Dietary Restraint Partially Mediates the Relationship between Impulsivity and Binge Eating Only in Lean Individuals: The Importance of Accounting for Body Mass in Studies of Restraint.

Binge eating is characteristic of eating and weight-related disorders such as binge eating disorder, bulimia nervosa, and obesity. In light of data suggest impulsivity is associated with overeating specifically in restrained eaters, this study sought to elucidate the exact nature of the associations between these variables, hypothesizing that the relationship between impulsivity and binge eating is mediated by restrained eating. We further hypothesized that the role of dietary restraint as a mediator would be moderated by body mass index (BMI). Study participants (n = 506, 50.6% female) were c

Mental disorder and threats made by noninstitutionalized people with weapons in the national comorbidity survey replication.

Controversy exists as to whether mental disorders are associated with a higher risk of violent behavior. Data from the nationally-representative National Comorbidity Survey Replication was examined. Multiple logistic regression was used to determine whether mood, anxiety, impulse control, and substance use disorders were associated with a higher rate of potentially violent behavior as assessed by threatening others with a gun or other weapon. After adjusting for sociodemographic factors, an association was found between mood, anxiety, impulse control, and substance use disorders and the rate o

Calorie Intake and Gambling: Is Fat and Sugar Consumption 'Impulsive'?

Excessive calorie intake constitutes a global public health concern, due to its associated range of untoward outcomes. Gambling is commonplace and gambling disorder is now considered a behavioral addiction in DSM-5. The relationships between calorie intake, gambling, and other types of putatively addictive and impulsive behaviors have received virtually no research attention. Two-hundred twenty-five young adults who gamble were recruited from two Mid-Western university communities in the United States using media advertisements. Dietary intake over the preceding year was quantified using the D…

Behavioral mediators of stress-related mood symptoms in adolescence & young adulthood.

BACKGROUND: Stress is a risk factor for unipolar and bipolar mood disorders, but the mechanisms linking stress to specific symptoms remain e … that higher daily stress was related to higher severity of mania, and this pathway was mediated by impulsive behaviors. Higher stress also predicted higher severity of anhedonic depression, and social withdrawal mediated this relationship. A k-means clustering analysis revealed six subgroups with divergent profiles of stress-behavior-symptom pathways. LIMITATIONS: …

Serotonergic functioning in children with oppositional defiant disorder: a sumatriptan challenge study.

BACKGROUND: Several studies support the notion that disturbances in the central serotonergic function are related to impulsive aggression. There is recent evidence from studies on 5-HT(1B) knock-out mice that this specific receptor is involved in impulsive aggressive behavior. The aim of the present study was to investigate 5-HT(1B/1D) receptor functioning in normal intelligent hospitalized children with oppositional defiant disorder (ODD). METHODS: The growth hormone (GH) response to a challenge with the 5-HT(1B/1D) agonist sumatriptan was examined in 20 children with an ODD, of whom 13 had

Inter-relationships between ADHD, ODD and impulsivity dimensions in emerging adults revealed by network analysis: extending the 'trait impulsivity hypothesis'.

BACKGROUND: The trait-impulsivity hypothesis posits impulsivity as the underlying substrate of Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) symptom expressions. The current study applied network analysis to evaluate the inter-relationships of dimensions within ADHD (inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity) and ODD (anger/irritable, vindictiveness, and argumentative/defiant behavior) with components of impulsivity as captured by the UPPS-P model (negative urgency, lack of premeditation, lack of perseverance, sensation seeking, and positive urgency).

Modeling Suicidality with Multimodal Impulsivity Characterization in Participants with Mental Health Disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Suicide is one of the leading causes of death across different age groups. The persistence of suicidal ideation and the progression of suicidal ideations to action could be related to impulsivity, the tendency to act on urges with low temporal latency, and little forethought. Quantifying impulsivity could thus help suicidality estimation and risk assessments in ideation-to-action suicidality frameworks. METHODS: To model suicidality with impulsivity quantification, we obtained questionnaires, behavioral tests, heart rate variability (HRV), and resting state functional magnetic r

Video Game Addiction in Young People (8-18 Years Old) after the COVID-19 Pandemic: The Grey Area of Addiction and the Phenomenon of "Gaming Non-Pathological Abuse (GNPA)".

INTRODUCTION: In the literature, video game addiction in youths is correlated with dysfunctional symptoms of anxiety, emotional disorders, and mood disorders, and the pandemic period of 2020-2022 has favored the aggravation of this behavioral addiction. Therefore, we identified the need to analyze this phenomenon with an emphasis on the risks and correlates related to deviance and maladjustment from a prospective perspective, seeking to understand the impact of the individual variables examined. AIM: To demonstrate whether the condition of "gaming non-pathological abuse" (GNPA) promotes psych

Parkinson's disease-related disorders in the impulsive-compulsive spectrum.

In Parkinson's disease (PD), there is increasing evidence for disorders in the impulsive-compulsive spectrum, related to the disease itself, to the pharmacological management of this disease or to both. These disorders comprise dopamine deficiency syndrome (with immediate reward seeking behaviour), dopamine dependency syndrome (with addictive behaviour), dopamine dysregulation syndrome (with both addictive behaviour and stereotyped behaviour) and impulse control disorders (such as pathological gambling, compulsive shopping, binge eating and hypersexuality). These disorders are especially seen

Examining the prevalence of ADHD and ODD among primary school students in rural Thailand: Key findings from a comprehensive school-based study.

BACKGROUND: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity/impulsivity disorder (ADHD) and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) are prevalent neurodevelopmental disorders in children, often co-occurring and leading to significant academic and behavioral challenges. Despite global studies, there is limited data on the prevalence of these disorders in rural Thailand. This research aimed to identify the prevalence of ADHD and ODD among primary school children in rural Chiang Mai, Thailand, from parent and teacher perspectives and to assess the relationships between ADHD and ODD symptoms. The role of affect-driven impulsivity in gambling cognitions: A convenience-sample study with a Spanish version of the Gambling-Related Cognitions Scale.

Background and aims Abnormal cognitions are among the most salient domain-specific features of gambling disorder. The aims of this study were: (a) to examine and validate a Spanish version of the Gambling-Related Cognitions Scale (GRCS; Raylu & Oei, 2004) and (b) to examine associations between cognitive distortion levels, impulsivity, and gambling behavior. Methods This study first recruited a convenience sample of 500 adults who had gambled during the previous year. Participants were assessed using the Spanish version of GRCS (GRCS-S) questionnaire, the UPPS-P impulsivity questionnaire, meas

Aggression, impulsivity, and central nervous system serotonergic responsivity in a nonpatient sample.

To test the hypothesis that traits of aggression and impulsivity correlate negatively with central serotonergic system function in a nonpatient population, a standard fenfluramine challenge (for assessment of serotonergic responsivity) and behavioral measurements germane to aggression/impulsivity were administered to a community-derived sample of 119 men and women. In men, peak prolactin responses to fenfluramine correlated significantly with an interview-assessed life history of aggression (r = -.40, p < .002), the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (r = -.30, p < .03), and traits of Conscientiousne

Compulsive features in the eating disorders: a role for trauma?

There is considerable evidence of a link between reported childhood trauma and the current presence of impulsive behaviors in eating-disordered populations. However, there is no research testing the possibility of links with compulsive behaviors in this group, despite evidence that both impulsive and compulsive behaviors can serve to affect regulation functions. This study of 62 eating-disordered women examined potential links between different forms of reported childhood trauma (emotional, physical, sexual) and current compulsive behaviors (cleaning, checking). Each woman was interviewed to e…

Childhood abuse as a risk factor for suicidal behavior in borderline personality disorder.

A childhood history of sexual or physical abuse is highly prevalent in borderline personality disorder (BPD) and is associated with self-destructive behavior in clinical and nonclinical samples. Viewing BPD as a "high risk" disorder, we asked if childhood abuse was a risk factor for adult suicidal behavior or if it was related to other known risk factors for suicide in BPD. A semistructured Abuse History was obtained in 61 criteria-defined BPD patients, who were characterized by structured interviews and self-reports for Axis I disorders, Suicide History, BPD severity, hopelessness, impulsivit

Predictors of condom use in sexually active adolescents.

Unprotected sexual intercourse places a substantial number of adolescents at risk for sexually transmitted disease (STD) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. While the most effective means of preventing STD/HIV infection among sexually active adolescents is consistent condom use, little is known about the factors that influence their consistent use among adolescents. This study of adolescents (n = 1049, mean age = 16.2 years) found that of the 266 teens who recently became sexually active, only 29% reported using condoms consistently. Consistent condom use was more frequent in mal

Disordered Decision Making: A Cognitive Framework for Apathy and Impulsivity in Huntington's Disease.

A caregiver's all-too-familiar narrative - "He doesn't think through what he does, but mostly he does nothing." Apathy and impulsivity, debilitating and poorly understood, commonly co-occur in Huntington's disease (HD). HD is a neurodegenerative disease with manifestations bridging clinical neurology and psychiatry. In addition to movement and cognitive symptoms, neurobehavioral disturbances, particularly apathy and impulsivity, are prevalent features of HD, occurring early in the disease course, often worsening with disease progression, and substantially reducing quality of life.
