Dogs are the most popular pet animals worldwide, but on the other hand, they are main hosts of pathogens potentially transmissible to humans. The aim of this study was to assess the occurrence of intestinal parasites in free- roaming and owned dogs in an urban area in southeastern Brazil and to identify the hookworm species infecting them. Faecal samples (80 from free-roaming and 53 from owned dogs) were examined for intestinal parasites using concentration methods. DNA extracted from hookworm microscopy-positive samples were tested by PCR targeting the ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 region and the amplicons

Hookworm infection stands out for its worldwide distribution and for its veterinary and public health relevance. Based on copromicroscopic examinations and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification of the ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 region, we assessed, respectively, the prevalence of intestinal parasites and the identification of canine hookworm species in faeces recovered from 278 dogs living in households of an inland municipality of São Paulo State, Brazil. Intestinal parasites were found in 67.3% of dogs and hookworm infection was found at the highest prevalence rate (56.6%), followed by Toxocara

Egypt has been plagued by many neglected tropical diseases since Pharaonic time. These diseases are Schistosomiasis, soil-transmitted helminthiasis, lymphatic filariasis, leishmaniasis and fascioliasis beside the epidermal parasitic skin diseases. Indeed, theses diseases still persist as public health problem in the country by the influence of demographic, socioeconomic and environmental obstacles. This study seeks for understanding the contribution of each factor in each obstacle in neglected tropical diseases perpetuation which in turn could help the governorate in planning integrated contro

INTRODUCTION: The concentration of dogs and cats in urban areas, associated with an ever-increasing wandering population of these animals, has an important epidemiological role in the soil contamination of public spaces and the spread of infections of several types of parasites. This study aimed to determine the frequency of soil-transmitted helminths with zoonotic potential in public squares and municipal primary schools in Fernandópolis, State of São Paulo, Brazil, conducted between 2007 and 2008.
METHODS: All the squares (32) and schools (13) in the town were evaluated. Soil samples were t

The gastrointestinal tracts of 310 steel-trapped or hunter shot Illinois raccoons (Procyon lotor) were collected in November and December 1979 and 1980 and examined for the presence of Baylisascaris procyonis (Nematoda) in order to determine the prevalence and intensity of this ascarid and to note any differences with respect to host age and sex. The raccoons were classified as either juveniles (animals less than 1 yr old) or adults. The prevalence for all the raccoons examined was 81.9% and is the highest reported in the United States when compared to other moderate to large samples. Juvenile

Canine hookworms represent some of the most globally prevalent parasitic nematodes affecting dogs and pose a significant zoonotic risk to humans, in whom they can induce cutaneous larva migrans. Infection with these parasites may lead to blood loss, anaemia, and, in severe cases, mortality-particularly in young puppies. The present study reports a confirmed case of Ancylostoma caninum infection in a 15-month-old dog in the Slovak Republic. The infected dog presented with severe, persistent diarrhoea, and haematological examination revealed a decrease in erythrocyte and haemoglobin levels, as w

Toxocariasis in humans is considered a rare disease in Turkey, and the absence of specific symptoms of this disease is probably the main reason for clinicians to underestimate and underdiagnose the disease. Although there are several seroepidemiological studies on visceral larva migrans in the country, a comparison between them is difficult as the serological tests are not standardised. After the introduction of the easily accessible ELISA kit in the market, the number of seroepidemiological studies has increased in which the reported rates ranged between 1% and 56%. Similar to other countries

The relationship between dogs and humans is ancient and mutually beneficial. Dogs have served people well as companions, workmates, guides, and protectors. However, on occasion, dogs may injure humans through biting or may transmit pathogens resulting in a large number of problems ranging from a trivial rash to life-threatening bacteremia. Given that there are more than 80 million pet dogs in the United States, it is worth knowing the potential problems that can result from canine exposure. Annually, almost 5 million people in the United States suffer a dog bite. Dog bite wounds become infecte

BACKGROUND: Brazil will host the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games, events that are expected to attract hundreds of thousands of international travelers. Travelers to Brazil will encounter locally endemic infections as well as mass event-specific risks.
METHODS: We describe 1586 ill returned travelers who had visited Brazil and were seen at a GeoSentinel Clinic from July 1997 through May 2013.
RESULTS: The most common travel-related illnesses were dermatologic conditions (40%), diarrheal syndromes (25%), and febrile systemic illness (19%). The most common specific

Etiologic investigations of hypereosinophilia, often accompanied by IgE elevation, depends on the patient's geographic origin and travel history. In France, helminth diseases are the only parasitoses associated with hypereosinophilia. Some, such as oxyurosis in children, are frequent but generally mild. More severe but less frequent infections include distomatoses, trichinellosis, taeniasis, echinococcosis and visceral larva migrans. Among subjects originating from or having travelled to tropical areas with poor hygiene, eosinophilia may be due to early intense polyparasitism and has little et

In June 2006, 118 Singaporean soldiers visited Brunei for jungle training for 10 days. Subsequently, two soldiers had severe diarrhoea and were diagnosed with severe hookworm infection. An epidemiological investigation and case-control study was conducted among the 118 soldiers. A survey was administered to determine the exposures predisposing to infection. Laboratory tests included a full blood count and three separate faecal screens via microscopy and culture. All servicemen were treated with one dose of mebendazole, and follow-up screening was performed 3 months later. Of 113 soldiers compl

Parasitic infections, although common in tropical and subtropical regions, are prevalent worldwide because of changing immigration patterns and in international travel. The burden of worm infection is enormous and the intensity of infection is usually high among the poor and in immunocompromised individuals. Pulmonary eosinophilia occurs in almost all metazoan infections. In the Western world, the most common infections are caused by Strongyloides, Ascaris, Toxocara, and Ancylostoma species. Most of the nematodes multiply within the human host and cause pulmonary eosinophilia during larval mig

One of the fundamental aspects of a parasitic infection diagnosis is the use of adequate antigens to develop specific and sensitive immunoassays. This fact is especially complicated in nematode infection cases because of the high cross-reactivity among different parasites in this group. We performed an evaluation of Anisakis simplex antigens purified by affinity chromatography. We used sera from 38 patients diagnosed with Anisakis sensitization and sera from 35 patients with clinical suspicion of visceral larva migrans (VLM). These sera were assayed by the ELISA method against the crude extrac

Initial clinical trials in 1980 showed that ivermectin was remarkably effective against Onchocerca volvulus. Some 25 years after more than 50 million people are treated annually with Mectizan mainly within the framework of the African Programme for Onchocerciasis Control (APOC). This success has been possible thanks to Merck Mectizan Donation Program and to distribution through a novel strategy based on the strong involvement of endemic communities. In the last few years Mectizan has been used in combination with albendazole to control lymphatic filariasis on a large-scale basis in African cou

Apart from their veterinary importance, the hookworms Ancylostoma caninum, Ancylostoma braziliense and Ancylostoma caninum are also capable of causing zoonotic disease in humans. A highly sensitive and species-specific PCR-RFLP technique was utilised to detect and differentiate the various canine Ancylostoma spp directly from eggs in faeces. This technique was utilised to screen 101 canine faecal samples from parasite endemic tea growing communities in Assam, India, as part as an ongoing epidemiological investigation into canine parasitic zoonoses. The prevalence of hookworms in dogs was found

Visceral larva migrans syndrome by Toxocara affects mainly children between 2 and 5 years of age, it is generally asymptomatic, and the seroprevalence varies from 3 to 86% in different countries. A total of 399 schoolchildren from 14 public schools of the Butantã region, São Paulo city, Brazil, were evaluated by Toxocara serology (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay). Epidemiological data to the Toxocara infection obtained from a protocol were submitted to multiple logistic regression analysis for a risk profile definition. Blood was collected on filter paper by finger puncture, with all samples

Third-stage larvae were used as antigen in the diagnosis of gnathostomiasis in Western blot analysis. Normally, the larvae were obtained from digestion of eel's liver (Fluta alba) by the enzyme pepsin. We used pineapple juice (Ananus comosus) instead of enzyme pepsin in harvesting Gnathostoma spinigerum third-stage larvae. The difference in recovered larvae numbers, between pineapple juice and pepsin, were not statistically significantly different (p>0.05). The larvae from pepsin and pineapple juice digestion were cultivated on BME for 7 days; the survival rates were not significantly differen
