Oral rinses in growth inhibition and treatment of Helicobacter pylori infection.

BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is well-known for its role in chronic gastritis and gastric cancer. Eradication of these carcinogenic bacteria from the gut is one of the challenges for clinicians. The complexity of treatment mainly owes to antibiotic resistance and relapse due to an additional reservoir in the oral cavity. Our study emphases the isolation of H. pylori from distinct habitats of the gut microenvironment (gastric biopsy and gastric juice) and its subsequent characterization. We have also evaluated the effect of various oral rinses on isolated H. pylori from different

Epidemiological investigation of Helicobacter pylori infection in elderly people in Beijing.

BACKGROUND: The Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection rate in China is approximately 50%. H. pylori is a pathogenic factor of peptic ulcer and chronic gastritis. In addition, H. pylori infection may also be associated with a variety of cardiovascular diseases in elderly people, such as arteriosclerosis, coronary heart disease, and cerebral infarction, having deleterious effect on their health. With the aging of the population, the disease characteristics of the elderly population have been increasingly valued by the whole society. We conducted an epidemiological survey of H. pylori infecti

Helicobacter pylori Infection and the Patterns of Gastric Mucin Expression in Children.

BACKGROUND: The updated model for the mechanism of gastric carcinogenesis demonstrates that Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a risk factor in every step of the process. The expression of certain gastric mucins is altered by H. pylori infection in adult patients. The aim of our research was to assess the impact of H. pylori infection on the expression of secretory mucins in the pediatric antral mucosa. METHODS: Slides were stained with monoclonal antibodies for MUC5AC, MUC6 and MUC2, digitalized and scored using both a semiquantitative and a quantitative approach. RESULTS: The expression of

[Helicobacter pylori infection in the HIV + population: a comorbidity to think about].

OBJECTIVE: Gastrointestinal disorders are frequent in HIV+. Helicobacter pylori may be an underdiagnosed cause. METHODS: Patients with HIV and H. pylori were described since January 1998 up to December 2017. RESULTS: A total de 132 patients were included. The most frequent symptom was dyspepsia. 88.5% had chronic atrophic gastritis. Eradication was achieved in 102 (77.3%). Healing was more frequent with quadruple regimen (p=0.004) and in the youngest (p=0.041). CONCLUSIONS: H. pylori infection could be responsible for nonspecific digestive manifestations in HIV + patients.

Association between Helicobacter pylori infection, eradication and diabetes mellitus.

AIMS/INTRODUCTION: It is suspected that Helicobacter pylori is associated with extradigestive diseases including diabetes. So far, a number of studies have examined the association between H. pylori and diabetes, and the results were conflicting. The aim of the present study was to examine the association between H. pylori infection, eradication and diabetes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The present cross-sectional study was carried out using data from annual health checkups carried out at the Toranomon Hospital Health Management Center. The status of H. pylori infection, determined by serum antibo

Treating Helicobacter pylori infection in the face of growing antibiotic resistance.

Helicobacter pylori eradication cures most peptic ulcers and non-atrophic chronic gastritis, and may potentially prevent over 70% of gastric cancers. In the late 1980s, shortly after the discovery of H. pylori, eradication therapy was established based on the use of two antibiotics (amoxicillin and clarithromycin) and one proton-pump inhibitor for 7 or 10 days (OCA7, OCA10). This therapy, recommended during the first Maastricht Consensus Conference, obtained eradication rates above 90%, and was equally effective everywhere around the world. However, over time, H. pylori has developed resistanc

Alterations in the human gut microbiome associated with Helicobacter pylori infection.

Helicobacter pylori infection (HPI) is a prevalent infectious disease associated with gastric ulcer, gastric cancer, and many nongastrointestinal disorders. To identify genes that may serve as microbial markers for HPI, we performed shotgun metagenomic sequencing of fecal samples from 313 Chinese volunteers who had undergone a C14 breath test. Through comparing differences in intestinal microbial community structure between H. pylori-positive and H. pylori-negative individuals, we identified 58 HPI-associated microbial species (P < 0.05, Wilcoxon test). A classifier based on microbial species

Management of Helicobacter pylori Infection: What Should the Surgeon Know?

Infection with Helicobacter pylori continues to represent a major global health care burden, and various national and international consensus reports and guidelines have aimed at tracking recent developments for their translation into an optimized clinical management. The most important 'innovation' is the definition of H. pylori gastritis as an infectious disease. This does imply the consideration of therapy of this condition even before the development of clinical manifestations including non-malignant and malignant gastroduodenal diseases, such as peptic ulcer disease, gastric cancer, and g

Regulation and functions of inflammasome-mediated cytokines in Helicobacter pylori infection.

Persistent stomach infection with Helicobacter pylori causes chronic mucosal inflammation (gastritis), which is widely recognized as an essential precursor to gastric cancer. The IL-1 interleukin family cytokines IL-1β and IL-18 have emerged as central mediators of mucosal inflammation. Here, we review the regulation and functions of these cytokines in H. pylori-induced inflammation and carcinogenesis.

A link between platelet to lymphocyte ratio and Helicobacter pylori infection.

PURPOSE: Chronic Helicobacter pylori gastritis affects two-thirds of the world's population and is one of the most common chronic inflammatory disorders of humans, the infection clearly results in chronic mucosal inflammation in the stomach and duodenum, which, in turn, might lead to abnormalities in gastroduodenal motility and sensitivity and is the most frequent cause of dyspepsia and peptic disease. Some studies showed that there was a correlation between low-grade inflammation as CRP and HP infection. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the presence of HP

Epigenetic Mechanisms of ATM Activation after Helicobacter pylori Infection.

Gastric cancer (GC) is the second leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide. The disease develops from the accumulation of several genetic and epigenetic changes. Among other risk factors, Helicobacter pylori infection is considered the main driving factor of GC development. H. pylori infection increases DNA damage levels and leads to epigenetic dysregulation, which may favor gastric carcinogenesis. An early step in double-strand break repair is the recruitment of ataxia-telangiectasia mutated serine/threonine kinase (ATM) to the damaged site, where it plays a key role in advancing t

TLR9 activation suppresses inflammation in response to Helicobacter pylori infection.

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) induces chronic gastritis in humans, and infection can persist for decades. One H. pylori strain-specific constituent that augments disease risk is the cag pathogenicity island. The cag island encodes a type IV secretion system (T4SS) that translocates DNA into host cells. Toll-like receptor 9 (TLR9) is an innate immune receptor that detects hypo-methylated CpG DNA motifs. In this study, we sought to define the role of the H. pylori cag T4SS on TLR9-mediated responses in vivo. H. pylori strain PMSS1 or its cagE- mutant, which fails to assemble a T4SS, were used
