[Diagnostic value of osteotropic bone scintigraphy in maxillary sinus diseases].

The authors described the application of facial bone scintigraphy in 6 patients with acute and 47 patients with chronic sinusitis, 4 patients with cyst of maxillary sinus, 4 patients with sinus maxillary neoplasm and 4 patients with pyocele of frontal sinus. Facial bone scintigraphy was performed by gamma-camera Siemens Gammasonics ZLC-750 after intravenous administration of 15 mCi of 99mTcMDP in anteroposterior projection. The index of accumulation of the tracer (JAT) in maxillary sinus region was counted separately in men and in women in the reference group. In patients with purulent sinusit

Incidence of Sinusitis Postoperatively in Orthognathic Surgery: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Maxillary osteotomies as a component of orthognathic surgery disrupt the normal anatomy and function of the sinus. The osteotomy with advancement of the inferior component of the sinus leaves a bony and mucosal opening in the sinus. Immediately after surgery, nasal drainage is impeded because of intranasal swelling. Acute and chronic maxillary sinusitis would be expected; however, its incidence as an expected complication is not well documented. A systematic review and meta-analysis was completed using PubMed to determine the incidence of sinusitis after maxillary orthognathic surgery. Studies…

Dentigerous cyst associated with an ectopic third molar in the maxillary sinus: a rare entity.

Ectopic eruption of teeth into a region other than the oral cavity is rare although there have been reports of teeth in the nasal septum, mandibular condyle, coronoid process, palate, chin and maxillary sinus. Occasionally, a tooth may erupt in the maxillary sinus and present with local sinonasal symptoms attributed to chronic sinusitis. We present a case of an ectopic maxillary third molar tooth that caused chronic purulent sinusitis in relation to the right maxillary sinus.

Brain abscess following dental implant placement via crestal sinus lift - a case report.

PURPOSE: To describe a rare case of odontogenic brain abscess. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A healthy, 35-year-old male had two dental implants placed in a simultaneously augmented maxillary sinus. One implant failed and the patient developed a maxillary sinusitis that failed to improve following antibiotic treatment at home. The neglected sinus infection led to formation of a brain abscess. The patient was hospitalised only when he had pan sinusitis with neurological signs. Symptoms were headache attacks, a subfebrile fever and a purulent secretion from the left nostril. The osteomeatal complex wa…

Effects of surgery on the function of maxillary sinus mucosa.

For chronic maxillary sinusitis, the most popular surgical approach for treatment is endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS). After these operations, however, it is not clear how well the surgery restores the normal mucociliary function. We examined the mucociliary clearance (MCC) in maxillary sinuses in chronic sinusitis before ESS and 6 months after the operations. The correlation of histology to MCC was also studied. Measurements of the mean residual mucociliary clearance (MCC) of maxillary sinuses was studied pre- and postoperatively with an isotope method. Biopsies taken during ESS and 6 months po…

Implant-guided volumetric analysis of edentulous maxillary bone with cone-beam computerized tomography scan. Maxillary sinus pneumatization classification.

The primary goal of this anatomic study was to measure the average bone volume of the edentulous maxilla with a cone-beam computerized tomography (CBCT) scan and to determine its suitability for implant treatment without additional bone grafting. The secondary goal of the study was to estimate the degree of sinus pneumatization (SP) in reviewed CBCT scans, assess the sinus-to-maxillary bone interrelationship in edentulism, and attempt to classify maxillary sinuses based on the degree of their pneumatization. This retrospective radiographic quantitative study consisted of the analysis of CBCT s

Silent sinus syndrome secondary to a radix relicta in the antrum.

The case of a 57-year-old man with a radix relicta in the maxillary sinus causing a chronic maxillary sinusitis with secondary alteration of orbit and maxillary sinus, compatible with the silent sinus syndrome, is presented. The patient was treated with intranasal antrostomy in which the underlying dental cause of the inflammation was also removed. Initial antrostomy of the affected maxillary sinus may be a good therapy for unilateral enophthalmos with underlying chronic sinusitis, which can lead to spontaneous reduction or even resolution of the enophthalmos.

Association between maxillary sinus pathologies and healthy teeth.

INTRODUCTION: The proximity of the roots to the maxillary sinus can create a variety of risks. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the relationship between the roots of healthy teeth and the maxillary sinus, as well as the occurrence of sinus pathologies. METHODS: Three radiologists analyzed 109 cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images. The Kappa test was used to assess the intra- and inter-rater agreement. The chi-squared test and prevalence ratio were used to test the hypothesis that roots of healthy teeth in the maxillary sinus favored the occurrence of sinus pathologies (p=0.01). RESULTS: Intra-
