COPD(Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) is a cause of chronic respiratory failure which leads to pulmonary hypertension and cor pulmonale. Not only chronic hypoxia but also low QOL(quality of life) due to dyspnea are shown to affect survival of COPD patients. HOT(Home Oxygen Therapy) is one of the most successful home therapy in Japan after the availability of health insurance in 1985. HOT is the only therapy to prolong life expectancy of COPD patients with chronic respiratory failure. The induction of HOT needs a consideration of risk of narcosis and evaluations of oxygen desaturation dur

BACKGROUND: Despite the existence of formal professional support services, informal support (mainly family members) continues to be the main source of eldercare, especially for those who are dependent or disabled. Professionals on the primary health care are the ideal choice to educate, provide psychological support, and help to mobilize social resources available to the informal caregiver.Controversy remains concerning the efficiency of multiple interventions, taking a holistic approach to both the patient and caregiver, and optimum utilization of the available community resources. .For this

BACKGROUND: Huntington disease is a fatal, autosomal dominant, neurodegenerative disorder manifest by the triad of a movement disorder, behavioral disturbances, and dementia. At present, no curative or disease modifying therapies exist for the condition and current treatments are symptomatic. Palliative care is an approach to care that focuses on symptom relief, patient and caregiver support, and end of life care. There is increasing evidence of the benefit of palliative care throughout the course of neurodegenerative conditions including Parkinson disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Ho

INTRODUCTION: Osteoporosis requires long-term self-care engagement, yet little is known about how individuals experience and manage self-care in everyday life. Understanding these experiences is essential to inform tailored nursing interventions. The objective of the study was to explore and describe the experience of self-care maintenance, monitoring, and management in people with osteoporosis.
DESIGN: A qualitative descriptive study.
METHODS: We conducted semi-structured interviews. Data were analyzed using Mayring's qualitative content analysis with a deductive approach based on Riegel's

Perinatal palliative care refers to a coordinated care strategy that comprises options for obstetric and newborn care that include a focus on maximizing quality of life and comfort for newborns with a variety of conditions considered to be life-limiting in early infancy. With a dual focus on ameliorating suffering and honoring patient values, perinatal palliative care can be provided concurrently with life-prolonging treatment. The focus of this document, however, involves the provision of exclusively palliative care without intent to prolong life in the context of a life-limiting condition, o

The fourth element of chain-of-survival contains advanced life support and post-resuscitation treatment. Both treatment options influence the outcome of patients suffering cardiac arrest. Advanced life support includes all interventions that require special medical equipment and expertise. High-quality chest compressions and early defibrillation (if indicated) compose the main elements of advanced life support. Clarifying and treating the cause of cardiac arrest have also high priority, in which point-of-care ultrasound plays an important role. In addition, securing higher level of airway and

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Strabismus, an eye misalignment, impacts the functional and psychosocial health-related quality of life in adult patients. Corrective surgery generally improves adults' health-related quality of life. Previous research reports that strabismic adults with a psychosocial influence of the condition may benefit from preoperative psychosocial support, although what such support should consist of is unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to describe strabismic adults' expectations of psychosocial support from healthcare professionals.
METHODS: The study has a qualitative descript

Lymphoedema is a condition often seen in palliative patients, characterised by impaired lymphatic drainage, which leads to swelling in affected areas. In the context of end-of-life care, managing lymphoedema and its associated complications, such as lymphorrhoea and infections, is crucial for enhancing patient comfort and quality of life. This article discusses the various management strategies for lymphoedema in palliative care, including compression therapy, manual lymphatic drainage, skin care and gentle exercise. Attention is given to complications such as cellulitis and lymphorrhoea, emph

End-of-life decisions for children can be complicated by disagreements between families and health care teams. These conflicts can lead to moral distress in providers. In addition, difficulties in prognostication aggravate the problem. How teams and institutions address potential staff distress is essential to providing effective palliative care for children. Through a case study of a child with a severe life-limiting syndrome, an analysis of both the ethical and legal implications of parental and team conflict are discussed. An ethics team can help provide guidance for teams and help mediate

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Patient-reported outcomes (PROs) have become increasingly important in oncology, capturing the patient perspective on symptoms, treatment effects, and health-related quality of life. Transitioning to electronic platforms (ePROs) enables real-time monitoring, efficient integration into clinical workflows, and enhanced patient-centered care. This review explores recent evidence on the clinical utility, barriers, and future directions of integrating ePROs in supportive care in oncology.
RECENT FINDINGS: ePROs improve symptom control, quality of life, engagement, and in some st

In the face of advanced oncological disease in palliative care at home, caregivers are mostly family members who are part of the informal system. The lack of guidance and social support exposes them to stress and overload that can affect their health, well-being, quality of life, and contribute to failures in care. The aim is to understand the care networks around the main caregiver in the context of home palliative care and describe the implications of the availability of these networks on the health care of this caregiver. Descriptive and qualitative study, developed at a national reference

BACKGROUND: Vascular surgeons frequently manage critically ill patients and support complex end-of-life decision-making. Despite well-documented benefits of palliative care in serious illness, prior studies report that only 25% of patients receiving vascular surgery services near the end of life received such support. We evaluated the integration of palliative care for patients receiving vascular surgery services at the end of life, examining both utilization rates and its impact on care trajectories.
METHODS: Adult patients hospitalized at a tertiary academic medical center between January 1

The cardiovascular intensive care unit (CVICU) presents unique opportunities and challenges for integrating palliative care. A growing population of patients living longer with advanced cardiac disease, persistent symptoms, and functional limitations may benefit from early palliative involvement. With increasing use of advanced therapies such as mechanical circulatory support, many patients die in the CVICU, while survivors often experience long-term physical and psychosocial burdens. Despite evidence that early palliative care improves quality of life and reduces nonbeneficial interventions,

BACKGROUND: A growing number of older people, mainly women, live in single households. They represent a vulnerable group as staying at home may turn out challenging when care needs increase, particularly at the end of life. Non-kin-carers can play an essential role in supporting individuals' preferences to stay at home. In research little attention has been paid to non-kin-carers, such as friends and neighbors, yet. Thus, the Older People Living Alone (OPLA) study will evaluate whether non-kin support is robust enough to enable care dependent people to stay at home even at the end of life. Thi
