Does epilepsy differentially affect different types of memory?

Despite the recognition that epilepsy can substantially disrupt memory, there are few published accounts of whether and how this disruption varies across different types of memory and/or different types of epilepsy. This review explores four main questions: (1) Are working, episodic and semantic memory differentially affected by epilepsy? (2) Do various types of epilepsy, and their treatment, have different, specifiable effects on memory? (3) Are the usual forms of neuropsychological assessments of memory - many or most designed for other conditions - appropriate for patients with epilepsy? (4

Attention network dysfunction underlies memory impairment in posterior cortical atrophy.

Accumulating evidence suggests that memory is impaired in posterior cortical atrophy (PCA), alongside the early and defining visual disorder. The posterior parietal cortex is a key region of pathology in PCA and memory impairment may be the result of dysfunction of parietally dependent network function rather than the medial temporal lobe dependent dysfunction that defines the storage deficits in typical Alzheimer's disease. We assessed episodic memory performance and network function in16 PCA patients and 19 healthy controls who underwent structural and resting-state functional MRI and neurop

Hippocampal-cortical structural networks in the progression of cognitive impairment: A source-based morphometry analysis in individuals with subjective cognitive decline, mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease.

Neural plasticity and memory mechanisms progressively change during pathological aging. This study aimed to identify patterns of structural covariance across Alzheimer's disease (AD) stages and their relationship with episodic memory performance. Fifty-nine AD patients, 59 patients with amnestic Mild Cognitive Impairment (a-MCI), 46 individuals with Subjective Cognitive Decline (SCD), and 49 Healthy Controls (HC) underwent neuropsychological assessment, including verbal episodic memory tests (15-Word List and Short Story) and 3 T Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). T1-weighted images were proces

Neurofilament light chain concentration mediates the association between regional medial temporal lobe structure and memory in adults with Down syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Virtually all people with Down syndrome (DS) develop neuropathology associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD). Atrophy of the hippocampus and entorhinal cortex (EC), as well as elevated plasma concentrations of neurofilament light chain (NfL) protein, are markers of neurodegeneration associated with late-onset AD. We hypothesized that hippocampus and EC gray matter loss and increased plasma NfL concentrations are associated with memory in adults with DS. METHODS: T1-weighted structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data were collected from 101 participants with DS. Hippocampus

[Developmental amnesia as a focal cognitive sequela of a neonatal pathology].

INTRODUCTION: The developmental amnesia is a recently known entity that occurs as a consequence of hypoxic-ischemic events in the perinatal period. This is a specific deficit of episodic memory with greater preservation of semantic memory and other memory components such as the immediate and working memory. It occurs in patients without apparent neurological sequelae, with normal psychomotor development and general intelligence. The developmental amnesia has been associated with bilateral involvement of the hippocampus, which is evident in some cases on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as sign

Delusion of inanimate doubles: description of a case of focal retrograde amnesia.

This paper reports the case of a patient, M.P., who developed delusion of inanimate doubles, without Capgras syndrome, after traumatic brain injury. His delusional symptoms were studied longitudinally and the cognitive impairments associated with delusion were investigated. Data suggest that M.P. did 'perceive' the actual differences between doubles and originals rather than 'confabulate' them. The cognitive profile, characterized by retrograde episodic amnesia, but neither object processing impairment nor confabulations, supports this hypothesis. The study examines the nature of object miside

Genetic variation in memory functioning.

On the basis of a review of the literature the contribution of genetic factors for individual differences in memory performance is discussed. Explorations of such influences on memory have just begun. Most of those studies that have been conducted in order to find a quantitative trait locus for memory have focused on ApolipoproteinE (ApoE). One form of this gene is strongly associated with cardiovascular disease in middle age and to late-onset Alzheimer's disease. Some studies have demonstrated an association between ApoE and memory even in non-demented individuals. Other studies have failed t

Contributions of occipital, parietal and parahippocampal cortex to encoding of object-location associations.

Events are stored in our episodic memory in varying degrees of accessibility for conscious retrieval and combined with varying amounts of associated information. A crucial aspect of episodic memory is to bind information together, e.g. linking an object to a certain location. Spontaneous or experimenter-induced variance in the allocation of attentional resources during encoding critically determines the strength of the resulting memory trace especially for associative information as measured in subsequent memory tests. The neural correlates of associative memory encoding were investigated by l

Priming of semantic autobiographical knowledge: a case study of retrograde amnesia.

The case of a 36-year-old man who suffers dense retrograde and anterograde amnesia as a result of closed-head injury that caused extensive damage to his left frontal-parietal and right parieto-occipital lobes is described. Patient K.C. has normal intelligence and relatively well-preserved perceptual, linguistic, short-term memory, and reasoning abilities. He possesses some fragmentary general knowledge about his autobiographical past, but he does not remember a single personal event or happening from any time of his life. He has some preserved expert knowledge related to the work he did for 3

Relational Memory Reconsolidation: A New Lens on Change Mechanisms in EFT for Couples.

This paper presents a new framework to account for change mechanisms in Emotion-Focused Therapy for Couples (EFT). Building on Lane et al.'s (2015) integrated memory model, the Relational Memory Reconsolidation model described here posits that EFT reshapes partners' relational memory structures through emotionally intense moments of expressed vulnerability and responsiveness. These vulnerability-responsiveness events allow partners to access and transform memories of past relational experiences (i.e., episodic memory) as well as associated beliefs about themselves and the relationship (i.e., s

Influence of late-life cognitive activity on cognitive health.

OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that late-life participation in mentally stimulating activities affects subsequent cognitive health. METHODS: Analyses are based on 1,076 older persons without dementia at study onset participating in a longitudinal cohort study. They completed annual clinical evaluations for a mean of 4.9 years. Each evaluation included administration of a self-report scale about participation in mentally stimulating activities and a battery of cognitive performance tests. Previously established measures of cognitively stimulating activity and cognitive function were derived

Intrinsic and task-dependent coupling of neuronal population activity in human parietal cortex.

Human neuroimaging studies have suggested that subregions of the medial and lateral parietal cortex form key nodes of a larger brain network supporting episodic memory retrieval. To explore the electrophysiological correlates of functional connectivity between these subregions, we recorded simultaneously from medial and lateral parietal cortex using intracranial electrodes in three human subjects. We observed electrophysiological co-activation of retrosplenial/posterior cingulate cortex (RSC/PCC) and angular gyrus (AG) in the high-frequency broadband (HFB, or high-gamma) range, for conditions

Event-related potential evidence of accessing gender stereotypes to aid source monitoring.

Source memory for the speaker's voice (male or female) was investigated when semantic knowledge (gender stereotypes) could and could not inform the episodic source judgment while event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded. Source accuracy was greater and response times were faster when stereotypes could predict the speaker's voice at test. Recollection supported source judgments in both conditions as indicated by significant parietal "old/new" ERP effects (500-800ms). Prototypical late ERP effects (the right frontal "old/new" effect and the late posterior negativity, LPN) were evident when

Recognition memory and divergent cognitive profiles in prodromal genetic frontotemporal dementia.

Although executive dysfunction is the characteristic cognitive marker of behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD), episodic memory deficits are relatively common, and may be present even during the prodromal disease phase. In a cohort of mutation carriers with mild behavioral and/or cognitive symptoms consistent with prodromal bvFTD, we aimed to investigate patterns of performance on an abbreviated list learning task, with a particular focus on recognition memory. We further aimed to characterize the cognitive prodromes associated with the three major genetic causes of frontotemporal

Diagnostic utility of Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination III in differentiating Alzheimer's disease dementia, vascular dementia, and mixed dementia.

PURPOSE: Differentiating between Alzheimer's disease (AD), vascular dementia (VaD), and mixed dementia (MD) remains a major clinical challenge, as overlapping symptoms and comorbid pathologies limit the diagnostic value of screening tools. The Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination III (ACE-III) offers a multidomain assessment and may support differential diagnosis. METHODS: The study included 138 Polish patients with mild dementia (46 AD, 46 VaD, 46 MD), matched for age, sex, and education, and diagnosed based on current clinical criteria. Group comparisons were conducted using the Kruskal-Wall

Dementia trajectory for patients with logopenic variant primary progressive aphasia.

BACKGROUND: The timing of progression of logopenic variant primary progressive aphasia (lvPPA) to severe dementia has not been elucidated. To address this shortcoming, 10 patients with lvPPA were continuously followed. METHODS: Patients were assessed with the annual rate of change in the Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR) sum of boxes and period from lvPPA onset to the onset of benchmark signs, including mild, moderate, or severe dementia, episodic memory deficits, topographical disorientation, difficulties with using controls for electronic appliances, and conceptual apraxia. When severe dementi

Neuropsychological and FDG-PET profiles in VGKC autoimmune limbic encephalitis.

BACKGROUND: Limbic encephalitis (LE) is characterized by an acute or subacute onset with memory impairments, confusional state, behavioral disorders, variably associated with seizures and dystonic movements. It is due to inflammatory processes that selectively affect the medial temporal lobe structures. Voltage-gate potassium channel (VGKC) autoantibodies are frequently observed. In this study, we assessed at the individual level FDG-PET brain metabolic dysfunctions and neuropsychological profiles in three autoimmune LE cases seropositive for neuronal VGKC-complex autoantibodies. Saccades and handedness interact to affect scene memory.

Repetitive saccades benefit memory when executed before retrieval, with greatest effects for episodic memory in consistent-handers. Questions remain including how saccades affect scene memory, an important visual component of episodic memory. The present study tested how repetitive saccades affect working and recognition memory for novel scenes. Handedness direction (left-right) and degree (strong/consistent vs. mixed/inconsistent) was measured by raw and absolute laterality quotients respectively from an 8-question handedness inventory completed by 111 adults. Each then performed either 30 s

Lateralization of memory function in temporal lobe epilepsy using scene memory fMRI.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) offers an alternative to the traditional Wada test for presurgical language and memory lateralization that carries almost no risk. However, fMRI lateralization of episodic memory remains challenging because the hippocampus, which is fundamental to episodic memory, is smaller, more prone to susceptibility artifact, and harder to functionally modulate than language regions. We previously showed that a complex scene memory task can lateralize memory function in the mesial temporal lobe. Using data acquired from N = 45 patients with temporal lobe epilep

Characterizing memory loss in patients with autoimmune limbic encephalitis hippocampal lesions.

Since the publication of Scoville and Milner's (1957) seminal paper, the precise functional role played by the hippocampus in support of human memory has been fiercely debated. For instance, the single question of whether the hippocampus plays a time-limited or an indelible role in the recollection of personal memories led to a deep and tenacious schism within the field. Similar polarizations arose between those who debated the precise nature of the role played by the hippocampus in support of semantic relative to episodic memories and in recall/recollection relative to familiarity-based recog
