Magnesium (Mg) is an essential nutrient for a wide array of fundamental physiological and biochemical processes in plants. It largely involves chlorophyll synthesis, production, transportation, and utilization of photoassimilates, enzyme activation, and protein synthesis. As a multifaceted result of the introduction of high-yielding fertilizer-responsive cultivars, intensive cropping without replenishment of Mg, soil acidification, and exchangeable Mg (Ex-Mg) leaching, Mg has become a limiting nutrient for optimum crop production. However, little literature is available to better understand di

Patterns of expression of TRPM7, the major cellular magnesium transporters in neurons of the hypothalamic region and hippocampus, were studied immunohistochemically. Multidirectional nature and different levels of the expression of the above antigen were revealed during modeled magnesium deficiency with regard to structural and functional features of neuron organization in the hypothalamic paraventricular and supraoptic nuclei as well as hippocampal field CA1 and CA3. Changes in the structural characteristics of neurons in the studied areas (absolute and relative indicators) and TRPM7 expressi…

The soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] chlorophyll-deficient line MinnGold is a spontaneous mutant characterized by yellow foliage. Map-based cloning and transgenic complementation revealed that the mutant phenotype is caused by a nonsynonymous nucleotide substitution in the third exon of a Mg-chelatase subunit gene (ChlI1a) on chromosome 13. This gene was selected as a candidate for a different yellow foliage mutant, T219H (Y11y11), that had been previously mapped to chromosome 13. Although the phenotypes of MinnGold and T219H are clearly distinct, sequencing of ChlI1a in T219H identified a dif

Magnesium (Mg(2+)) deficiency is common in metabolic disorders such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, and insulin resistance. These disorders are also associated with a high incidence of cancer. Mg(2+) is the regulator par excellence of metabolism, largely through its role as a cofactor for all phosphoryl transfers in the cell. Because Mg(2+) deficiency inhibits energy production it might be expected to inhibit tumor production. However, the high incidence of cancer in metabolic disorders makes that seem unlikely. In order to understand this seeming paradox, it is important to understand the regula

Magnesium (Mg) deficiency is a common nutritional disorder that is linked to an inflammatory state characterized by increased plasma acute phase protein and proinflammatory cytokine concentrations. Recent studies have shown that changes in the composition of gut microbiota composition participate in systemic inflammation. In this study, therefore, we assessed the potential role of gut microbiota in intestinal and systemic inflammation associated with Mg deficiency in mice. For this purpose, mice were fed a control or Mg-deficient diet (500 mg vs. 70 mg Mg/kg) for 4 or 21 d. Compared with the m

The aims of this study were to estimate of psychomotor activity, emotional status and magnesium (Mg) content in blood of rats fed with Mg-deficient diet for 49 days; and to find out whether the combination of vitamin B6 with Mg will reveal antidepressant- and anxiolytic-like activity and reduce the length of the treatment needed to recover rats from Mg-deficient condition. To induce hypomagnesemia, seventy-nine rats were placed on a Mg-deficient diet (Mg content < or = 15 mg/kg) and demineralized water for 7 weeks. Eight control rats were fed a basal control diet. On the forty-ninth day of Mg-

BACKGROUND: Measurement of magnesium (Mg) status is problematic because tissue Mg deficiency can be present without low serum Mg concentrations.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate a modified version of the Mg retention test using stable isotopes for the assessment of Mg status in general, and the detection of marginal Mg deficiency in particular.
DESIGN: A modified version of the Mg retention test using a small dose of (26)Mg was evaluated for assessment of Mg status in 22 healthy subjects. Muscle Mg concentration was used as reference for Mg status. A muscle biopsy was taken from the lateral portion of

Hypomagnesemia, which is frequently observed in patients treated with calcineurin inhibitors to prevent rejection after allogeneic transplantation, has been associated with a faster rate of decline in allograft function. The effect of hypomagnesemia on lung allograft has not been reported yet. In our model of isolated mouse lung, we have evaluated the early effects of allogeneic lung perfusion with blood from magnesium (Mg)-deficient mice for 3 h on lung activation and remodelling, compared to isogeneic perfusion. Hypomagnesemia (0.21+/-0.07 mmol Mg(2+)/l) was observed in blood from Mg-deficie

The parkinsonism-dementia complex (PDC) and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) were the fatal neurological diseases, showing very high incidence during 1950-1970 and dramatic decrease after 1970 on Guam. Through the research, the present author insisted that; (1) NFTs in Guam ALS patients are merely a background feature widely dispersed in the population, (2) Guam ALS and PDC are basically different diseases, and (3) Guam ALS occurs initially as classic ALS. As pathogeneses of the diseases, intake of low calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) and high aluminum water and of some plant excitatory neur

Magnesium deficiency has been shown to increase nitric oxide (NO) levels in plasma and to aggravate endotoxin lethality. The present study was performed to examine the effects of magnesium (Mg(2+))-deficient culture medium, with and without endotoxin (LPS), on NO release and inducible NOS (iNOS) mRNA levels in alveolar macrophages isolated from rats. Decreasing the Mg(2+) concentration in the culture medium from 0.39 mM (normal-Mg(2+) medium) to 0.021 mM (Mg(2+)-deficient medium) increased NO release from alveolar macrophages for 2 h. However, LPS stimulation in Mg(2+)-deficient medium had lit…

The importance of the inflammatory process in the pathology of experimental Mg-deficiency has been reconsidered but the sequence of events leading to inflammatory response remains unclear. In this study, the effect of Mg-deficiency on complement system by measuring total C3 concentration, mRNA abundance for rat pre-pro complement C3 in liver by RT-PCR, complement haemolytic activity and C3 activation by Western Blot was studied. Weaning male Wistar rats were fed either Mg-deficient or control experimental diets for 2 or 8 days. At 8 days, a characteristic inflammatory response of Mg-deficiency

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of dietary Mg deficiency (80 mg/kg versus control diet: 960 mg/kg) on blood pressure and mechanical properties of the rat common carotid artery. The internal diameter and intra-arterial pressure of carotid artery were measured continuously with an echo-tracking device. At 19 weeks, systolic, diastolic, and mean blood pressures were higher in Mg-deficient rats. Histological examination showed an increase in cross-sectional area, intima-media thickness, and media-to-lumen ratio in carotid artery of Mg-deficient rats. Mg deficiency did not mod

Magnesium (Mg) intake has been linked to bone mass and/or rate of bone loss in humans. Experimental Mg deficiency in animal models has resulted in impaired bone growth, osteopenia, and increased skeletal fragility. In order to assess changes in bone and mineral homeostasis that may be responsible, we induced dietary Mg deficiency in adult Simonsen albino rats for 16 weeks. Rats were fed either a low Mg diet (0.002 percent) or a normal control Mg diet (0.063 percent). Blood was obtained at baseline, 4 weeks, 8 weeks, 12 weeks and 16 weeks in both groups for serum Mg, calcium, PTH, and 1.25(OH)2

Magnesium deficiency has been shown to produce vascular lesions in experimental animals, but the underlying mechanisms of vascular injury are not clear. It has been reported that in rodents, magnesium deficiency enhances circulating levels of factors that promote free radical generation and are mitogenic. In pursuance of these observations, the present study tested the hypothesis that magnesium deficiency may enhance oxidative stress and trigger an accelerated growth response in vivo in the aorta of rats. Oxidative stress was evaluated in terms of levels of thiobarbituric acid-reactive substan…

To investigate the manganese status in magnesium deficiency, 40 male Wistar rats, 3 wk old, were divided into two groups and fed a magnesium deficient diet or a normal synthetic diet for 2 wk. Dietary magnesium depletion decreased magnesium levels in brain, spinal cord, lung, spleen, kidney, testis, bone, blood, and plasma, while it elevated the magnesium level in liver. In magnesium-depleted rats, calcium concentration was increased in lung, liver, spleen, kidney, and testis, while it was decreased in tibia. In magnesium-depleted rats, manganese concentration was decreased in plasma and all t…

We investigated the effects of fructooligosaccharides (FO)-feeding on the absorption of iron (Fe), calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) and on the biochemical parameters in Fe-deficient anemic rats. Fe-deficient anemic rats were made by feeding an Fe-deficient diet for 3 weeks. Then these Fe-deficient rats were fed an experimental diet that contained one of two levels of Fe (15 or 30 mg/kg diet), in the form of ferric pyrophosphate, and one of two levels of FO (0 or 50 g/kg diet) for 2 weeks. After the rats were fed these experimental diets, FO-feeding increased the hematocrit ratio, the concentrat

Both short- and long-term effects of Mg deficiency on carbohydrate metabolism were investigated in 6-year-old clonal Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) trees cultivated in sand culture with an optimal supply of nutrients, except for Mg which was supplied at 0.203, 0.041 and 0.005 mM to provide optimal, moderately deficient and severely deficient Mg supply, respectively. Annual changes in carbohydrate concentrations (starch, sucrose, glucose and fructose) were analyzed and diurnal changes were investigated on a single day during the summer. Older needles of trees in the moderate Mg-deficie

We describe a patient with the eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome (EMS) with persistent myalgias, cramping, and weakness that were not responsive to treatment. Despite a normal serum magnesium level, a loading study was performed, and the results suggested low tissue levels of magnesium. He was given parenteral magnesium and had dramatic improvement in symptoms as well as in muscle intracellular levels of this cation. After cessation of magnesium therapy the symptoms recurred, and magnesium repletion again led to an improvement in symptoms and ATP levels. Low tissue levels of magnesium, even in the

Vascular tissues of needles and twigs of Norway spruce with low foliar magnesium concentrations were examined by light microscopy. Observations were made on samples from (1) apparently healthy trees, (2) trees exhibiting progressive symptoms of decline, including the yellowing and fall of needles and the death of twigs and branches in the subapical canopy, and (3) trees recovering from symptoms of decline after fertilization with magnesium sulfate. Abnormalities in cambium and phloem anatomy, which were apparent in 2-year-old needles of declining trees, were seen only in needles at least 4 yea

The effect of a moderate magnesium (Mg) deficiency on coronary arteries of 61 swine, fed various levels of vitamin D3, was studied by light and electron microscopy. The effect of subnormal Mg intake on vitamin D3-induced intimal lesions of the arteries showed a trend towards increased damage. The degree of cell degeneration and intimal thickening, which was induced by high vitamin D intakes, was as great in swine whose diet was low in Mg and moderately high in vitamin D as it was in those on twice as much vitamin D. Also, the degree of arterial calcification was intensified by inadequate Mg in
