Electroconvulsive therapy research in India: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), since its introduction, remains one of psychiatry's most effective treatments. India has contributed substantially to research across its clinical, technical, ethical, and sociocultural dimensions. Despite this extensive body of work, the evidence has remained scattered and heterogeneous, without a single comprehensive synthesis. AIM: The present review sought to systematically summarize the scope of ECT research conducted in India. METHODS: Following PRISMA-ScR guidelines, a systematic search of major databases and Indian psychiatric journals was…

Trends of severe human metapneumovirus infections in India.

BACKGROUND: In December 2024 and early January 2025, China reported increased acute respiratory infections with increased detections of seasonal influenza, rhinovirus, RSV and hMPV during the Northern Hemisphere winter. We strengthened hMPV surveillance through the existing pan-India surveillance network for acute respiratory illness (ARI) and severe acute respiratory infection (SARI). METHODOLOGY: To rapidly generate nationwide situational data without overburdening laboratories already performing routine respiratory virus surveillance, each site was asked to test up to five eligible SARI sa…

Heterogeneity of type 2 diabetes in rural India.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of diabetes continues to rise in India. The increase in diabetes, which has been previously concentrated in urban areas, is now also occurring in rural India, even though the rural population is predominantly non-obese/lean, undernourished, and physically active. Type 2 diabetes and its pathophysiology (hyperinsulinemia and insulin resistance) among the obese, overnourished, and physically inactive urban populations are very well characterized. However, there is a paucity of such characterization among those non-obese/lean and undernourished. We attempted to characte…

Threatened Vultures of India: Population, Ecology, and Conservation.

The objective of this review is to assess the population status, ecology, and conservation efforts for threatened, that includes critically endangered, endangered and vulnerable vulture species in India. Vultures are integral to ecosystem health, functioning as natural scavengers by consuming carcasses and preventing the spread of infectious diseases to humans and other animals. India is home to nine vulture species, of which four are critically endangered, one is endangered, three are near-threatened, and one is of least concern according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature.…

Molecular Characterization of Paragonimus westermani from South India.

PURPOSE: Paragonimus westermani is the most common lung fluke infecting humans in Asia. This study aimed to molecularly characterize adult P. westermani from the south India (Kerala) using ITS-2, partial 28 S rDNA and partial cox1 gene sequences. METHODS: Adult flukes were recovered from the lungs of a tiger (Panthera tigris) (n = 10), a jungle cat (Felis chaus) (n = 6) and a domesticated dog (Canis familiaris) (n = 4). ITS-2, partial 28 SrDNA and partial cox1 gene sequences were amplified by polymerase chain reaction and a concatenated phylogenetic tree was constructed with these three marke…

Incidence of Scrub Typhus in Rural South India.

BACKGROUND: Hospital studies suggest that scrub typhus is a leading cause of severe undifferentiated fever in regions across Asia where the disease is endemic, but the population-based incidence of infection and illness has been little studied. METHODS: We conducted a population-based cohort study to assess epidemiologic and clinical characteristics of scrub typhus in 37 villages in Tamil Nadu, India, where the disease is highly endemic. Study participants were visited every 6 to 8 weeks over a period of 2 years; a venous blood sample was obtained from those who had had fever since the last v…

Dengue cerebellitis in middle childhood from South India.

We had a girl in middle childhood, who presented with fever of 7 days duration, vomiting, abdominal pain, headache, myalgia and arthralgia. The child was conscious with signs of shock. With the provisional diagnosis of dengue fever, enteric fever or scrub typhus, the child was given all supportive management. Lab investigations covering the fever panel were sent. Within 24 hours of admission, the child developed horizontal nystagmus, diplopia and intermittent dizziness. Fundus examination showed papilloedema. MRI brain showed hyperintensity of the cerebellum in T2 sections suggestive of cerebe

Eliminating Cervical Cancer in India: Challenges and Prospects.

Cervical cancer is a malignancy with a well-established viral origin linked to high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) types. Globally, there are 348,709 estimated deaths among 662,301 cervical cancer cases. India faces a disproportionately high burden, contributing to 79,906 of these deaths and accounting for over 22% of global deaths. The nation's high mortality rate is attributable to the low rate of cervical cancer screening and HPV vaccination uptake. There is a greater impact of cervical cancer on those of lower socioeconomic status and a cultural stigma surrounding sexually transmitted inf…

Linezolid and Meropenem for Nocardia otitidiscaviarum Actinomycetoma, India.

Treatment of actinomycotic mycetoma with joint involvement is challenging. We present a patient in India with actinomycotic mycetoma who reached complete cure and remission after linezolid and meropenem treatment with a 2-year posttreatment follow-up. Clinicians should use novel drug regimens based on subspecies variations of Nocardia and regional drug susceptibility patterns to guide therapy.

Vitamin D deficiency among pregnant women in India.

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin involved in the regulation of calcium homeostasis and thus is essential for a healthy skeletal system. The blood samples from pregnant females coming at the facility were tested for Vitamin D levels as a part of routine Ante natal care (ANC). We report that 130 (61.9%) pregnant women had insufficient Vitamin D levels (12-20ng/mL) and 56 (26.6%) pregnant Women were having Vitamin D Levels (20ng/mL). Moreover, the mean Vitamin D (ng/mL) level in pregnant women was 14.3 ±5.2 ng/ml. Thus, there was a deficiency of vitamin D in most of the ANC mothers registered i

Alcohol use disorder research in India: An update.

BACKGROUND: Despite alcohol use being a risk factor for numerous health-related conditions and alcohol use disorder (AUD) recognized as a disease, there was limited research in India until 2010. This narrative review aims to evaluate AUD-related research in India from 2010 to July 2023. METHODS: A PubMed search used key terms for AUD in India after 2010. Indian and international journals with regional significance that publish alcohol-related research were searched by each author individually. These were then collated, and duplicates were removed. In addition, we also conducted a gray literat…

Protecting Child Health From Air Pollution in India.

Recent research has underscored the diverse ways in which air pollution detrimentally affects child health in India. Notably, India shoulders one of the highest burdens of mortality of children under five years of age globally due to exposure to air pollution. Distinct mitigation strategies are vital to reduce air pollution exposure and its resultant health burdens among children in India when compared to strategies applicable in the global West. This necessity arises due to the substantial influence of residential combustion of solid fuels, and considerable disparities prevalent among India's…
