The study was designed to explore the improvement effect of CSPCM (compound small peptide of Chinese medicine) on intestinal immunity and microflora through the treatment of different doses of CSPCM. A total of 100 male Kunming mice were weighed and divided into five groups, namely, group A (control group), group B (model group), group C (0.1 g/kg·bw CSPCM), group D (0.2 g/kg·bw CSPCM), and group E (0.4 g/kg·bw CSPCM). The use of CTX (cyclophosphamide) caused a series of negative effects: the secretion of IL-2, IL-22, TNF-α, sIgA, length of the villi, and the area of Pey's node were significan

Intestinal oxalate transport involves Cl- /HCO3- exchangers but how this transport is regulated is not currently known. NHE3 (Slc9a3), an apical Na+ /H+ exchanger, is an established target for regulation of electroneutral NaCl absorption working in concert with Cl- /HCO3- exchangers. To test whether NHE3 could be involved in regulation of intestinal oxalate transport and renal oxalate handling we compared urinary oxalate excretion rates and intestinal transepithelial fluxes of 14 C-oxalate and 22 Na+ between NHE3 KO and wild-type (WT) mice. NHE3 KO kidneys had lower creatinine clearance sugges

BACKGROUND: The intestinal barrier is a delicate structure composed of a single layer of epithelial cells, the mucus, commensal bacteria, immune cells, and antibodies. Furthermore, a wealth of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) can be found in the mucus and defend the mucosa. Different lines of investigations now point to a prominent pathophysiological role of defensins, an important family of AMPs, in the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease and, particularly, in small intestinal Crohn's disease.
PURPOSE: In this review, we introduce the different antimicrobial peptides of the intestinal mu

Phylogenetically diverse polar and subpolar marine teleost fishes have evolved antifreeze proteins (AFPs) or antifreeze glycoproteins (AFGPs) to avoid inoculative freezing by internalized ice. For over three decades since the first fish antifreeze (AF) protein was discovered, many studies of teleost freezing avoidance showed hepatic AF synthesis and distribution within the circulation as pivotal in preventing the blood, and therefore the fish, from freezing. We have uncovered an important twist to this long-held paradigm: the complete absence of liver synthesis of AFGPs in any life stage of th

The genes encoding the enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) type III secretion system (TTSS) and five effector proteins secreted by the TTSS are located on the locus of enterocyte effacement (LEE) pathogenicity island. Deletion of tir, which encodes one of these effector proteins, results in a profound reduction (approximately 10,000-fold) in EHEC colonization of the infant rabbit intestine, but the in vivo phenotypes of other LEE genes are unknown. Here, we constructed in-frame deletions in escN, the putative ATPase component of the TTSS, and the genes encoding the four other LEE-encoded

It has been demonstrated that nerve fibres storing immunoreactivity of vasoactive intestinal polypeptide, peptide histidine iso-leucine, neuropeptide Y, substance P, calcitonin gene-related peptide, galanin, and cholecystokinin exists in the thyroid, though the content of these neuropeptides is lower in the thyroid than in other organs, like in the gut. Furthermore, the parafollicular C-cells have been shown to harbour several different peptides: calcitonin, somatostatin, calcitonin gene-related peptide, gastrin-releasing peptide, katacalcin and helodermin. In addition, other regulatory peptid

Background/Objectives: Sleep deprivation (SD) induces the accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the intestine, causing inflammation in the intestine, thereby damaging the intestinal epithelial barrier function. As a traditional Chinese medicine, Dendrobium huoshanense (DHS) modulates intestinal flora, maintains the intestinal mucosal barrier, and promotes gastrointestinal motility and digestive secretion. However, the role and mechanism of DHS in improving SD-induced intestinal injury have not been fully studied. Methods: The SD model was established by subjecting rats to complete S

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Abetalipoproteinemia (ABL) is a rare recessive monogenic disease due to MTTP (microsomal triglyceride transfer protein) mutations leading to the absence of plasma apoB-containing lipoproteins. Here we characterize a new ABL case with usual clinical phenotype, hypocholesterolemia, hypotriglyceridemia but normal serum apolipoprotein B48 (apoB48) and red blood cell vitamin E concentrations.
METHODS: Histology and MTP activity measurements were performed on intestinal biopsies. Mutations in MTTP were identified by Sanger sequencing, quantitative digital droplet and long-range

Gammadelta T cells are present in the mucosal intestinal epithelia and secrete factors necessary to maintain tissue integrity. Ags recognized by these cells are poorly defined, although in mice non-classical MHC class I molecules have been implicated. Since MHC class I-like CD1 receptors are widely expressed at the surface of epithelial and dendritic intestinal cells and have the capacity to present lipid Ags to T cells, we hypothesized that these molecules might present autologous and/or exogenous phospholipids to intestinal gammadelta T lymphocytes. Intraepithelial T lymphocytes from normal

OBJECTIVES: To examine the microflora of the upper small intestine in patients with seropositive rheumatoid arthritis (RA) using a combination of microbial cultivation and tests for microbial metabolic activity.
METHODS: Twenty five patients with seropositive RA, 12 achlorhydric control subjects, and 11 control subjects with normal gastric acid secretion were investigated. Disease activity was evaluated in the patients with RA by three different indices. Eight (32%) of the patients with RA had hypochlorhydria or achlorhydria. The acid secretory capacity was determined with pentagastrin stimul

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) released by parasitic helminths are increasingly recognized as key mediators of host-parasite communication; however, their functional impact on human intestinal epithelial cells remains poorly characterized. Here, we investigated the immunomodulatory and redox-related effects of EVs secreted by third-stage larvae of the zoonotic nematode Anisakis simplex s. s. on human Caco-2 intestinal epithelial cells. EVs after isolation were rigorously characterized by nanoparticle tracking analysis, transmission electron microscopy, and particle-to-protein ratio assessment. E

BACKGROUND: In a previous study, we found that oral vaccination induces strong B cell responses in the stomach of Helicobacter pylori infected but not of uninfected individuals. In this study, we have evaluated the possibility of inducing gastric immune responses in H pylori infected volunteers by intestinal and gastric immunisation.
METHODS: H pylori infected subjects were given two doses of an inactivated cholera vaccine, either intestinally via an endoscope approximately 30 cm distal to the pylorus sphincter or intragastrically as small droplets applied directly onto the stomach mucosa. Un

Small-intestinal perfusion studies with a triple-lumen tube were performed in the jejunum and ileum of 11 patients with a presumptive diagnosis of pancreatic cholera syndrome (PCS). Ultimately PCS was proven to be present in only 3 patients, whereas 6 were discovered to be taking either laxatives or diuretics surreptitiously. In 2 of the 11 patients the cause of the diarrhea could not be determined. In PCS the major abnormality which we observed was that the jejunal mucosa secreted rather than absorbed when perfused with a plasma-like solution. By contrast, the ileum of the PCS patients absorb

A general platform for the safe and effective oral delivery of biologics would revolutionize the administration of protein-based drugs, improving access for patients and lowering the financial burden on the health-care industry. Because of their dimensions and physiochemical properties, nanomaterials stand as promising vehicles for navigating the complex and challenging environment in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Recent developments have led to materials that protect protein drugs from degradation and enable controlled release in the small intestine, the site of absorption for most protein

Despite the crucial function of the small intestine in nutrient uptake our understanding of the molecular events underlying the digestive function is still rudimentary. Recent studies demonstrated that enterocytes do not direct the entire dietary triacylglycerol toward immediate chylomicron synthesis. Especially after high-fat challenges, parts of the resynthesized triacylglycerol are packaged into cytosolic lipid droplets for transient storage in the endothelial layer of the small intestine. The reason for this temporary storage of triacylglycerol is not completely understood. To utilize lipi

INTRODUCTION: In chronic kidney disease (CKD), it has been suggested that alterations within the gut are associated with an inflammatory state and uremic toxicity. Studies suggest that uremia may impair the function of the intestinal barrier via the promotion of increased intestinal permeability. To understand the mechanisms that are involved in intestinal barrier damage in the setting of uremia, we evaluated the in vitro effect of uremic serum on transepithelial electrical resistance (TER), inflammation, and apoptosis in intestinal epithelial cells (T84).
METHODS: Pools of serum from healthy

Chylous ascites (CA) is a form of ascites having leakage of lipid-rich lymph into the peritoneal cavity, due to damage or obstruction in the lymphatic system. Aetiology of CA could be congenital or acquired. Primary lymphatic hypoplasia is seen commonly in children and presents with lymphoedema, chylothorax or CA. CA is initially treated conservatively with the aim to provide gut rest and decrease intestinal secretions. Surgical treatment is recommended if 1-2 months of conservative approach fails. The success of the operation depends on identifying the site of leakage of the lymphatic duct. S…

Congenital varicella syndrome (CVS) is a rare but deleterious consequence of primary varicella zoster virus (VZV) infection during pregnancy. Typical CVS stigmata are cerebral abnormalities, eye diseases and segmentally distributed, cicatricial skin lesions. In this paper the authors report on a male preterm infant, born at 30 weeks of gestation, who developed pustular skin lesions at the age of 4 weeks. The mother had suffered from chickenpox at 14 weeks of gestation. Apart from skin manifestations, critical bronchopulmonary dysplasia made the infant conspicuous. The VZV genome was detected i

INTRODUCTION: Unexpected intraoperative findings are not rare in surgical practice. Meckel's diverticulum with a mass is one such example. There are only two previously reported cases of Meckel's in transplantation, and neither involved pancreas transplant.
RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: We present a case report of novel surgical technique using a Meckel's diverticulectomy site for the duodeno-enterostomy to managing the exocrine secretions of the transplanted pancreas. We also discuss management of Meckel's diverticulum. The patient tolerated the procedure without complication, and continues to hav

BACKGROUND: Despite recent improvements, surgical complications continue to occur frequently after pancreas transplantation, remaining the leading cause of early graft loss. Small-bowel obstruction, however, is exceedingly rare; it has not been associated with an enhanced risk of graft loss.
METHODS: Intestinal obstruction occurred 7 days after pancreas transplantation due to bezoar blockage at the level of the jejunojejunostomy of the Roux-en-Y loop, which had been constructed to drain the exocrine secretions of the pancreas graft.
RESULTS: CT scan promptly identified the foreign body and g
