Biodegradable magnesium phosphates in biomedical applications.

As an essential element, magnesium is involved in a variety of physiological processes. Magnesium is the second most abundant cation in cells and the fourth most abundant cation in living organisms. Magnesium-based biomaterials are considered to be biocompatible and biodegradable, and they are promising for application in biomedicine. Among them, magnesium phosphates have attracted increasing interest in biomedical fields in recent years, because both magnesium and phosphorus are common elements in the human body. Magnesium phosphates exhibit many similar characteristics, such as excellent bio…

Degradable magnesium implants inhibit gallbladder cancer.

Gallbladder cancer can be difficult to detect in its early stages and is prone to metastasize, causing bile duct obstruction, which is usually treated by stent implantation in clinic. However, the commonly used biliary stents are non-degradable, which not only prone to secondary blockage, but also need to be removed by secondary surgery. Biodegradable magnesium (Mg) is expected to one of the promising candidates for degradable biliary stents due to its excellent physicochemical property and biocompatibility. In this work, we studied the influence of high-purity Mg wires on gallbladder cancer t…

Biodegradable magnesium alloys for orthopaedic applications.

There is increasing interest in the development of bone repair materials for biomedical applications. Magnesium (Mg)-based alloys have a natural ability to biodegrade because they corrode in aqueous media; they are thus promising materials for orthopaedic device applications in that the need for a secondary surgical operation to remove the implant can be eliminated. Notably, Mg has superior biocompatibility because Mg is found in the human body in abundance. Moreover, Mg alloys have a low elastic modulus, close to that of natural bone, which limits stress shielding. However, there are still so…

Magnesium for treating sickle cell disease.

BACKGROUND: Sickle cell disease is an autosomal recessive inherited haemoglobinopathy which causes painful vaso-occlusive crises due to sickle red blood cell dehydration. Vaso-occlusive crises are common painful events responsible for a variety of clinical complications; overall mortality is increased and life expectancy decreased compared to the general population. Experimental studies suggest that intravenous magnesium has proven to be well-tolerated in individuals hospitalised for the immediate relief of acute (sudden onset) painful crisis and has the potential to decrease the length of hos…

Does magnesium exposure affect neonatal resuscitation?

OBJECTIVE: Research on immediate neonatal resuscitation suggests that maternal magnesium exposure may be associated with increased risk of low Apgar scores, hypotonia, and neonatal intensive care unit admission. However, not all studies support these associations. Our objective was to determine whether exposure to magnesium at the time of delivery affects initial neonatal resuscitation. STUDY DESIGN: This is a secondary analysis of the Randomized Controlled Trial of Magnesium Sulfate for the Prevention of Cerebral Palsy that evaluated whether the study drug (magnesium or placebo) that was adm…

Recent developments in intestinal magnesium absorption.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Recent identification and characterization of novel Mg transporters have clarified our understanding of intestinal magnesium absorption. The predominant Mg transporters include TRPM6 and TRPM7, members of the transient receptor potential melastatin family of cation channels. Mutations of TRPM6 result in a primary disorder termed hypomagnesemia with secondary hypocalcemia. RECENT FINDINGS: Both TRPM6 and TRPM7 channels possess an atypical alpha-kinase domain. Recent studies have shown that TRPM7 channel activity is regulated by intracellular Mg and magnesium-nucleotides and …

Magnesium disturbances in critically ill patients.

Magnesium alterations can have a noticeable effect on the neuromuscular cardiovascular, and metabolic systems. With recent advances in point-of-care testing, it is now easier to monitor for changes in the serum magnesium concentration and implement therapies in the critical care setting. This article reviews the normal homeostatic mechanisms, clinical abnormalities, and therapeutic strategies for magnesium disturbances in critically ill patients.

DM-nitrophen AM is caged magnesium.

DM-nitrophen is a photolabile derivative of EDTA and therefore functions as either caged Ca(2+) or caged Mg(2+). Several papers have been published recently which use the AM ester to load intact cells with DM-nitrophen; under these conditions it is caged Mg(2+). In this commentary, I give a short history of the development and application of caged Ca(2+) probes, explaining why EGTA and BAPTA-based Ca(2+) cages are to be preferred for the photorelease of Ca(2+) under normal intracellular conditions.

Low dietary magnesium increases supraventricular ectopy.

BACKGROUND: Magnesium has been suggested to be beneficial in counteracting all phases of the processes that lead to ischemic heart disease, including terminal events such as arrhythmia and sudden death. OBJECTIVE: We tested the hypothesis that an intake of magnesium considerably below the recommended dietary allowance can produce chemical and physiologic evidence of depletion. DESIGN: Twenty-two postmenopausal women were maintained in a metabolic unit and ate a diet of conventional foods containing less than one-half of or more than the recommended dietary allowance for magnesium (320 mg/d).…
