BACKGROUND: Ghrelin stimulates gastric motility in rats, mice and humans. Although ghrelin and the ghrelin receptor are known to be expressed in the guinea-pig gastrointestinal tract, the effects of ghrelin on gastric motility have not been examined. PURPOSE: Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) (Sigma Chemical Co., St. Louis, Missouri) is known to contract animal as well as human detrusor muscle and recent investigations have shown an involvement of ligand gated purinergic-1 receptors in detrusor contraction.
