A Case of Rickets and Pediatric Iron Deficiency Anemia in Alabama.

A 15-month-old African American male patient presented to the pediatric clinic to establish care. The patient had been seen and treated by a previous pediatrician who had diagnosed him with failure to thrive, anemia, and hepatosplenomegaly, according to the patient's parents. Upon physical examination, the patient was determined to be less than the first percentile for height and in the eighth percentile for weight. Frontal bossing was also observed. The patient's hemoglobin level was measured in the office to help confirm the previous anemia diagnosis and was determined to be 6.3 g/dL (normal

Regulation of the iron-deficiency response by IMA/FEP peptide.

Iron (Fe) is an essential micronutrient for plant growth and development, participating in many significant biological processes including photosynthesis, respiration, and nitrogen fixation. Although abundant in the earth's crust, most Fe is oxidized and difficult for plants to absorb under aerobic and alkaline pH conditions. Plants, therefore, have evolved complex means to optimize their Fe-acquisition efficiency. In the past two decades, regulatory networks of transcription factors and ubiquitin ligases have proven to be essential for plant Fe uptake and translocation. Recent studies in Arab

Pathophysiology and management of iron deficiency anaemia in pregnancy: a review.

According to World Health Organization (WHO), iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) is considered the most prevalent nutritional deficiency worldwide, affecting approximately 30% of the global population. While gastrointestinal bleeding and menstruation in women are the primary causes of IDA, insufficient dietary iron intake and reduced iron absorption contribute to the condition. The aim of IDA treatment is to restore iron stores and normalise haemoglobin levels in affected patients. Iron plays a critical role in various cellular mechanisms, including oxygen delivery, electron transport, and enzymati

Masked polycythemia vera due to iron deficiency anemia.

A 74-year-old Japanese woman was referred to our hospital for leukocytosis that occurred for the past one year. Oral iron supplementation was started as iron deficiency anemia (IDA), but three months later, physical examination revealed flushing of the skin on her hands. Finally polycythemia vera (PV) with IDA was diagnosed. There have been reports of PV combined with IDA, which can mask diagnosis and delay treatment because of the lack of symptoms and the anemic presentation. Several possibilities for the pathogenesis of IDA associated with PV have been proposed, including the presence of Hel

Identification of women and girls with iron deficiency in the reproductive years.

Iron deficiency (ID) is the most common micronutrient deficiency in the world. It is of concern for women and girls of reproductive age as, despite frequent normalization, excessive menstrual blood loss and the iron demands associated with pregnancy increase the risk of developing an ID. Iron deficiency reduces health-related quality of life with symptoms of fatigue, heart palpitations, difficulty concentrating, and poor mental health. When left untreated, ID can escalate to iron deficiency anemia (IDA), where there is an insufficiency of red blood cells, or hemoglobin within these cells, to m

Iron Deficiency and Nephrotoxic Heavy Metals: A Dangerous Interplay?

Heavy metals are common in our environment, and all individuals are exposed to them to some extent. These toxic metals have several harmful effects on the body, including the kidney, which is a very sensitive organ. Indeed, heavy metal exposure has been linked to an increased risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and its progression, which may be explained by the well-established nephrotoxic effects of these metals. In this hypothesis and narrative literature review, we will shed light on the potential role that another highly common problem in patients with CKD, iron deficiency, may play in th

LRG1 Associates with Iron Deficiency Anemia Markers in Adolescents.

Leucine-rich α-2 glycoprotein1 (LRG1) has been shown to be associated with several health conditions; however, its association with iron deficiency anemia, especially in children, has not been previously explored. In this study, we investigated the association between LRG1 and several iron deficiency anemia markers, including hemoglobin (Hb), albumin, red cell distribution width (RDW), iron, ferritin, and Hb transferrin saturation. A total of 431 participants were included in this analysis aged between 11 and 14 years. Higher LRG1 levels were observed in children diagnosed with anemia [31.1 (2

The interplay between maternal-infant anemia and iron deficiency.

AIM: The scientific literature contains recent data on the prevalence of blindness and low vision for a few European countries, but most of these studies have been focused exclusively on the elderly sector of the populations. The purpose of the present study was to provide age-specific estimates of the prevalence and causes of visual loss in an Italian population aged 40 years and over. METHODS: In total, 847 of the 1,200 citizens >40 years of age (70.6%) in the island community of Ponza underwent complete standardized ophthalmological examinations. Visual acuity (VA) was measured using a sta

Anemia and iron deficiency in pregnant women with rheumatic diseases.

INTRODUCTION: Anemia and iron deficiency are the most common pathologies in pregnancy and associated with adverse pregnancy outcome. As patients with rheumatic diseases are also at high risk for anemia, we aimed to investigate the frequency of anemia and iron deficiency during pregnancy in this group and whether anemia is a risk factor for adverse maternal or child outcome. METHODS: We analyzed 368 pregnancies from a German registry for pregnancies in patients with rheumatic diseases (TURIRE) from 2014-2022. Anemia and iron deficiency were defined according to the World Health Organization. M

Iron Status in Sickle Cell Anemia: Deficiency or Overload?

Background Sickle cell anemia (SCA) is a hereditary disease with defective hemoglobin (Hb) synthesis causing severe hemolytic anemia, pain crisis, and target organ damage. In SCA, several factors independently or in combination lead to derangement in iron stores. Some centers incorrectly prescribe iron therapy on the presumption that SCA would be associated with iron deficiency, but it is not always the case. This study attempts to evaluate the iron status in SCA patients and records the target organ damage present. Methodology A single-center cross-sectional study of 180 patients with sickle

Iron deficiency anaemia: pathophysiology, assessment, practical management.

The WHO has recognised iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) as the most common nutritional deficiency in the world, with 30% of the population being affected with this condition. Although the most common causes of IDA are gastrointestinal bleeding and menstruation in women, decreased dietary iron and decreased iron absorption are also culpable causes. Patients with IDA should be treated with the aim of replenishing iron stores and returning the haemoglobin to a normal level. This has shown to improve quality of life, morbidity, prognosis in chronic disease and outcomes in pregnancy. Iron deficiency o

Brain-iron deficiency models of restless legs syndrome.

Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a common sensorimotor disorder for which two main pathological elements are fairly well accepted: Brain iron deficiency (BID) and an altered dopaminergic system. The ability to better understand the causal and consequential factors related to these two pathological elements, would hopefully lead to the development of better therapeutic strategies for treating, if not curing, this disease. The current understanding of the relationship between these two elements is that BID leads to some alterations in neurotransmitters and subsequent changes in the dopaminergic s

Re-defining iron deficiency in patients with heart failure.

INTRODUCTION: Iron deficiency (ID) is common in patients with chronic heart failure (CHF) and is associated with worse symptoms and prognosis regardless of whether anemia is also present. However, randomized controlled trials (RCT) of intravenous (IV) iron in patients with CHF have produced inconsistent results. This review considers the past, present, and future of defining and treating ID in patients with CHF. AREAS COVERED: The current guideline definition of ID is a serum ferritin <100 µg/L or serum ferritin 100-299 µg/L and transferrin saturation (TSAT) <20% derived from trials of IV iro

Management of Iron Deficiency in Heart Failure: A Review of Evidence.

Iron deficiency is common in patients with heart failure and has been associated with worse outcomes, including increases in mortality, disease progression, and hospitalizations. As such, several studies have evaluated the role of iron supplementation in mitigating these risks. Evidence for the role of intravenous iron in improving exercise capacity, quality of life, and hospitalizations is promising, although the benefits of oral iron remain less clear. This review will evaluate the literature surrounding iron supplementation in heart failure and provide practical recommendations for its mana

Iron deficiency anemia: Impact on women's reproductive health.

Iron deficiency (ID) and iron deficiency anemia (IDA) are highly prevalent among women across their life span, especially during the reproductive age. An iron-deficient state has been associated with a number of adverse health consequences, affecting all aspects of the physical and emotional well-being of women. Heavy menstrual bleeding, pregnancy state, and the postpartum period are the major causes of ID/IDA. However, despite the high prevalence and the impact on quality of life, ID/IDA among fertile age women remains underdiagnosed and undertreated. The present Views and Reviews provides an
