We discuss a case of lower lip carcinoma which presented with atypical symptoms; facial paralysis, conductive type hearing loss, and ophthalmoplegia. Due to an earlier resection, no mass was evident on the primary examination. Diagnostic imaging revealed a mass originating from the lower lip, the perineural spread of the tumor along the left inferior alveolar nerve to the left infratemporal fossa and the left foramen ovale. BACKGROUND: Macrocheilia is an inflammatory disfiguring condition responsible for the swelling of the lips. This multi-etiological entity represents a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. Published data on macrocheilia is scarce, often limited to granulomatous cheilitis.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study, including all patients presenting with chronic macrocheilia (CM) for nineteen years. CM was defined as a persistent enlargement of one or both lips for at least eight weeks. Both descriptive and analytical analyses were performed.

In this issue of the Biomedical Journal, we highlight a review revealing that the effect of autophagy, reactive oxygen species, and antioxidants in cancer may be a question of timing and context. Pediatric septorhinoplasty has been an area of controversy because early surgical intervention can prevent normal growth. There are certain conditions where early correction of the nose is indicated, such as in cleft lip nasal deformities, severe traumatic deformities, and congenital nasal lesions. Animal and clinical studies have been helpful in elucidating certain areas of the nose that are potential growth zones that should be left undisturbed when performing nasal surgeries on pediatric patients. We discuss the timing, indications, and surgical technique in pediatric septorhinoplasty.

Two cases are reported of reconstructive surgery of the upper lip in patients who had squamous cell carcinoma, using the Bürrow technique. This technique is more used in lower lips because it does not involve esthetic unity. We have opted for it in the upper lip also, using a variation in the lip commissure incision, getting a significant functional and esthetic result.

A rare glomus tumor of the lip is reported and--with nineteen glomus tumors from other sites--examined immunohistochemically with both monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies. In every case, the glomus cells showed strong reactivity with antivimentin, and factor VIII-related antigen was consistently identified in the endothelial cells but not in the glomus cells.
