On the Difficulty of Defining Duration of Deafness for Adults With Cochlear Implants.

The amount of time that a person with a cochlear implant experiences severe-to-profound hearing loss before implantation is thought to impact the underlying neural survival, health, and function of the auditory system, thus likely being closely related to post-implantation performance in auditory tasks. The reporting of this number in the research literature is ubiquitous. Although it is most commonly called "duration of deafness," our point of view is that the term is imprecise and the calculation of this number can be nontrivial, particularly for cases of adult onset of hearing loss. We prov

A case of improved hearing with cochlear implantation in Gaucher disease type 1.

Gaucher disease is a lysosomal storage disorder that is caused by congenital defective function of the enzyme glucocerebrosidase. Glucocerebroside that is not hydrolyzed by glucocerebrosidase mainly accumulates in the reticular tissue. We describe a Japanese boy with Gaucher disease type 1 who developed bilateral profound sensorineural hearing loss within approximately 4years. We performed cochlear implantation initially on his right ear and again on his left ear 5 months later. The cochlear implants were successfully utilized with a speech discrimination score of 95% on a Japanese sentence re

Clinical analysis of hearing levels in vitiligo patients.

Vitiligo is a common, often inherited disorder resulting from a loss of functional melanocytes. The mechanism by which skin melanocytes disappear can also affect other melanocytic organs. Although melanocyte-associated diseases have racial differences, there have been no studies of hearing loss associated with vitiligo in Asian populations, and no analysis of any relationship between hearing loss and severity of vitiligo. So we tried to assess the hearing differences between Korean vitiligo patients and normal subjects. Pure tone audiometry, auditory brainstem response, and electrocochleograph

Effects of a single intratympanic gentamicin injection on Meniere's disease.

CONCLUSION: Both single and multiple injections of ITGM were effective in vertigo control and functional improvement. However, the risk of sensorineural hearing loss was much lower for a single injection than for multiple injections. OBJECTIVES: While intratympanic gentamicin injection (ITGM) has been established as treatment option for intractable Meniere's disease, several injection protocols have been introduced. The risk of sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) has been reported to be variable for each protocol. Among the protocols, the single injection protocol is an easy to administer, well

Diagnostics of the cochlear amplifier by means of distortion product otoacoustic emissions.

Distortion product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE) growth functions reflect the active nonlinear cochlear sound processing when using a primary-tone setting which accounts for the different compressions of the two primaries at the DPOAE generation site and hence provide a measure for objectively assessing cochlear sensitivity and compression. DPOAE thresholds can be derived from extrapolated DPOAE input/output (I/O) functions independently of the noise floor and consequently can serve as a unique measure for reading DPOAE measurements. The thus-estimated DPOAE thresholds exhibit a close correspon

Interaural correlation of acoustic hearing preservation following sequential cochlear implantation.

INTRODUCTION: Compared to unilateral cochlear implantation, bilateral cochlear implantation demonstrates multiple advantages in speech understanding in noise and sound localization, especially when acoustic hearing is preserved in both ears. However, outcomes and factors influencing acoustic hearing preservation following cochlear implant (CI) remains poorly understood. Patients receiving sequential cochlear implantation are a valuable population to investigate as studying bilateral ears allows for a high degree of control of individual factors that may be affecting trends in hearing. Hearing and middle ear function in rheumatoid arthritis.

The hearing and middle ear function in 68 patients with rheumatoid arthritis were tested. Reduced middle ear compliance, presumably due to stiffening of the tympanossicular chain, was noted in 48 patients (70.50%). Conductive hearing loss and absence of the stapedius reflex, were recorded in only one patient (1.40%). In 20 patients (29.40%) a moderate (20-30 dB) high frequency sensorineural hearing loss was found. The results of loudness balance and tone decay tests and the speech discrimination scores suggested cochlear pathology in some cases. However the multiplicity of factors that might b

Hearing loss in patients with osteogenesis imperfecta. A clinical and audiological study of 201 patients.

Clinical otological features, hearing status and middle ear function in 201 patients with osteogenesis imperfecta are presented. The study covered 76% of the expected total number of patients with osteogenesis imperfecta in Denmark. 78% of the patients exhibited an autosomal dominant inheritance pattern with an almost 100% penetrance. In 39% of the ears examined, a conductive or mixed hearing loss was found. Sensorineural hearing loss or anacusis was seen in 11% of the ears. In most cases the onset of hearing impairment was noted in the second or third decade and progressing with increasing ag

Vestibular Function in Children With a Congenital Cytomegalovirus Infection: 3 Years of Follow-Up.

OBJECTIVES: Congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV) infection is the most common nongenetic cause of sensorineural hearing loss in children. Due to the close anatomical relationship between the auditory and the vestibular sensory organs, cCMV can also be an important cause of vestibular loss. However, the prevalence and nature of cCMV-induced vestibular impairment is still underexplored. The aim of this study was to investigate the occurrence and characteristics of vestibular loss in a large group of cCMV-infected children, representative of the overall cCMV-population. DESIGN: Ninety-three childre

Prefrontal-Temporal Pathway Mediates the Cross-Modal and Cognitive Reorganization in Sensorineural Hearing Loss With or Without Tinnitus: A Multimodal MRI Study.

Objective: Hearing loss, one main risk factor of tinnitus and hyperacusis, is believed to involve significant central functional abnormalities. The recruitment of the auditory cortex in non-auditory sensory and higher-order cognitive processing has been demonstrated in the hearing-deprived brain. The dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC), which has dense anatomical connections with the auditory pathway, is known to play a crucial role in multi-sensory integration, auditory regulation, and cognitive processing. This study aimed to verify the role of the dlPFC in the cross-modal reorganization

A case of Meniere's disease with vertical nystagmus after administration of glycerol.

A 62-year-old woman who complained of repetitive vertigo with a left fluctuating hearing loss was admitted to our hospital three times. A glycerol test was done on the third admission. Two hours after the administration of glycerol, the patient complained of rotatory vertigo with a downbeat vertical nystagmus. This nystagmus then changed its direction upward. Her left hearing loss was improved during the glycerol test. On the day after the glycerol test, a caloric test was done. The caloric response of the right ear was remarkably improved. Although she had not felt a hearing loss in the right

Auditory neuropathy/dys-synchrony and its perceptual consequences.

Auditory neuropathy/dys-synchrony is a form of hearing impairment in which cochlear outer hair cell function is spared but neural transmission in the auditory pathway is disordered. This condition, or group of conditions with a common physiologic profile, accounts for approximately 7% of permanent childhood hearing loss and a significant (but as yet undetermined) proportion of adult impairment. This paper presents an overview of the mechanisms underlying auditory neuropathy/dys-synchrony-type hearing loss and the clinical profile for affected patients. In particular it examines the perceptual

Residual Hair Cell Responses in Electric-Acoustic Stimulation Cochlear Implant Users with Complete Loss of Acoustic Hearing After Implantation.

Changes in cochlear implant (CI) design and surgical techniques have enabled the preservation of residual acoustic hearing in the implanted ear. While most Nucleus Hybrid L24 CI users retain significant acoustic hearing years after surgery, 6-17 % experience a complete loss of acoustic hearing (Roland et al. Laryngoscope. 126(1):175-81. (2016), Laryngoscope. 128(8):1939-1945 (2018); Scheperle et al. Hear Res. 350:45-57 (2017)). Electrocochleography (ECoG) enables non-invasive monitoring of peripheral auditory function and may provide insight into the pathophysiology of hearing loss. The ECoG r

Onset of ototoxicity in the cat is related to onset of auditory function.

Cats are altricial mammals; they are born deaf and undergo rapid maturation of the auditory periphery late in the first and throughout the 2nd week of life. Previous studies, using multiple aminoglycoside administration over several days or weeks, have indicated that there is a reduction in the degree of ototoxicity in young animals provided the drug is administered prior to the onset of auditory function. In order to provide a more precise relationship between the degree of ototoxicity and auditory development, we used a single administration of Kanamycin (KA) and the loop diuretic ethacrynic

Interactions between the hippocampus and the auditory pathway.

Increasing evidence has shown that noise overexposure could lead to impaired hippocampal function. Hippocampal alteration is also observed in several auditory deficits, including hearing loss, and tinnitus. Therefore, the functions of hearing and cognition interact with each other. Here, we summarize the evidence that noise affects the hippocampus from aspects of behavior, neurogenesis, ultrastructure, neurotransmission, other biomarkers, and electrophysiology. We also address hippocampal alterations in auditory disorders, including hearing loss and tinnitus. Based on the current state of the

Mice heterozygous for the Serpinb6a null mutation show deficits in central auditory function after acoustic trauma.

OBJECTIVES: Complete deficiency of the serine protease inhibitor gene, SERPINB6, is responsible for autosomal-recessive, nonsyndromic sensorineural hearing loss in humans. A mouse model of this deafness gene identifies Serpinb6a expression in the neurosensory epithelium and fibrocytes of the cochlea. Homozygous Serpinb6a mutant mice display an exaggerated hearing loss after exposure to moderate acoustic trauma. It is unknown if and how heterozygous Serpinb6a mice show increased vulnerability to acoustic trauma. METHODS: We exposed Serpinb6a+/- and Serpinb6a+/+ mice to acoustic trauma and meas
