Odontogenic myxoma is a locally aggressive, uncommon benign tumour which arises from mesenchymal tissues normally present in developing teeth. The most frequent locations of odontogenic myxoma are the posterior regions of the mandible, as well as the condylar region. Since odontogenic myxomas are not associated with any specific clinical or radiological sign, a histopathological examination of the specimen is required for confirmation of the primary diagnosis. We report three cases of myxoma diagnosed during the last 18 years. Two of them were located in atypical regions of the mandible and on

We present a rare manifestation of a chronic mandibular wound with a traumatic diathesis. A 38-year-old male patient sought medical consultation because of painless swelling in the mandibular symphysis and mild paresthesia of the lower lip. He mentioned a history of physical trauma to the mandibular symphysis 12 months ago. The radiographic evaluation and CT scan showed gross destruction of bone leading to a well-defined radiolucent lesion without any sclerosing margins. The histological examination revealed numerous spindle-shaped fibroblasts arranged in a fascicular pattern and scattered mul

A female child was investigated for insidious onset of temporomandibular joint dysfunction and trismus in the setting of a mandibular myofibroma. Myofibromas, benign mesenchymal neoplasms composed of spindle cells, are rarely found in the oral cavity, most commonly in the mandible. These lesions are historically described as indolent with a high cure rate and minimal recurrence rates following surgical resection. The patient initially presented with concerns regarding snoring, retrognathia, and jaw ankylosis, as well as a history of trouble latching as an infant but without obvious physical de

OBJECTIVE: Driver oncogenic mutations have been reported in several benign neoplasms. While ameloblastomas show BRAF p.V600E mutations, adenomatoid odontogenic tumours harbour either KRAS p.G12R or p.G12 V. The lack of understanding of the core molecular changes involved in tumour initiation and progression represents a critical barrier to developing new strategies for cancer detection and prevention. Considering the fact that ameloblastoma and adenomatoid odontogenic tumours can originate from dental follicles, we hypothesized that the BRAF and KRAS mutations might be early events in odontoge

BACKGROUND: Schwannomas are benign, slow-growing neoplasms of the myelin-producing Schwann cells of peripheral nervous system that most commonly affect sensory nerves. Hypoglossal schwannomas, tumors of purely motor nerves, comprise <5% of all head and neck schwannomas. Since the first description of a hypoglossal schwannoma in 1933, there have been few case reports of extracranial origins. The most common location of an extracranial hypoglossal schwannoma is in the parapharyngeal space and can mimic paragangliomas. We describe the case of a woman presenting with an enlarging neck mass origina

BACKGROUND: Ossifying fibromyxoid tumors (OFTs) are uncommon soft tissue neoplasms. Only one case arising in the gingiva has been described.
METHODS: A 21-year-old woman presented with a painless exophytic mass located in the right posterior mandibular gingiva, which was identified 6 months earlier. Radiographs showed irregular calcifications inside the lesion, discrete irregularity of alveolar bone, and integrity of buccal and lingual cortical bone. An incisional biopsy was performed based on the clinical diagnostic hypothesis of peripheral ossifying fibroma or peripheral giant cell granulom

INTRODUCTION: Central giant cell granulomas (CGCGs) are benign but locally aggressive rare neoplasms that affect the bony skeleton, particularly the maxillofacial region. The purpose of this European multicenter study was to describe and assess the characteristics, diagnosis, management, and recurrence of CGCGs at different European oral and maxillofacial surgery centers.
METHODS: The data from all the treated CGCGs from the involved oral and maxillofacial surgical units across Europe between January 1st, 2014 and December 31st, 2023 were recorded.
RESULTS: A total of 76 patients, including

Actinomycosis is a rare, chronic suppurative infection caused by filamentous, Gram-positive anaerobic bacteria, primarily Actinomyces israelii, with cervicofacial involvement being the most common presentation. Periapical actinomycosis, a rare central subtype of cervicofacial actinomycosis accounting for approximately 1-2% of central cases, is characterized by an indolent, less invasive course. This case report describes an unusual presentation of mandibular periapical actinomycosis in a 26-year-old immunocompetent female with no history of trauma or predisposing comorbidities. The patient pre

On the basis of superior outcomes from electrochemogene therapy (ECGT) compared with electrochemotherapy in mice, we determined the efficacy of ECGT applied to spontaneous canine neoplasms. Intralesional bleomycin and feline interleukin-12 DNA (fIL-12 DNA) injection combined with translesional electroporation resulted in complete cure of two recurrent World Health Organization stage T(2b)N(0)M(0) oral squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) and one T(2)N(0)M(0) acanthomatous ameloblastoma. Three remaining dogs, which had no other treatment options, had partial responses to ECGT; one had mandibular T(3

Osteolipoma is an extremely rare histological variant of lipoma characterized by the presence of mature adipose tissue admixed with well-formed lamellar bone. Its occurrence in the oral cavity is exceptional, often posing a diagnostic challenge due to its nonspecific clinical and radiographic features. We report a rare case of osteolipoma in a 40-year-old male who presented with a slow-growing, painless swelling on the right side of the mandible of six months' duration. Clinical examination revealed a firm, mobile, non-tender mass causing facial asymmetry and intraoral vestibular obliteration.

Neurofibroma is a benign neoplasm derived from peripheral nerves whose etiology is still unclear. It may present as a solitary lesion or be associated with other diseases such as neurofibromatosis type I and II syndrome. This paper aims to report an extremely rare case of a solitary giant neurofibroma of the mental nerve whose etiology was related to a local trauma. A 14-year-old female patient presented an extensive left facial mass with a size of 7 × 5 × 4 cm, located between the teeth 33 and 37 in the mandible region. It has begun to grow 3 months after a local trauma. Imaging studies were

BACKGROUND: Primary malignant melanoma of the parotid gland (PMMPG) is an exceedingly rare neoplasm, accounting for < 0.7% of all parotid malignancies. Differentiating it from metastatic melanoma to the parotid is clinically critical but diagnostically challenging.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 62-year-old Chinese man presented with a 6-month history of a painless, enlarging left parotid mass. Extensive physical examination and imaging (CT and MRI) of the head, neck, and chest revealed no extraparotid primary lesion. Core needle biopsy and immunohistochemistry (S100+, HMB45+, MelanA+, Ki-67 ~ 50%) con

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a slowly growing malignant neoplasm with a propensity for perineural invasion. Microscopic invasion of ACC often prevents its detection on computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). We herein report a rare case of sublingual ACC presenting as a "skip lesion" that rapidly infiltrated the mandible after tumor resection. A 64-year-old man presented to Okayama University Hospital with an 18-month history of swelling in the right floor of the mouth. Clinical examination displayed an ulcerated swollen mass in that region. An enhanced mass was dete

Melanotic Neuroectodermal Tumor of Infancy (MNTI) is a rare, locally aggressive neoplasm with a predilection for the head and neck area, most commonly occurring in the maxilla. The vast majority of treatment modalities for all cases of MNTI to date have involved surgical intervention only, with just 9.6 % involving some sort of chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or a combination of the prior mentioned modalities. There is very limited information available regarding the use of neoadjuvant chemotherapy, due to its rare nature. In this report, a 4 month old girl presented to our clinic with a chief com

BACKGROUND: Nerve sheath myxoma (NSM) is an extremely rare benign neoplasm in the oral cavity. This paper describes the first case, to our knowledge, of NSM in the gingival mucosa of an 84-year-old female patient.
METHODS: Intraoral examination revealed a painless and well-defined nodule in the lingual gingival mucosa of the right mandibular lateral incisor, which measured approximately 1.0 cm in diameter. The lesion was fully excised under local anesthesia, without intercurrences. Hematoxylin and eosin staining was performed in 5-microm sections for histopathologic analysis. Immunohistochemi

OBJECTIVE: Microvascular free-tissue transfer to the head and neck has become an accepted method of reconstruction owing to increased success rates and superior aesthetic and functional results. Although the large number of arteries and veins in the neck make free-flap revascularization easier than in other recipient sites of the body, there are also unique problems that pose significant risks to the success of the procedure. We report our experience with 200 microvascular free flaps performed between 1987 and 1992.
SETTING: This study was conducted at a tertiary referral center.
