Volumetric CBCT analysis of the palatine process of the anterior maxilla: a potential source for bone grafts.

The aim of this research was to use cone-beam computerized tomography (CBCT) to analyze the available bone volume in the palatine process of the maxilla (PPM), which is a potential source of bone grafts. 20 CBCT scans were evaluated. From the most caudal axial slice of the PPM, the bony surface was calculated cranially up to the nasal floor. The predetermined thickness of each slice was 0.9 mm. A 2 mm safety margin was established considering the incisive canal and teeth 14-24. A ± 0.1 mm error deviation was established for all calculations. By connecting these points and those defined at the …

A clinical and histological comparison of two different bone augmentation materials in the atrophic pre-maxilla.

This case study was conducted to compare the regenerative potential of bovine xenograft versus demineralized freeze-dried bone allograft in … superiority of one of the two graft materials over the other in reconstructing a severely atrophied maxilla. Both sites ultimately required a second guided bone regeneration (GBR) procedure prior to implant placement. It was speculated that adequate space maintenance might not have been achieved during the initial procedures.

Actinomycosis of the maxilla - a case report of a rare oral infection presenting in general dental practice.

Actinomycosis is a suppurative and often chronic bacterial infection most commonly caused by Actinomyces israelii. It is rare in dental practice. In the case reported the patient presented to his general dental practitioner complaining of a loose upper denture. This was found to be due to an actinomycotic infection which had caused extensive destruction and sequestration of the maxillary and nasal bones and subsequent deviation of the nasal septum.

Extensive central ossifying fibroma of the maxilla: a case report with description of an alternative surgical technique.

Central ossifying fibroma (COF) is a fibrous-osseous lesion containing fibrous tissue and varying amounts of calcified tissue. Although the lesion is preferentially located in the jaws, it may be found elsewhere. It usually affects patients during their third and fourth decades of life, with a female predilection. The mandibular premolar-molar area is the most common site. Radiographically, COF may present a radiolucent, radiopaque or a mixed appearance. This article reports a case of an extensive COF in the maxilla of a 62-year-old patient. Intraoral examination revealed a swelling with undef…

Transmaxillary osteogenesis distraction combined with orthopedics and orthodontics in the correction of a severe retrusion of the upper maxilla.

A patient having adequate records and diagnosed as having Binder syndrome is presented. Nasomaxillary hypoplasia requires a definitive treatment, use of bone grafts, upper maxillary osteotomies, and advancement or a combination of both. Bone grafts can be reabsorbed, and complete maxillary advance modifies normal occlusion in a certain way, because the posterior sector is not compromised. The aim of this case treatment is to create a new osseous surface that makes the eruption of the permanent dental pieces easier and gives the correct skeletal position to the upper maxilla with distraction os…

Mandibular bone graft in the anterior maxilla for single-tooth implants. Presentation of surgical method.

Nine patients with 10 implants were included in the study. A bone graft from the symphyseal region of the mandible was used to augment the ridge 4 months before implant insertion. All implant sites showed a sufficient amount of bone at the time of implant insertion. One implant was not integrated at the time of abutment connection. Bone resorption after augmentation was assessed by measurements of the width of the alveolar ridge at four different levels. The measurements were performed before and after the bone-grafting procedure, at implant insertion and at abutment connection. The bone resor

A histochemical study of the development of premaxilla and maxilla during secondary palate formation in the mouse embryo.

The development of premaxilla and maxilla in the mouse fetus during secondary palate formation from the 12th to the 16th days of gestation was histochemically assessed. To determine the developmental stages, a classification based on the morphogenesis of the limbs, or the "limb score" (LS) was employed. The stage of LS coincided with the gestational age from the 13th to the 15th days. Early on the 12th day, alkaline phosphatase (ALPase) activity was intense in the mesenchyme lateral to the incisor tooth bud and latero-inferior to the inferior orbital nerve. Subsequently, osteoblasts differenti…

Radiographic localization of unerupted teeth in the anterior part of the maxilla: a survey of methods currently employed.

The radiographic prescribing habits of consultants in orthodontics and oral surgery are described with specific reference to assessment of unerupted maxillary canine teeth. Orthodontists use more radiographs than oral surgeons under these circumstances. The relative radiation for commonly used combinations of radiographs has been summarized and recommendations made regarding the use of certain of these.

Papilla-Preserving Gingival Fiber Retention Osseous Surgery in the Anterior Maxilla: A Novel Clinical Technique.

OBJECTIVE: To describe papilla-preserving gingival fiber retention osseous surgery (PP-FibReOS), a biologically driven resective approach intended to eliminate periodontal pockets while maintaining interproximal connective tissue and papillary stability in esthetically demanding maxillary anterior sites. CLINICAL TECHNIQUE: PP-FibReOS was implemented in two challenging anterior maxillary scenarios: functional crown lengthening and surgical pocket elimination in a stage IV, grade C periodontitis case. The key feature of this protocol uses a split-full-split buccal flap with selective coronal t…

Bone Quality in Resorbed Posterior Maxilla Affects Osteogenesis After Sinus Floor Augmentation: A Retrospective Analysis.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Compromised bone quality and quantity in the posterior maxilla are widely recognised as significant risk factors for implant failures. This study aimed to (1) assess the bone quality of the resorbed posterior maxilla both radiographically and histologically and (2) evaluate the impact of native alveolar bone quality on osteogenesis following maxillary sinus floor augmentation (MSFA). METHODS: Patients presenting advanced posterior maxillary atrophy (residual bone height ≤ 4 mm) underwent MSFA via a lateral window approach using deproteinised bovine bone matrix (DBBM). B…

Clinical outcomes of maxillary sinus augmentation in atrophied posterior maxilla based on residual bone height.

BACKGROUND: The posterior maxilla is often the site of early tooth loss, frequently requiring sinus augmentation to compensate for vertical bone deficiency. However, the influence of residual bone height (RBH) on clinical outcomes remains unclear. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study evaluated 42 patients who underwent maxillary sinus augmentation using either the lateral or transcrestal approach. Patients were divided into two groups: the severely atrophied group (RBH < 3 mm) and the moderately atrophied group (RBH 3-5 mm). Clinical outcomes assessed included marginal bone loss (M…
