BACKGROUND: Although there are disability weights available for a wide range of health states, these do not include suicidality. This makes it difficult to evaluate the severity of suicidality in comparison with other health states. The aim of this study therefore is to estimate disability weights for suicidal thoughts and for mental distress involved in non-fatal suicide attempts.
METHODS: A Dutch expert panel of sixteen medical practitioners who were knowledgeable about suicidality estimated disability weights (DWs) for twelve health states by interpolating them on a calibrated Visual Analo

Emblematic (or symbolic) gestures allow individuals to convey a variety of thoughts and emotions ranging from approval to hostility. The use of such gestures involves the execution of a codified motor act by the addresser and its perception and decoding by the addressee. To examine underlying common and distinct neural correlates, we used fMRI tasks in which subjects viewed video clips of emblematic one-hand gestures. They were asked to (1) take the perspective of the addresser and imagine executing the gestures ("expression" condition), and to (2) take the perspective of the addressee and ima

Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) has a significant impact on the quality of life for many women. Most women do not seek medical attention for this condition. Treatment for this problem includes initial conservative therapies and then surgery is an option. More than 200 surgical procedures have been described in the literature for the treatment of stress incontinence. The gold-standard surgical treatment of SUI in patients with a mobile bladder neck and normally functioning urethra has been accomplished through a retropubic approach using either a Burch or Marshall-Marchetti-Krantz procedure.

Imagination is a key function for many human activities, such as reminiscing, learning, or planning. Unravelling its neuro-biological basis is paramount to grasp the essence of our thoughts. Previous neuroimaging studies have identified brain regions subserving the visualisation of "what?" (e.g. faces or objects) and "where?" (e.g. spatial layout) content of mental images. However, the functional role of a common set of involved regions - the frontal regions - and their interplay with the "what" and "where" regions, has remained largely unspecified. This study combines functional MRI and elect…

Juvenile hormone (JH) given at pupariation inhibits bristle formation and causes pupal cuticle formation in the abdomen of Drosophila melanogaster due to its prolongation of expression of the transcription factor Broad (BR). In a microarray analysis of JH-induced gene expression in abdominal integument, we found that Krüppel homolog 1 (Kr-h1) was up-regulated during most of adult development. Quantitative real-time PCR analyses showed that Kr-h1 up-regulation began at 10h after puparium formation (APF), and Kr-h1 up-regulation occurred in imaginal epidermal cells, persisting larval muscles, an

The earliest physical sign of differentiation in the Drosophila retina is the passage of the morphogenetic furrow across the epithelium of the eye disc. Secreted factors encoded by hedgehog (hh) and decapentaplegic (dpp) have been implicated in propagation of the furrow and the subsequent initiation of photoreceptor differentiation. The morphogenetic furrow initiates at the posterior edge of the third larval instar eye imaginal disc. Its continued progression towards the anterior is believed to depend upon secretion of Hh protein by the differentiating clusters of photoreceptors that emerge po

We have investigated the functional relationships among three loci that are required for multiple alternative cell fate decisions during adult peripheral neurogenesis in Drosophila: Notch (N), which encodes a transmembrane receptor protein, Suppressor of Hairless [Su(H)], which encodes a DNA-binding transcription factor, and the Enhancer of split gene complex [E(spl)-C], which includes seven transcription units that encode basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) repressor proteins. We describe several lines of evidence establishing that Su(H) directly activates transcription of E(spl)-C genes in respons

Play is at the heart of our first relationship. Through play we learn to communicate, gain experience and flex our imagination. Once started, the play process continues throughout our lives only becoming more sophisticated as it diversifies into areas of leisure activities, relationships and foundations for work experiences. Play for the Rett child is the first and basic stage that other children leap from, but it remains wrapped in a close relationship that she continues to need throughout her life. It is not only the key to her present but the way to her future. The aim of this lecture is to…

Prolonged exposure therapy (PE), a well-known trauma-focused cognitive behavioral treatment (TFCBT), is the most scientifically established treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among a variety of pharmacotherapies and psychotherapies. It is comprised of two types of exposure technique: imaginal exposure and in vivo exposure. This paper overviews a recent review of psychotherapies for adult chronic PTSD, the emotional processing theory and structure of PE, and the effectiveness and dissemination of PE in Japan.

This study investigates aphantasia (absence of voluntary mental imagery) and hyperphantasia (extremely vivid imagery) across multiple sensory modalities in nearly 2,000 UK participants aged 18-30. Unlike previous research focused primarily on visual imagery, this comprehensive study examined eight modalities, visual, auditory, tactile, kinesthetic, gustatory, olfactory, interoceptive, and vocal imagery, and additionally offers a preliminary exploration of emotional imagery within the same framework. Key findings reveal that 13.9% of participants exhibited aphantasia in at least one modality, s

People are able to reason about the physical dynamics of everyday objects. Bute there are theoretical disagreements about the computations that underlie this ability. One proposal is that people are running an approximate mental simulation of their environment. However, such a simulation must be limited in its resources. We applied the notion of a resource-bound simulation to a task of reasoning about liquids and showed that people's changing behavior can be explained by an approximate simulation that hits a resource limit after some time elapses. In Experiments 1 and 2, people performed well

Objective: Current efforts to build reliable brain-computer interfaces (BCI) span multiple axes from hardware, to software, to more sophisticated experimental protocols, and personalized approaches. However, despite these abundant efforts, there is still room for significant improvement. We argue that a rather overlooked direction lies in linking BCI protocols with recent advances in fundamental neuroscience.Approach: In light of these advances, and particularly the characterization of the burst-like nature of beta frequency band activity and the diversity of beta bursts, we revisit the role o

Mirror neurons show activity during both the execution (AE) and observation of actions (AO). The Mirror Neuron System (MNS) could be involved during motor imagery (MI) as well. Extensive research suggests that the cerebellum is interconnected with the MNS and may be critically involved in its activities. We gathered evidence on the cerebellum's role in MNS functions, both theoretically and experimentally. Evidence shows that the cerebellum plays a major role during AO and MI and that its lesions impair MNS functions likely because, by modulating the activity of cortical inhibitory interneurons

Motor Imagery (MI)-Brain Computer-Interfaces (BCI) illiteracy defines that not all subjects can achieve a good performance in MI-BCI systems due to different factors related to the fatigue, substance consumption, concentration, and experience in the use. To reduce the effects of lack of experience in the use of BCI systems (naïve users), this paper presents the implementation of three Deep Learning (DL) methods with the hypothesis that the performance of BCI systems could be improved compared with baseline methods in the evaluation of naïve BCI users. The methods proposed here are based on Con

The limited number of brain-computer interface based on motor imagery (MI-BCI) instruction sets for different movements of single limbs makes it difficult to meet practical application requirements. Therefore, designing a single-limb, multi-category motor imagery (MI) paradigm and effectively decoding it is one of the important research directions in the future development of MI-BCI. Furthermore, one of the major challenges in MI-BCI is the difficulty of classifying brain activity across different individuals. In this article, the transfer data learning network (TDLNet) is proposed to achieve

Motor learning relies on adjusting the performance of movements via error detection and correction. How motor learning proceeds via motor imagery, the imagination of movement, is not understood. Motor imagery-based learning is thought to rely on comparing the predicted effect of movement, resulting from the forward model, against its intended effect. Whether motor imagery-based learning uses the observed effect of movement, simulated in motor imagery, to make comparisons to the intended effect to permit error detection and correction, is an open question. To address this, transcranial magnetic…

OBJECTIVE: Women with anorexia nervosa (AN) act as if they have a larger body, as evidenced in obstacle avoidance tasks, where an allocentric perspective is adopted. This alteration emerges not only when they perform, but also when they imagine movements. However, no previous study has investigated own body centered tasks. As such, in this study we aim at documenting if women with AN show an altered behaviour also when the task requires a first-person perspective.
METHOD: We explored the performance of eleven woman affected by AN compared to eighteen matched controls, in two motor imagery tas

Objective.Motor imagery (MI), based on the theory of mirror neurons and neuroplasticity, can promote motor cortical activation in neurorehabilitation. The strategy of MI based on brain-computer interface (BCI) has been used in rehabilitation training and daily assistance for patients with hemiplegia in recent years. However, it is difficult to maintain the consistency and timeliness of receiving external stimulation to neural activation in most subjects owing to the high variability of electroencephalogram (EEG) representation across trials/subjects. Moreover, in practical application, MI-BCI

Mental rotation has attracted the interest of cognitive research on dystonia, but at the moment, contrasting data are available on whether this complex cognitive ability is impaired in the disorder. Here, we assessed spatial and egocentric mental rotation in patients with cervical dystonia (CD). Patients with CD and healthy controls were required to perform a letter rotation task (spatial mental rotation) and to judge laterality of front-facing and back-facing human images (egocentric mental rotation). CD patients were selectively impaired on letter rotation, whereas they did not differ from c

In recent decades, motor imagery (MI) based brain-computer interface (BCI) is served as a control system or rehabilitation tool for motor disabled people. But it has limited applications because of its lower classification performance (classification accuracy, Cohen's kappa coefficient and etc.). The performance depends on the feature extraction techniques and extraction of relevant features from the brain is challenging task. The existing techniques have low classification performance and are computationally inefficient. This paper introduces phase space reconstruction (PSR) to detect various
