Nanosuspension-based Ocular Therapeutics for Infection Control: Integrating Mucin Interactions and Tear Film Dynamics.

Ocular infections can affect the ocular surface and adnexal structures, intraocular structures, or both. Infections of the ocular surface and adnexa often arise from the invasion of commensals when typical barriers are compromised, which includes infectious blepharitis, conjunctivitis, keratitis, dacryocystitis, and orbital infections, among others. Intraocular infections may develop due to localised trauma or as part of a systemic condition. A variety of viruses, bacteria, fungi, protozoa, and helminths can cause intraocular illness. Occasionally, ocular abnormalities are the only external cl

Improving infection control in nursing homes: Enhanced barrier precautions and multidrug-resistant organism colonization.

BACKGROUND: Nursing home residents have a high prevalence of multidrug-resistant organism (MDRO) colonization. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance recommends enhanced barrier precautions (EBP) for residents with novel or targeted MDROs and residents with indwelling medical devices or wounds, regardless of MDRO status. The guidance permits facilities to apply EBP to residents colonized with additional MDROs, as appropriate. METHODS: This study reports on prospective admission surveillance cultures collected during a trial evaluating EBP in 4 Maryland nursing homes. Our objectiv

Establishing a chicken embryo model for studying infection control of a novel lipid nanoparticle.

The rise of antibiotic-resistant infections highlights the urgent need for alternative therapeutic strategies. Monoglyceride-based lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) offer both antimicrobial activity and the potential for controlled drug delivery. In this study, LNPs with diameters of 230-350 nm and ζ-potential of approximately -35 mV demonstrated high colloidal stability and strong antibacterial efficacy in vitro, achieving complete growth inhibition of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) at 0.04 mg/mL and Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Enteritidis (S. Enteritidis) at 0.9 mg/mL. To bridge

Toxoplasma gondii at the Host Interface: Immune Modulation and Translational Strategies for Infection Control.

Toxoplasma gondii is an intracellular protozoan found worldwide that is capable of infecting nearly all warm-blooded animals, including humans. Its parasitic success lies in its capacity to create chronic infections while avoiding immune detection, altering host immune responses, and disrupting programmed cell death pathways. This review examines the complex relationship between T. gondii and host immunity, focusing on how the parasite influences innate and adaptive immune responses to survive in immune-privileged tissues. We present recent findings on the immune modulation specific to various

Skin repair and infection control in diabetic, obese mice using bioactive laser-activated sealants.

Conventional wound approximation devices, including sutures, staples, and glues, are widely used but risk of wound dehiscence, local infection, and scarring can be exacerbated in these approaches, including in diabetic and obese individuals. This study reports the efficacy and quality of tissue repair upon photothermal sealing of full-thickness incisional skin wounds using silk fibroin-based laser-activated sealants (LASEs) containing copper chloride salt (Cu-LASE) or silver nanoprisms (AgNPr-LASE), which absorb and convert near-infrared (NIR) laser energy to heat. Co-infection mathematical model for HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis with optimal control in Ethiopia.

The co-epidemics of HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis (TB) outbreak is one of a serious disease in Ethiopia that demands integrative approaches to combat its transmission. In contrast, epidemiological co-infection models often considered a single latent case and recovered individuals with TB. To bridge this gap, we presented a new optimal HIV-TB co-infection model that considers both high risk and low risk latent TB cases with taking into account preventive efforts of both HIV and TB diseases, case finding for TB and HIV/AIDS treatment. This study aimed to develop optimal HIV/AIDS-TB co-infection math

Helicobacter pylori Infection: Current Status and Future Prospects on Diagnostic, Therapeutic and Control Challenges.

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection, which affects approximately half of the world's population, remains a serious public health problem. As H. pylori infection leads to a number of gastric pathologies, including inflammation, gastroduodenal ulcers, and malignancies, early detection and treatment are crucial to preventing the spread of the infection. Multiple extragastric complications, such as iron deficiency anaemia, immune thrombocytopenic purpura, vitamin B12 deficiency, diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular diseases, and certain neurological disorders, have also been linked to H. pylori

Exploring the perioperative infection control practices & incidence of surgical site infections in rural India.

BACKGROUND: Surgical site infections (SSIs) affect around a third of patients undergoing surgeries worldwide, annually. It is heterogeneously distributed with a higher burden in low and middle-income countries. Although rural and semi-urban hospitals cater to 60-70% of the Indian population, scarce data regarding SSI rates are available from such hospitals. The study aimed to determine the prevalent SSI prevention practices and existing SSI rates in the smaller rural and semi-urban hospitals in India. METHODS: This is a prospective study performed in two phases involving surgeons and their ho

Immune Control in Repeated Babesia microti Infection in a Patient With B-Cell Deficiency.

The immunology of human babesiosis is poorly investigated. We present a comprehensive investigation of a 75-year-old man with B-cell deficiency who experienced 3 episodes of babesiosis over a 6-year period. Slowly evolving clinical immunity was observed, as evidenced by milder clinical symptoms and lower peak parasite burden after each subsequent babesiosis episode. The patient exhibited several striking immunologic findings. First, the patient had exceptionally high Babesia microti-specific antibodies despite very few circulating B cells, which predominantly coexpressed CD27 (memory marker) a

cGAS-STING Pathway Activation during Trypanosoma cruzi Infection Leads to Tissue-Dependent Parasite Control.

Host cell invasion by Trypanosoma cruzi is a markedly silent process, with limited host transcriptional changes indicative of innate immune recognition, except for a modest type I IFN (IFN-I) response. In this study, we show that T. cruzi-induced IFN-β production was nearly abolished in primary murine cGAS-/- or stimulator of IFN genes (STING)-deficient (STINGGt) macrophages and fibroblasts. T. cruzi infection did not impact the ability of IFN-regulatory factor reporter macrophages to respond to classical cGAS-STING agonists, indicating that the limited IFN-β induction is not due to active par
