Hepatoprotective activity of Emblica officinalis (EO) and Chyavanaprash (CHY) extracts were studied using carbon tetrachloride (CCl(4)) induced liver injury model in rats. EO and CHY extracts were found to inhibit the hepatotoxicity produced by acute and chronic CCl(4) administration as seen from the decreased levels of serum and liver lipid peroxides (LPO), glutamate-pyruvate transaminase (GPT), and alkaline phosphatase (ALP). Although calcium supplements are widely used in the treatment of osteoporosis their beneficial effect is not conclusively established. The biochemical effects of a calcium supplement (1 g/d) given for between 6 and 36 months were studied in 20 postmenopausal osteoporotic women who had normal calcium absorption. Riboflavin deficiency and food restriction were associated with greater solubility and lesser total and insoluble collagen concentration in rat skin. Studies using 3H-proline suggest that the lower collagen concentration under these conditions could be due to a decrease in synthesis as well as slow maturation of collagen. The mechanisms underlying defective cross-link formation appear to be different in food-restricted and riboflavin-deficient rats. Half-life of soluble collagen was not affected in riboflavin deficiency, but it was slightly shorter in food-restricted weight-matched animals.

Disodium pamidronate (APD) is a potent inhibitor of bone resorption, with less risk of defective mineralization than earlier bisphosphonates. We assessed the response to six spaced low-dose intravenous infusions of APD given at intervals of approximately 6 weeks followed by weekly infusions if bone turnover remained abnormal. Three groups of 10 patients were studied, each group receiving infusions of 15, 30, or 45 mg.
