Treating cognitive impairment with transcranial low level laser therapy.

This report examines the potential of low level laser therapy (LLLT) to alter brain cell function and neurometabolic pathways using red or near infrared (NIR) wavelengths transcranially for the prevention and treatment of cognitive impairment. Although laser therapy on human tissue has been used for a number of medical conditions since the late 1960s, it is only recently that several clinical studies have shown its value in raising neurometabolic energy levels that can improve cerebral hemodynamics and cognitive abilities in humans. The rationale for this approach, as indicated in this report,

Laser-assisted hair removal for facial hirsutism in women: A review of evidence.

Poly cystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) has been described as the common diagnosis for hirsutism in women. Facial hirsutism is by far the most distressing symptom of hyperandrogenism in women with PCOS. A statistically significant improvement in psychological well-being has been reported in patients with PCOS allocated for laser-assisted hair removal. The theory of selective photothermolysis has revolutionized laser hair removal in that it is effective and safe, when operated by sufficiently trained and experienced professionals. Long-pulsed ruby (694 nm), long-pulsed alexandrite (755 nm), diode (

Median canaliform nail dystrophy treated with a 1064-nm quasi-long pulsed Nd:YAG laser.

Median canaliform nail dystrophy (MCND) is an uncommon and idiopathic dystrophic change, which typically appears as central, longitudinal groove or split involving one or both thumbnails. Various treatments including a potent topical steroid, an intralesional injection of triamcinolone 2.5-3 mg/dL, medications for systemic treatment, and topical psoralen plus ultraviolet A (PUVA) have been tried to treat the disease. However, each treatment has limitations including severe pain, inconsistent treatment results, long treatment periods, and dissatisfaction with effects of treatment. In recent yea

Successful Treatment of Rhinophyma With Fractionated Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Laser in an African-American Man: Case Report and Review of Literature of Fractionated CO2 Laser Treatment of Rhinophyma.

Rhinophyma, a late complication of rosacea (phymatous subtype), is a chronic, progressive dermatological condition. The classic pre- sentation of rhinophyma is nodular, thickened skin over the distal nose, and is often accompanied by underlying erythema secondary to in ammation. Due to the unpleasant aesthetic and dis guring appearance, rhinophyma may be associated with a signi cant nega- tive psychosocial impact, resulting in decreased patient quality-of-life. Treatment of rhinophyma is challenging as topical and systemic pharmacotherapies have shown limited ef cacy. We present a case of a 39

[Low level laser therapy in inflammatory and infectious oral diseases].

PURPOSE: Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) is an increasingly studied technique. The authors of a meta-analysis published in 2012 had already confirmed the effectiveness of LLLT for radio-induced mucitis. Our purpose was to check its indication for similar pathologies. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The articles were selected with the PubMed engine. The selected terms were "Low Level Laser Therapy", "oral surgery", "oral infection", "oral inflammation", "oral mucosal lesions", "oral mucosal disease", "stomatitis", "aphtous", "Herpes", "oral lichen planus", and "oral ulceration". The analysis was made on

Trans-canal laser irradiation reduces tinnitus perception of salicylate treated rat.

The aim of this study was to find out the effect of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) on salicylate-induced tinnitus in the rat model. Fourteen Sprague-Dawley rats (8 weeks; 240-280 gm) were divided into 2 groups (study group, control group). Rats of both groups were treated with 400 mg/kg/day of sodium salicylate for 8 consecutive days. Tinnitus was monitored using GPIAS (Gap Prepulse Inhibition of Acoustic Startle) 2 h after first salicylate treatment, and every 24 h during 9 days of treatment. Rats in laser group were irradiated to each ear with wavelength of 830 nm diode laser (165 mW/cm(2))

A histological evaluation of a low-level laser therapy as an adjunct to periodontal therapy in patients with diabetes mellitus.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) and chronic periodontitis are common chronic diseases in adults in the world population. DM has a strong influence on the oral cavity and represents a risk factor for gingivitis and periodontitis. Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) has proven effective in the reduction of inflammation and swelling. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy of LLLT in diabetic periodontitis through histological analysis. A total of 300 diabetics with chronic periodontal disease and teeth indicated for extraction were assigned into six equal groups. In the groups 1 and 4, indic

Clinical effect of low-energy double-pass 1450 nm laser treatment for acne in Asians.

BACKGROUND: While the 1450 nm diode laser is highly effective for the treatment of acne, its use is associated with considerable pain. Low-energy, double-pass irradiation was attempted as an alternative to prevent the occurrence of pain as an adverse effect. PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the clinical efficacy of low-energy, double-pass, 1450 nm diode laser treatment in the treatment of acne in Asian patients. METHODS: Thirty Japanese patients with inflammatory acne were treated with the low-energy, double-pass, 1450 nm diode laser at 2-4-week intervals. An open study was performed in

Influence of laser (660 nm) on functional recovery of the sciatic nerve in rats following crushing lesion.

With the aim of accelerating the regenerative processes, the objective was to study the influence of gallium-aluminum-arsenide (GaAlAs) laser (660 nm) on functional and histomorphological recovery of the sciatic nerve in rats. The sciatic nerves of 12 Wistar rats were crushed divided into two groups: control and laser therapy. For the latter, GaAlAs laser was utilized (660 nm, 4 J/cm(2), 26.3 mW and 0.63 cm(2) beam), at three equidistant points on the lesion, for 20 days. Comparison of the sciatic functional index (SFI) showed that there was a significant difference only between the pre-lesion

Laser-needle therapy for spontaneous osteonecrosis of the knee.

OBJECTIVE: This case report describes the treatment of a 63-year-old patient with spontaneous osteonecrosis of the knee (SONK). BACKGROUND DATA: SONK usually appears in the elderly patient without the typical risk factors for osteonecrosis. It is characterized by acute and sudden pain, mostly occurring at the medial side of the knee joint. Symptoms usually worsen with physical activity and improve with rest. Besides physical therapy, limited weight-bearing and the use of analgesics and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, we propose low-level laser therapy (LLLT) as a conservative treatment

Acne and PDT: new techniques with lasers and light sources.

Acne vulgaris is one of the most common dermatologic disorders encountered in everyday practice. Treatment options for this often psychologically scarring disease are numerous and, for many individuals, provide relief from the disorder. However, factors such as antibiotic resistance and slow onset of action from many topical therapies have led researchers to seek out alternative therapies, especially for those suffering from moderate to severe inflammatory acne vulgaris. Lasers and light sources are finding increased usage in the treatment of inflammatory acne vulgaris. Light sources including

The effects of intense pulsed light (IPL) on blood vessels investigated by mathematical modeling.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Intense pulsed light (IPL) sources have been successfully used for coagulation of blood vessels in clinical practice. However, the broadband emission of IPL hampers the clinical evaluation of optimal light parameters. We describe a mathematical model in order to visualize the thermal effects of IPL on skin vessels, which was not available, so far. STUDY DESIGN/MATERIALS AND METHODS: One IPL spectrum was shifted towards the near infrared range (near IR shifted spectrum: NIRSS) and the other was heavily shifted toward the visible range (visible shifted spectrum: VSS).

Comparative study of aminolevulic acid photodynamic therapy plus pulsed dye laser versus pulsed dye laser alone in treatment of viral warts.

OBJECTIVE AND BACKGROUND: A number of scientific publications describe the removal of viral warts using photoselective laser destruction with pulsed dye laser (PDL) or photodynamic therapy (PDT). Although both methods represent an enormous improvement in therapy, the results are not sufficiently consistent to consider these methods as the "gold standard" for therapy. METHODS: With a view to further improvement we combined a photoselective dye laser (595 nm, 20 J.cm(-2)) with photodynamic therapy using aminolevulic acid. The results of this method were compared against traditional laser photod
