Examining the inaccurate reproductive health messaging of crisis pregnancy centers: A comparative qualitative study.

OBJECTIVES: Given the prevalence of inaccurate or misleading health messaging linked to crisis pregnancy centers (CPCs) in the literature, we sought to understand what role, if any, standardized training materials might play in perpetuating common themes in reproductive health misinformation. STUDY DESIGN: We identified inaccurate health messages present in qualitative interviews with 10 staff members from 8 CPCs in Ohio. Separately, we conducted a content analysis of training manuals from two parent organizations, Care Net and Heartbeat International, to understand the form and substance of

Access to healthcare for disabled persons. How are blind people reached by HIV services?

UNLABELLED: Disabled people are overlooked and marginalised globally. There is a lack of information on blind people and HIV-related services and it is unclear how HIV-services target blind people in a sub-Saharan urban setting. OBJECTIVE: To explore how blind people are reached by HIV-services in Kampala, Uganda. METHOD: A purposeful sample of blind people and seeing healthcare workers were interviewed, and data on their opinions and experiences were collected. The data were analysed by qualitative content analysis, with a focus on manifest content. RESULTS: Three categories emerged from t

Do delays in data availability limit the implementation of near real-time vaccine safety surveillance using the Clinical Practice Research Datalink?

PURPOSE: Near real-time vaccine safety surveillance (NRTVSS) using electronic health records has been used to detect timely vaccine safety signals. Trial implementation of NRTVSS using the Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD) has shown that there is limited power to detect safety signals for rare events. Delays in recording outcomes and receiving data influence the power and timeliness to identify a signal. Our work aimed to compare how different sources of delays influence power and expected time to signal to implement NRTVSS using CPRD. METHODS: We studied seasonal influenza vaccine/G

Deploying a new system for recording and managing information during an emergency to aid decision making.

The management of the huge amount of information generated during an emergency is an important tool for effective response and short-term recovery. A key part of that management is the ability to make the information accessible to everyone responding to and affected by the emergency. This paper describes an IT-based emergency planning information management system developed by Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council in partnership with BT, which allows for the logging, actioning and dissemination of information generated during an emergency. A key component of the management system is its geogr

Commentary: Processes of pre-clinical and clinical vaccine development public data sharing within the NIAID collaborative influenza vaccine innovation centers (CIVICs).

The 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic increased efforts for rapid data sharing and dissemination among researchers as well as to data repositories. Researchers and studies prioritized data sharing, which increased understanding of SARS-CoV-2's pathology. Eventually, this effort to maximize collaboration and data dissemination, led to the development of mRNA vaccines. This successful effort has highlighted the importance of data sharing and the implementation of data management policies, including the National Institutes of Health's (NIH) Data Sharing Policy of 2023. Moreover, progra

What do Australians affected by cancer think about oncology researchers sharing research data? A cross-sectional survey.

AIM: Previous research has shown patients and the public in Australia generally support medical researchers in making de-identified research data available to other scientists. However, this research has focussed on certain types of data and recipients. We surveyed Australians affected by cancer to characterize their attitudes toward the sharing of research data with multiple third parties, including the public. METHODS: A short, anonymous online survey of Australians with a previous diagnosis of cancer was advertised between October 27, 2022, and February 27, 2023. Quantitative responses wer

Using a community-engaged health informatics approach to develop a web analytics research platform for sharing data with community stakeholders.

Marginalized communities are rarely included in the planning of research relevant to their own health or have access to research data. We implemented a community-based participatory research approach in developing a new health informatics system, WARP (Web Analytics Research Platform), to enable stakeholders to access and analyze research data. We leveraged data from a cohort study of 751 patients in the Transitions Clinic Network (TCN), a network of clinical programs serving patients with a history of incarceration. WARP holds de-identified, patient data, streamlines data processing (i.e. tra

What Happens After the Demonstration Phase? The Sustainability of Canada's At Home/Chez Soi Housing First Programs for Homeless Persons with Mental Illness.

This research examined the sustainability of Canada's At Home/Chez Soi Housing First (HF) programs for homeless persons with mental illness 2 years after the end of the demonstration phase of a large (more than 2000 participants enrolled), five-site, randomized controlled trial. Qualitative interviews were conducted with 142 participants (key informants, HF staff, and persons with lived experience) to understand sustainability outcomes and factors that influenced those outcomes. Also, a self-report HF fidelity measure was completed for nine HF programs that continued after the demonstration pr

Standardization proposal of soft tissue artefact description for data sharing in human motion measurements.

Soft tissue artefact (STA) represents one of the main obstacles for obtaining accurate and reliable skeletal kinematics from motion capture. Many studies have addressed this issue, yet there is no consensus on the best available bone pose estimator and the expected errors associated with relevant results. Furthermore, results obtained by different authors are difficult to compare due to the high variability and specificity of the phenomenon and the different metrics used to represent these data. Therefore, the aim of this study was twofold: firstly, to propose standards for description of STA;

Information sources of self-care strategies for persons living with HIV.

OBJECTIVES: A number of studies have been conducted to identify the self-care strategies that are used by persons living with chronic illnesses to manage their symptoms, but little work has been done to identify the primary information source for these self-care strategies. METHODS: We conducted an anonymous online survey with 1373 persons living with HIV to identify the self-care strategies they use to manage 28 commonly experienced symptoms. Following their report of their symptoms and self-care strategies, we asked an open-ended question to identify where the participant obtained the infor

The impact of new national HIV testing guidelines at a district general hospital in an area of high HIV seroprevalence.

The latest UK national human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) testing guidelines, released in September 2008, state that HIV testing should be offered to all patients with indicator conditions and considered in all general medical admissions in high-prevalence areas. We audited testing rates at Blackpool Victoria Hospital, a high-prevalence area, one year before and one year after the publication of the new guidelines. In the year after publication the rate of HIV testing in patients with indicator diseases was as follows: hepatitis B 6%, hepatitis C 28%, tuberculosis 9% and lymphoma 14%. The over

The value of written summaries of genetic consultations.

Many individuals who attend genetic counselling perceive themselves as having a duty to disseminate the information they obtain to other relatives. Given that individuals often experience difficulty in recalling the information they receive during consultations, it can be argued that there is a potential for the miscommunication of genetic information within families. This study investigated women's perceptions and use of written summaries of genetic consultations. 40 women were interviewed following their attendance at genetic counseling for breast/ovarian cancer. Attitudes about the written

Knowledge, attitudes and practice in regard to AIDS: the case of social science students at the University of Bophuthatswana.

The necessity of AIDS educational campaigns is to reduce the spread of HIV infection by changing attitudes and practices related to high-risk behaviours. However, before such programmes are implemented a needs assessment should be conducted. This includes the existing knowledge and attitudes and sexual practices of the specific risk-group. In this study the risk-group were social science students at the University of Bophuthatswana. The majority of the respondents showed a general knowledge about AIDS in terms of its main symptoms, common modes of transmission and the non-availability of a cur
