This investigation was conducted to evaluate 20 cases of implant-retained prosthetic rehabilitation (mean follow-up of 35 months). Ear, nose, orbit and complex defects of the face have been restored. BACKGROUND: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a very common disorder among adults: the prevalence of mild OSA is 20%, and that of moderate or severe OSA is 6% to 7%. Simple snoring is even more common. Conservative treatments such as nocturnal ventilation therapy and oral appliances are successful as long as the patient actually uses them, but they do not eliminate the underlying obstruction of the upper airway.

CASE REPORT: A 70-year-old man who was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma of the left lower gingiva underwent segmental mandibulectomy for tumor ablation and reconstruction with a scapular bone flap. To augment bone height of this flap, vertical distraction osteogenesis was performed. After denture fabrication, a removable lip support was placed between the implant-supported denture and the lower lip.

The role of a hospital-based implant center with dental and medical specialists working as a team is discussed. Advantages to the team include the availability of sophisticated hospital equipment and facilities. Referring dentists are encouraged to participate in and/or observe treatment performed at the implant center. Four cases treated by an implant team within a hospital environment are presented.
