OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical outcomes of patients who underwent corneal surgery with debridement of epithelium by localised application of an alcohol-impregnated sponge instead of the usual alcohol reservoir method.
DESIGN: This study retrospectively included 52 eyes of 27 patients who underwent LASEK (laser-assisted subepithelial keratectomy) and CXL (cross-linking) surgery after application of this alcohol-assisted debridement method between January 2019 and April 2019.

BACKGROUND: Infectious keratitis after PRK remains a rare but potentially devastating complication.
HISTORY AND SIGNS: Medical records of 3 male patients with infectious keratitis after uneventful PRK for myopia and astigmatism were reviewed retrospectively. PRK was performed using the Wavelight Allegretto excimer laser. Postoperative care included a bandage contact lens (BCL) for 5 days, topical antibiotics, ketorolac, and artificial tears.

Phototherapeutic keratectomy, cataract extraction and hydrophobic acrylic lens implantation, Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy, glaucoma valve implantation, and intravitreal steroid injections resulted in substantial visual improvement in three eyes of two children with complicated cataract due to severe uveitis. At follow-up of 6 months to 4 years, the children had clear corneas and normal intraocular pressures.

We describe a variant of the big-bubble technique that involves placement of a stromal corneal nick and nontraumatic intrastromal insertion of a blunt cannula following anterior lamellar keratectomy. The goal of this technique is to reduce the risk for intraoperative corneal perforation and to obtain a large air bubble between Descemet's membrane and the corneal stroma. A 25-year-old Vietnamese man who had bilateral simultaneous laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) for moderate myopia developed bilateral Mycobacterium abscessus keratitis that was treated with intensive medical therapy, flap removal, superficial keratectomy, and, following disease progression, therapeutic deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK). To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of bilateral post-LASIK mycobacterial keratitis successfully treated with DALK.

The vernal ulcer is a peculiar corneal complication of vernal conjunctivitis. Clinically, the ulcer is oval, grey, and resistant to medical treatment. Histological study by light and electron microscopy reveal the lesion to be composed of fibrin deposits adherent to a well-preserved Bowman's membrane. These deposits impede lateral progression of the epithelium, thus, opposing spontaneous healing. Resolution of the ulcer can be obtained, however, by superficial keratectomy.

A 60-year-old man suffering from photophobia and visual disturbances was found to have bilateral superficial corneal grey-white gelatinous deposits. An abnormal cold-precipitable serum component was found and characterised as homogeneous IgG-kappa immunoglobulin. Corneal immunohistochemical examination revealed subepithelial IgG-kappa deposits, focally replacing Bowman's layer. The patient underwent superficial keratectomy in both eyes with satisfactory visual results.
