Are Borderline Personality Disorder Features Differentially Related to Pre-Incarceration Alcohol, Cannabis, Cocaine, and Opioid Dependence Among People Recently Incarcerated in Jail?

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) and substance use disorders (SUDs) commonly co-occur across various settings. However, little research has examined how BPD features relate to specific types of SUDs. This study examined whether BPD features assessed shortly after incarceration were differentially related to symptoms of dependence on alcohol, cannabis, cocaine, and opioids experienced in the 12 months prior to incarceration among 510 people recently incarcerated in jail. Follow-up multigroup analyses evaluated whether gender or race moderated the relation of BPD features to the four SUDs. …

Spotlight on the Safety Net: Connecting People Released from Incarceration to Essential Health Services: The North Carolina Formerly Incarcerated Transition (FIT) Program.

Premature ventricular complexes (PVCs) are a common cause of palpitations. Related symptoms include difficulty breathing, chest pain, fatigue, and dizziness. PVCs are also commonly detected incidentally on electrocardiography, outpatient ambulatory monitoring, and inpatient telemetry. Treatment goals include palliating symptoms, restoring cardiac function if affected, and preventing progression to tachycardia-related cardiomyopathy if the PVC burden is high, even in patients without symptoms. Responses to caffeine reduction, cessation of stimulants, and stress reduction are inconsistent. Aerob

Early introduction of complementary foods among infants exposed to maternal incarceration in utero.

BackgroundEarly nutrition is critical to later health outcomes. Infants exposed to maternal incarceration are a marginalized population and may be at elevated risk for suboptimal feeding.AimTo assess adherence to recommended timing of complementary food introduction among infants exposed to maternal incarceration in utero.MethodsWe analyzed data from 69 infants and caregivers in Georgia. Formerly incarcerated mothers (n = 17) and nonmaternal caregivers (n = 52) reported timing of complementary food introduction. Regression analyses assessed associations with independent variables, including po…

Capturing incarceration in the medical record: we cannot manage what we cannot measure.

Nearly 2 million people are incarcerated in US jails and prisons, where they experience disproportionate burdens of chronic disease, mental illness, substance use disorders, and infectious diseases. Although many receive specialty or acute care in community hospitals, incarceration status is rarely captured in clinical or administrative data, rendering this population largely invisible to quality-improvement efforts, research, and health equity initiatives. Existing identification strategies-including International Classification of Diseases (ICD) codes capturing social determinants of health …

Public Support for Incarceration Declines With Exposure to Evidence That Prison Increases Reoffending.

How might public sentiment respond to information that incarceration may not always achieve one of its core goals of deterring crime or that it could even, perversely, increase reoffending? Across three experiments, participants provided prison sentence length recommendations for a violent or nonviolent criminal case vignette. Before doing so, they were randomized to view either criminogenic evidence (incarceration increases reoffending), deterrent evidence (incarceration decreases reoffending), "no-effect" evidence (incarceration has no effect on reoffending), or no evidence at all. We predic…

The impact of maternal incarceration on mothers and children: A scoping review protocol.

Globally, female incarceration rates have risen in recent decades. Estimates indicate that between 60-80% of incarcerated women are mothers. Maternal incarceration (MI) is associated with negative and often enduring implications for both the mother and child. Recognising the risk of harmful outcomes, evidence-based support for both populations is essential. However, this broad research topic draws interest from academics and practitioners across many distinct but overlapping disciplines, each with different priorities, and methodological and theoretical approaches. Interdisciplinary collaborat…

An Educational Intervention to Improve Knowledge of Nurses Caring for Patients Experiencing Incarceration.

BACKGROUND: Incarcerated people have high rates of chronic health conditions but receive care from staff who have limited training on their unique medical, legal, and ethical care needs. There are few documented educational nursing interventions related to the care of incarcerated patients. METHOD: The authors created and disseminated a brief educational intervention for nurses on the care needs unique to incarcerated patients and subsequently surveyed the nurses to determine their comfort level and knowledge of best practices when caring for this population. RESULTS: Nurses completed a post

Natural history of inguinal hernia in neonates and infants: clinical regression and incarceration.

PURPOSE: In our institution, infants with inguinal hernias are managed with elective repair at approximately 1 year of age to reduce perioperative complications and allow for possible clinical regression. This study aimed to clarify the natural history of infantile inguinal hernia and identify factors associated with clinical regression and incarceration. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective chart review of patients diagnosed before 1 year of age between 2015 and 2023, supplemented with telephone follow-ups to confirm clinical regression. Factors associated with clinical regression were anal…

MRI in the incarceration of the gravid uterus: From diagnosis to individualized management.

BACKGROUND: Incarceration of the gravid uterus (IGU) is a rare but serious obstetric condition that demands precise diagnosis for optimal management. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the value of MRI in the diagnosis and individualized management of IGU. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed six patients with IGU admitted to the institution from November 2022 and September 2025. Clinical data like gravidity and parity, gestational weeks of diagnosis and delivery, clinical management and pregnancy outcomes. Imaging findings from MRI and ultrasound were compared, including assessment of cervical elongat…

Uterine Incarceration Caused by Adenomyosis: A Case Report With Review of Relevant Literature.

Although uterine incarceration is typically associated with pregnancy, this report presents a rare case of uterine incarceration in a non-pregnant woman, highlighting adenomyosis as an uncommonly and underrecognized etiology, distinct from the typical pregnancy-related causes. A 49-year-old non-pregnant woman presented with acute urinary retention and lower abdominal pain. Imaging revealed a retroverted, incarcerated uterus. The key distinguishing feature was the pathological finding: the incarceration was not solely due to adhesions or congenital factors but was primarily caused by significan…

Incarceration is associated with higher mortality after trauma: An unreported health care disparity.

BACKGROUND: While the United States has the highest incarceration rate worldwide, at nearly 1% of the adult population (more than 2 million people), insights regarding health disparities in this population remain limited. This retrospective cohort study represents the largest national database analysis of incarcerated trauma patients to date and investigates whether incarceration status is an independent risk factor for poor outcomes after trauma for US adults. METHODS: We analyzed data from the National Trauma Data Bank from 2017 to 2018. Using multilevel logistic regression, we measured ris…

Family incarceration and barriers to mental health care among low-income US veterans.

BACKGROUND: Family member incarceration is a risk factor for mental health challenges. However, less research has investigated the relationship between family member incarceration and barriers to mental health services. METHODS: Data were drawn from the 2023 National Veteran Homeless and Other Poverty Experiences (NV-HOPE) Survey, a nationally representative sample of US veterans living at or below 300 % of the federal poverty level (N = 978). Logistic regression models were used to examine the association between family member incarceration and self-reported barriers to mental health care, a…

Estimating Health Condition Prevalence Among a Statewide Cohort with Recent Homelessness or Incarceration.

BACKGROUND: Public health data systems have limited ability to provide timely, population-level information for people with severe and multiple disadvantages, such as individuals with recent homelessness or incarceration. OBJECTIVE: To generate prevalence estimates for physical health, mental health, and substance use conditions in a statewide cohort that included individuals with recent incarceration or homelessness. DESIGN: This observational cohort analysis was completed in July 2025 and used linked statewide electronic health record (EHR) and administrative data through the Minnesota Ele…

Left postpartum diaphragmatic hernia with colonic incarceration: a rare emergency after vaginal delivery.

A 34-year-old multiparous woman presented three days after spontaneous vaginal delivery with progressive abdominal distension and left-sided dyspnea. Computed tomography imaging revealed an 8 cm left posterolateral diaphragmatic hernia containing the splenic flexure and omentum, associated with upstream bowel dilation and massive ascites. Emergency laparotomy confirmed incarceration of viable colonic and omental structures. After gentle reduction, the defect was repaired using interrupted non-absorbable sutures, and thoracoabdominal drains were placed. The postoperative course was uneventful. …

Structural Racism, Mass Incarceration, and Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Severe Maternal Morbidity.

IMPORTANCE: Racial and ethnic inequities in the criminal-legal system are an important manifestation of structural racism. However, how these inequities may influence the risk of severe maternal morbidity (SMM) and its persistent racial and ethnic disparities remains underinvestigated. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between county-level inequity in jail incarceration rates comparing Black and White individuals and SMM risk in California. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This population-based cross-sectional study used state-wide data from California on all live hospital births at 20…
