Impact of Mobile Health (mHealth) Use by Community Health Workers on the Utilization of Maternity Care in Rural Malawi: A Time Series Analysis.

PURPOSE: Maternal mortality in Malawi is high, with low coverage of maternity care being a contributing factor. To improve maternal health coverage, an Android-based, integrated mobile health (mHealth) app called YendaNafe was introduced to community health workers (CHWs) in the Neno district, rural Malawi. This study evaluates the impact of this app on the uptake of antenatal care (ANC), facility-based births, and postnatal care (PNC), compared to a reference period where CHWs provided the same services without mHealth, using the interrupted time series analysis. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Using …

Associations of Maternal-Infant Bonding with Maternal Mental Health, Infant's Characteristics and Socio-Demographical Variables in the Early Postpartum Period: A Cross-Sectional Study.

(1) Background: There is a continuing discussion concerning the impact of preterm birth on Maternal-Infant bonding with inconsistent results. The large burden of preterm births calls for research to evaluate the impact of it on material psychological outcome in the early postpartum period. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between maternal postpartum bonding with maternal mental health, socio-demographical factors, and child's characteristics. (2) Methods: A cross-sectional study design was used. In total, 72 women (a mean age of 31.44 years old) of preterm infants (

Artificial intelligence and the future of maternal and newborn health in low-income countries: advancing equity, early detection, and health system resilience.

Maternal and newborn mortality remain major public health challenges in low-income countries, where poverty, health workforce shortages, limited access to quality care, and weak health systems contribute to preventable deaths and adverse outcomes. Artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a promising tool for strengthening maternal and newborn health through improved risk prediction, early diagnosis, clinical decision support, and health system planning. This narrative review examines the potential of AI to advance equity, enhance early detection of complications, and improve health system r

The fiscal sustainability of Burkina Faso's free health care policy for maternal and child health: an analysis using the fiscal space diamond.

BACKGROUND: In April 2016, Burkina Faso implemented a free maternal and child health care program. Program monitoring after the policy’s introduction showed increased stock-outs of essential drugs and supplies. The program’s outcomes could differ from those expected if financing and resources were insufficient. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the program’s fiscal sustainability by examining ways to finance its implementation effectively. METHODS: A slightly modified four-dimension definition of fiscal space was used to examine whether Burkina Faso had sufficient financial capacity to suppor

Design and content of health facility routine data recording and reporting forms for maternal, newborn, and child health: a scoping review of literature.

BACKGROUND: High-quality routine health information systems (RHIS) are critical for improving maternal, newborn, and child health (MNCH), to facilitate clinical decision-making and track service delivery. Despite widespread use of health facility data forms for capturing indicators, there are no evidence-based standardized formats or content guidelines for MNCH. The aim of this scoping review was to identify, synthesize, and explore literature related to health facility data forms regarding data-element content, design, and format. METHODS: Following Arksey and O'Malley's scoping review metho

Are women with disabilities less likely to utilize essential maternal and reproductive health services?-A secondary analysis of Pakistan Demographic Health Survey.

BACKGROUND: People with disabilities deal with widespread exclusion from healthcare services, including sexual and reproductive health (SRH) rights. Studies analyzing the relationship between disability and key SRH utilization outcomes have often reported mixed findings. In Pakistan, very little to no literature is available on this topic, therefore we aim to determine inequalities in the utilization of essential maternal and reproductive health services between women with and without disabilities in Pakistan. METHODS: This was a secondary analysis of Pakistan Demographic Health Survey 2017-1

Metabolic Imprinting and Intergenerational Cardiometabolic Risk in Human Populations: Implications for Preconception and Maternal Health.

The global rise in obesity and type 2 diabetes has been too rapid to be explained by genetic change alone, which points to developmental and environmental contributions to cardiometabolic risk. Metabolic conditions during sensitive windows, particularly preconception, pregnancy, and early postnatal life, appear to shape long-term metabolic regulation and disease susceptibility. In this narrative review, we synthesise human cohort studies, natural experiments, and experimental models, and we translate the resulting evidence into clinical and public health practice. Across human cohorts, materna

Liquid Crystal Monomers and Their Perturbations in Transplacental Transfer: Potential Impacts on Maternal-Offspring Health.

Liquid crystal monomers (LCMs), essential components of electronic displays, have been found in environmental and human samples due to their noncovalent integration and extensive use. Global liquid crystal display (LCD) panel production rose from 192 million m2 in 2017 to 450 million m2 by 2025, driving a greater environmental release of LCMs. Although LCMs exhibit endocrine-disrupting potential, information regarding their transplacental transfer and impacts on the reproduction and development remains largely unknown. Here, we compile the measured LCM concentrations in various maternal and fe

John William Ballantyne: A pioneer who forged the future of maternal, fetal and child health.

At the beginning of the 20th century, childbirth was attended to naturally without the aid of a hospital or a midwife and the responsibility of delivering the child fell to the eldest in the family. Key figures like Sir James Young Simpson (1811-1870) and John William Ballantyne (1861-1923) in Edinburgh during the first quarter of the 20 th century played crucial roles in advancing maternal and perinatal care. Ballantyne took a particular interest in both the physiology and pathology of pregnancy. His interest extended from prematernity care to beyond intrauterine life to matters related to th

Weaning as an emotional transition in maternal mental health: A call for greater sensitive and inclusive care.

Weaning is commonly understood as a practical transition, yet it carries significant emotional implications that remain largely absent from maternal mental health discussions. Drawing on existing literature and clinical observations, this editorial explores the psychological dimensions of weaning, including guilt, sadness, relief, confusion, and emotional disconnection. The lack of professional visibility of this transition may invalidate maternal emotional experiences, potentially impacting mental health. Recognizing weaning as a meaningful emotional and developmental moment can foster more e
