (including support of congregate/home delivered meals programs) and separately requires grant applications for nutrition service programs supporting older Native Americans. Malnutrition (particularly protein-energy undernutrition), sarcopenia, frailty, and obesi

No Sensorization without Representation: Co-designing Tailored Sensorization Plans with Nursing Home Leadership, Direct Care Staff, Residents, and Resident Family Members.

OBJECTIVE: : Although interest in using sensors in long-term care (LTC) settings is growing, little guidance exists on how to engage stakeholders in planning. This study aimed to (1) develop a systematic, community-engaged process for co-designing sensorization plans - defining goals and parameters (e.g., data collection, sharing) to support decision making prior to sensor deployment, (2) apply this process with LTC stakeholders, and (3) examine stakeholder perspectives across sensor approaches. METHODS: : We conducted a multi-phase, multi-method study in a single nursing home that included o

Evaluation of a community approach to address substance abuse in Appalachia.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate a conference based program designed to enable 26 Appalachian teams to create intervention plans to address substance abuse in their communities. In March 2006, 26 Appalachian teams attended a conference to address substance abuse in their region. Teams of four to seven stakeholders generated community plans. The teams were evaluated 8 months later using a framework based on an adaptation of the Health Belief Model. Team leaders participated in structured telephone interviews. Results of this study found that the most common benefit to promulgating plan

Postpartum depression among mothers attending postnatal clinics in Bole sub-city, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in the post-COVID-19 era: A cross-sectional study.

Postpartum depression (PPD) harms maternal and child health. Evidence showed elevated PPD during the COVID-19 pandemic, but post-pandemic data from low-resource urban settings are limited. We measured PPD prevalence and its correlates among mothers attending postnatal clinics in Bole sub-city, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, during the post-COVID-19 period (data collection: 1 March-30 April 2024). An institution-based cross-sectional study enrolled 410 mothers who delivered 2 weeks-1 year prior, attending five primary health centres. Participants were selected using systematic random sampling, with pro

Experiences, needs and priorities of family caregivers of people with severe mental health conditions in low- and middle-income countries: A systematic review of qualitative studies.

Family caregivers in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) provide the lion's share of care for their relatives with severe mental health conditions amid vast treatment gaps. Yet, their lived experiences are not adequately explored. This systematic review synthesizes evidence on the lived experiences, priorities and needs of these caregivers across diverse LMIC settings. We analyzed 76 articles identified across nine databases. Data were synthesized using thematic analysis. The synthesis identified five themes: (1) the journey to understanding, (2) familial commitment to care, (3) the unrel

Mapping of the US Domestic Influenza Virologic Surveillance Landscape.

Influenza virologic surveillance is critical each season for tracking influenza circulation, following trends in antiviral drug resistance, detecting novel influenza infections in humans, and selecting viruses for use in annual seasonal vaccine production. We developed a framework and process map for characterizing the landscape of US influenza virologic surveillance into 5 tiers of influenza testing: outpatient settings (tier 1), inpatient settings and commercial laboratories (tier 2), state public health laboratories (tier 3), National Influenza Reference Center laboratories (tier 4), and Ce

'I put it on the back burner most days': Living with chronic risk.

Continued advances in genetics and genomics research suggest that more and more people will be identified 'at risk' for common diseases such as cancer, heart disease or diabetes. A perspective for understanding how people adapt to and manage inherited risk, as well as identifying differences in individual response to DNA information would be useful in the planning and provision of genetics health services. This article adopts a 'chronic risk' perspective to explore living at risk of Huntington disease (HD), a fatal genetic disorder. Qualitative data analysis suggested two broad themes that ill

Provider perceptions of patient psychosocial needs after orofacial injury.

PURPOSE: Vulnerable populations are at particular risk for developing psychosocial sequelae after they experience orofacial injury. To enhance understanding of awareness, perspectives, and beliefs regarding attendant psychosocial issues, surgeons who provide orofacial injury care to indigent patients were surveyed. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We surveyed 26 oral and maxillofacial surgeons and 15 otolaryngology surgeons at a large, urban, Level 1 trauma center. The survey, which measured providers' perceptions of pertinent contextual elements and patients' psychosocial needs after assaultive orofac

A qualitative study of the adoption of buprenorphine for opioid addiction treatment.

Qualified physicians may prescribe buprenorphine to treat opioid dependence, but medication use remains controversial. We examined adoption of buprenorphine in two not-for-profit integrated health plans, over time, completing 101 semi-structured interviews with clinicians and clinician-administrators from primary and specialty care. Transcripts were reviewed, coded, and analyzed. A strong leader championing the new treatment was critical for adoption in both health plans. Once clinicians began using buprenorphine, patients' and other clinicians' experiences affected decisions more than did the

Factors associated with the time to transition from suicidal ideation to suicide plans and attempts in the Australian general population.

BACKGROUND: Suicide plans and attempts rarely occur without prior suicidal ideation but are hard to predict. Early intervention efforts need to focus on subgroups of the population who are more likely to transition from ideation to suicidal plans and attempts. The current study utilised data from a large nationally representative sample to investigate the time taken to transition and the demographic and mental health correlates of transitioning to suicidal plans and attempts among those with suicidal ideation. METHODS: Data were from 1237 Australians aged 16-85 years who reported suicidal tho
