[The history of pediatric plastic surgery].

The history of pediatric plastic surgery is linked to that of paediatrics. Until the early 19th century, there was no children's hospital. Only some operations were performed before the discovery of anesthesia, aseptic and antisepsis: cleft lip repair, amputation for polydactyly. Many operations were described in the 19th century for cleft lip and palate repair, hypospadias, syndactylies. The first operation for protruding ears was performed in 1881. Pediatric plastic surgery is diversified in the 2nd half of the 20th century: cleft lip and palate, burns, craniofacial surgery, hand surgery bec…

A Concise History of Mycotoxin Research.

Toxigenic fungi and mycotoxins entered human food supplies about the time when mankind first began to cultivate crops and to store them from one season to the next, perhaps 10,000 years ago. The storage of cereals probably initiated the transition by mankind from hunter-gatherer to cultivator, at the same time providing a vast new ecological niche for fungi pathogenic on grain crops or saprophytic on harvested grain, many of which produced mycotoxins. Grains have always been the major source of mycotoxins in the diet of man and his domestic animals. In the historical context, ergotism from Cla

History of hypospadias: Lost in translation.

UNLABELLED: The evolution of hypospadias surgery can be classified under 3 periods that were closely related to advances in surgical instruments, introduction of anesthesia, and newer suture materials. Stretching dominated the early period, tunneling during the Middle Ages, and flaps during the modern period. Suture materials have included at various time silver wires, horsehair, and stainless steel. Examination and translation of the original manuscripts showed that Galen recommended stretching and suturing of glanular hypospadias and not amputation or partial penectomy as has been currently

History of the Tinnitus Research Consortium.

This article describes the creation and accomplishments of the Tinnitus Research Consortium (TRC), founded and supported through philanthropy and intended to enrich the field of tinnitus research. Bringing together a group of distinguished auditory researchers, most of whom were not involved in tinnitus research, over the fifteen years of its life it developed novel research approaches and recruited a number of new investigators into the field. The purpose of this special issue is to highlight some of the significant accomplishments of the investigators supported by the TRC. This article is pa

The History of Collagenase Clostridium Histolyticum.

INTRODUCTION: After its U.S. FDA approval in 2013, Collagenase Clostridium histolyticum (CCh) has seen increasing use as a nonoperative treatment for Peyronie's disease (PD). We review the history of CCh and trials that led to its adoption. AIM: To provide a historical and contemporary context for the evolution of Collagenase Clostridium histolyticum as a treatment modality for Peyronie's disease. METHODS: A comprehensive search of peer-reviewed literature was performed pertaining to CCh and its biochemical and clinical significance. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: The main outcome studied was the ef…

Cervical Laminoplasty: The History and the Future.

Cervical laminoplasty was developed as an alternative to cervical laminectomy for treatment of cervical myelopathy, in which hinges are created to lift the lamina. Various techniques of laminoplasty have since been developed after two prototype techniques: Hirabayashi's open-door laminoplasty and Kurokawa's spinous process splitting (double-door) laminoplasty. Several in vitro studies report superior biomechanical stability of the cervical spine after laminoplasty compared with laminectomy. In clinical situation, randomized control studies are scarce and superiority of one procedure over anoth

The lost art of the history and physical.

The important contribution of the history and physical in making a correct medical diagnosis has been known for centuries. Despite this, these skills are being undermined by technology that many physicians mistakenly believe to be the new gold standard. The authors report 2 cases in which the history and physical trumped technology in making the correct diagnosis. Medical educators need to reemphasize the importance of the history and physical. This will require changes in curriculum and intense faculty development.

History of the pineal region tumor.

The pineal gland has interested humans from millenniums. In this paper we review back in the history and the evolution of the pineal gland surgery. Originally, this surgery used to carry a high rate of morbidity and mortality. Nowadays the development of the anesthetic, radiological, surgical and intensive care techniques have been responsible of an improvement of the surgical results and better quality of life. It is always interesting to know from where we come.

[History of the radiation damage in occupations].

In the year following Röntgen`s discovery of X-rays in 1895, approximately 60 cases of hand dermatitis and hair loss induced by radiation were reported. People using X-rays in their occupation, including X-ray tube manufacturers, physicians, and engineers, experienced chronic radiation dermatitis and were the first to be diagnosed with occupational radiation exposure. Reports of later appearing disorders, including skin cancer, suffered by doctors and engineers, were regarded as serious occupational diseases. In the 1910's, blood disorders, including leukemia, in people with occupational expos

The natural history of cystocele recurrence.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Female pelvic organ prolapse is a common condition, and recurrence after surgery is considered a significant clinical issue, especially in the anterior compartment. To the best of our knowledge, there are currently no published data in the literature on the timing of recurrence. We used data obtained in clinical audit projects and a prospective surgical trial to define the natural history of cystocele recurrence. METHODS: This is an observational retrospective study utilising data of 166 patients seen at least twice after anterior colporrhaphy, obtained from four …

The history of haemophilia - a short review.

The history of haemophilia dates back to the 2nd century AD, with the first "modern" descriptions of the condition appearing during the 1800s. At that time, transfusion medicine and haemophilia became closely linked, with blood transfusion being the only possible treatment option. A turning point in the history of haemophilia came in the middle of the 20th century when researchers identified an "antihaemophilic globulin" that could reduce the clotting time in haemophilic blood, thereby paving the way for the introduction of cryoprecipitate and the first clotting factor concentrates for the tre…

The chequered history of the antiphospholipid syndrome.

Consideration of the chronology of advances in medical knowledge can provide useful insights into the pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of diseases. The antiphospholipid syndrome is an enigmatic disorder and this is reinforced by the misleading associated terminology, the adoption of which results directly from early discoveries relating to the condition. Thus the target antigen of the causative autoantibodies in antiphospholipid syndrome does not reside on phospholipid, and the frequently associated lupus anticoagulant is not restricted to subjects with systemic lupus erythematosus and, p

A brief history of hepatitis milestones.

Hepatitis has been a major plague of mankind. The history of the discovery of causative viruses is one of the most fascinating scientific adventures of this half century. Individualization of several types of hepatitis only emerged after world war two. Their identification has been associated with milestones which revolutionized medicine and public health. The discovery of HBV brought the first ever vaccine not prepared by tissue culture but initially directly from plasma and soon the first vaccine produced by genetic engineering. HBV vaccine proved to be the first "anti-cancer" vaccine by pre…

History of biological warfare and bioterrorism.

Bioterrorism literally means using microorganisms or infected samples to cause terror and panic in populations. Bioterrorism had already started 14 centuries before Christ, when the Hittites sent infected rams to their enemies. However, apart from some rare well-documented events, it is often very difficult for historians and microbiologists to differentiate natural epidemics from alleged biological attacks, because: (i) little information is available for times before the advent of modern microbiology; (ii) truth may be manipulated for political reasons, especially for a hot topic such as a b

The history of the concept of epileptic encephalopathy.

The first description of epileptic encephalopathies dates back to Dr. West who, in 1857, described the syndrome that took his name. In addition to West syndrome, in the last century other epileptic syndromes entered into the chapter of epileptic encephalopathies. Henry Gastaut has the virtue of having created the modern concept of epileptic encephalopathy and entering it into the official terminology of the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE). After the first proposal, it was further defined and refined over time.
