Interactions between sympathetic nervous system and endogenous endothelin in patients with essential hypertension.

Experimental evidence indicates that endothelin 1 stimulates the sympathetic nervous system by activation of the subtype A receptor. The aim of the present study was to assess whether this mechanism is active in humans and to investigate its potential role in the pathogenesis of essential hypertension. In 15 hypertensive patients and 12 normotensive subjects, blood pressure, heart rate, and muscle sympathetic nerve activity were evaluated during intravenous 20-minute infusion of BQ123 (0.1 mg/kg per hour), an endothelin A receptor antagonist, and sodium nitroprusside (SNP; 0.4 μg/kg per minute

Cold Pressor Test Induces Significant Changes in Internal Jugular Vein Flow Dynamics in Healthy Young Adults.

BACKGROUND The cold pressor test (CPT), which has long been used to test autonomic functions by causing sympathetic excitation, increases systolic and diastolic blood pressure and heart rate and causes coronary vasodilation within physiological limits in healthy individuals. This study aimed to evaluate internal jugular vein (IJV) flow parameters using the CPT with systolic and diastolic blood pressure and heart rate in 40 healthy volunteers aged 18-40 years. MATERIAL AND METHODS The volunteers' IJV diameter, blood flow peak velocity, and volumetric flow values were recorded. Then, their right

Circadian Regulation and Clock-Controlled Mechanisms of Glycerophospholipid Metabolism from Neuronal Cells and Tissues to Fibroblasts.

Along evolution, living organisms developed a precise timekeeping system, circadian clocks, to adapt life to the 24-h light/dark cycle and temporally regulate physiology and behavior. The transcriptional molecular circadian clock and metabolic/redox oscillator conforming these clocks are present in organs, tissues, and even in individual cells, where they exert circadian control over cellular metabolism. Disruption of the molecular clock may cause metabolic disorders and higher cancer risk. The synthesis and degradation of glycerophospholipids (GPLs) is one of the most highly regulated metabol

Creative Flow and Physiologic States in Dancers During Performance.

Pre-professional and professional dancers (n = 60) participated in this ambulatory psychophysiology study that investigated performance flow and heart rate and autonomic nervous system (ANS) function during three time periods: baseline rest, performance, and post-performance rest. To gather these results, the psychophysiology laboratory traveled to the concert hall to collect data on dancers. The self-report Flow State Scale (FSS) measured global flow, challenge-skill balance, sense of control, and autotelic experiences; it addresses important features of the creative experience of performing

Topography and morphometry of intestinal mast cells in children with Hirschsprung's disease.

Mast cells (MC) are source of many biological active compounds like cytokines, arachidonic acid derivates, proteoglicanes, prostaglandins, proteases, free oxygen radials, NGF, PAF and many more. The role of MC in pathogenesis of Hirschsprung's disease (HD) is not clear. Substances produced by MC may exert an important effect on embryology, growth, differentiation and regeneration of intestinal nervous system. Additionally, MC products modulate inflammation processes thus influencing on the clinical course of HD. Present study was established to evaluate the morphologic MC examination as a supp

Sympathetic and cardiac baroreflex function in panic disorder.

BACKGROUND: Recent reports have demonstrated increased cardiac risk, and an association with essential hypertension in patients with panic disorder. The cause is not known, but possibly involves sympathetic nervous activation. In this study, we evaluated the arterial baroreflex control of vascular sympathetic nervous outflow and cardiac baroreflex function in panic disorder patients. METHODS AND RESULTS: We studied nine patients suffering from panic disorder and ten healthy subjects. Microneurographic recording of muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) was made with simultaneous recording o

Challenges in the management of Burkitt's lymphoma.

Burkitt's lymphoma and small noncleaved Burkitt's-like lymphoma are rare and are highly aggressive forms of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma that are characterized by dysregulation of the c-myc oncogene. Patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) also appear to be at risk for developing Burkitt's lymphomas. Treatment options for Burkitt's lymphoma involve complex chemotherapy regimens that contain as many as 10 cytotoxic agents. Approximately 50%-80% of adult patients with Burkitt's lymphoma or small, noncleaved lymphoma can be cured with these intensive chemotherapy regimens, and in pediatric pop

Heart rate variability and heart rate recovery as prognostic factors.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Heart rate (HR) can appear static and regular at rest, during exercise or recovery after exercise. However, HR is constantly adjusted due to factors such as breathing, blood pressure control, thermoregulation and the renin-angiotensin system, leading to a more dynamic response that can be quantified using HRV (heart rate variability). HRV is defined as the deviation in time between successive normal heart beat and is a noninvasive method to measure the total variation in a number of HR interval. HRV can serve as measure of autonomic activity of sino-atrial node. The aim of

Sympathetic-leptin relationship in obesity: effect of weight loss.

Obese patients have high plasma leptin concentrations that do not induce the expected responses on weight regulation, suggesting a leptin resistance in obesity. Elevated leptin levels are also thought to be related to a high sympathetic nervous system (SNS) activity. This effect could be preserved, lowered, or even abolished in obesity. We planned to investigate the possible association in a longitudinal study. Ninety-five normotensive healthy women, aged 40.4 +/- 11.4 years and body mass index of 33.2 +/- 2.3 kg/m(2), were studied. Baseline leptin, fat mass, and heart rate variability were me

Effects of disease-modifying drugs on serum neurofilament light chain, chitinase-3-like-1 protein levels, and selected plasmacytoid dendritic cell biomarkers in relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a neurodegenerative central nervous system disorder causing axonal damage and disability. Relapses develop over hours or days and then subside over weeks. Disease-modifying drugs (DMDs) influence disease activity. Interferon beta-1A (IFN-b-1A) is a widely used first-line treatment for relapsing remitting MS (RRMS) that reduces central nervous system inflammation. Fingolimod affects lymphocyte trafficking. B-cell therapy (rituximab) depletes circulating CD20+ B cells in cerebrospinal fluid, but their specific effects in RRMS remain limited. OBJECTIVE: The

Relationship between HRV measurements and demographic and clinical variables in a population of patients with atrial fibrillation.

Little is known about the role of HRV in atrial fibrillation (AF) patients. Aim of our study was to assess the relationship between HRV measurements and demographic and clinical variables in a population of 274 AF patients. We selected all consecutive patients with persistent/permanent AF among whom had performed a Holter ECG in our Department from April 2010 to April 2015. Time-domain analysis of HRV was evaluated. Demographic and clinical variables were collected for each patient. At multivariable logistic regression, a higher pNN50 was associated with ACE inhibitors/ARBs (p = 0.016) and a l

[Heart rate variability in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation of various etiologies].

Heart rate variability (HRV) was assessed on 24 hour Holter ECG recordings from 32 healthy persons and 54 patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF) of different etiology (hypertension, ischemic heart disease, rheumatic mitral valve disease, idiopathic AF) aged 45-73 years. Nocturnal, diurnal and 24 hour HRV was measured. Time and frequency domain HRV measures were lower in patients with AF and underlying heart disease compared with healthy persons and for most of the parameters with patients with idiopathic AF (p<0,05). Patients with idiopathic AF compared with healthy persons had high

A MAb-based ELISA for detecting circulating antigen in CSF of patients with neurocysticercosis.

A monoclonal antibody (MAb)-based enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was evaluated for detecting circulating antigen (CAg) in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of patients with neurocysticercosis. CAg of Cysticercus Cellulosae was detected in 95 out of 116 patients with neurocysticercosis. Of the 21 neurocysticercosis patients in whom CAg was not detected, 14 had only higher density spots, 3 had one or two lower density spots and 4 had no obvious damage in their brain Computed Tomography (CT) scans. CAg was also not detected in CSF samples of patients with other diseases of the central nerv

Mechanism and prevention strategy of a bidirectional relationship between heart failure and cancer (Review).

The relationship between cancer and heart failure has been extensively studied in the last decade. These studies have focused on describing heart injury caused by certain cancer treatments, including radiotherapy, chemotherapy and targeted therapy. Previous studies have demonstrated a higher incidence of cancer in patients with heart failure. Heart failure enhances an over-activation of the sympathetic nervous system and the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, and subsequently promotes cancer development. Other studies have found that heart failure and cancer both have a common pathological

DNA and RNA antibodies in serum and CSF of multiple sclerosis and subacute sclerosing panencephalitis patients.

DNA and RNA (nucleic) antibodies were found in the CSF of 18 patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) (out of 45), 11 with subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) (out of 12) and 9 controls (out of 30). Viral (measles and rubella, by HAI) antibodies were present in all SSPE, 23 MS and 11 control patients. A clear correlation exists between (1) CSF immunological patterns, (2) oligoclonal aspect, (3) simultaneous presence of nucleic and viral antibodies, suggesting the local synthesis of both. This is confirmed by the comparison of the ratios IgG/antibodies in serum and CSF: the CSF ratio may be
