Many mental disorders show marked gender differences as regards prevalence, symptomatology, risk factors or course. Other disorders do per definition only occur in women - e.g. premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) - or are markedly influenced by female specific factors such as hormonal changes over the life cycle or during reproductive processes. Current classification systems have tried to take into account these gender aspects, but some problems will certainly have to be discussed again with the next revisions of the ICD and DSM. As regards gender differences in prevalence and symptomatolo

BACKGROUND: Community care of the chronic mentally ill has always been prevalent in India, largely due to family involvement and unavailability of institutions. In the 80s, a few mental health clinics became operational in some parts of the country. The Schizophrenia Research Foundation (SCARF), an NGO in Chennai had established a community clinic in 1989 in Thiruporur, which was functional till 1999. During this period various programmes such as training of the primary health center staff, setting up a referral system, setting up of a Citizen's Group, and self-employment schemes were initiate

OBJECTIVES: We assessed the levels and correlates of posttraumatic stress reactivity (PTSR) of more than 20,000 adult tsunami survivors by analyzing survey data from coastal Aceh and North Sumatra, Indonesia.
METHODS: A population-representative sample of individuals interviewed before the tsunami was traced in 2005 to 2006. We constructed 2 scales measuring PTSR by using 7 symptom items from the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Checklist-Civilian Version. One scale measured PTSR at the time of interview, and the other measured PTSR at the point of maximum intensity since the disaster.

The objective of the study was to compare the frequency of mental disorders in cardiology outpatients to the number of patients with psychological problems identified by cardiologists. In a cardiology outpatient service, 103 consecutive patients were asked to participate in the study. Of these 86 were included and screened for mental disorder with the Primary Care Evaluation of Mental Disorders (PRIME-MD), Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV (SCID) psychosis screening, the Clock Drawing Test, and the WHO-5 Well-being Index. The cardiologists were asked to rate the severity of somatic and

The incidence of phobias in 1731 adolescents with mental disorders was estimated as 15,2%. A clinical follow-up study included 261 patients, aged 15-17 years, with ICD-10 diagnosis of phobic disorders. One third of patients was diagnosed with organic non-psychotic disorder, while one third with a disorder of endogenous cluster, the other nosologic units were represented rarely. The ratio of male to female was 6:1. Frequency allocation in a spectrum of phobic types was as follows: the fear of darkness (23%), social phobia (20,8%), with about a half of the fears being connected with the study pr

Two major epidemiological studies using standardized instruments for diagnosis have revealed that the prevalence of mental disorders in general hospital inpatients range from 41.3% to 46.5%. The most prevalent groups of psychiatric disorders among general hospital inpatients are organic mental illness, depressive disorders, and alcohol dependence or abuse. The prevalence rates of organic brain syndromes, adjustment disorders with depressed mood, and alcohol dependence in general hospital inpatients are above those of the general population. In nearly half of the studied general hospital inpati

BACKGROUND: Non-married persons are known to have poor mental health compared with married persons. Health differences between marital status groups may largely arise from corresponding differences in interpersonal social bonds. However, official marital status mirrors the social reality of persons to a decreasing extent, and living arrangements may be a better measure of social bonds. Little is known about mental health in different living arrangement groups. This study aims to establish the extent and determinants of mental health differences by living arrangement in terms of psychological d

INTRODUCTION: Autosomal recessive diseases with mental retardation are disorders that affect autosomes, and their genetic expression occurs in individuals who are homozygotic for a mutation, while heterozygotic subjects are unaffected carriers. If both parents are carriers, the theoretical possibility of their children also being carriers is 50%, the risk of the children being affected by the disease is 25%, and there is a 25% chance of their being healthy. They are an important source of mental deficiencies and inborn errors of metabolism (IEM) are some of their characteristic syndromes.

AIMS: To describe and measure differences between ethnic groups on standard measures of mental health outcome.
METHODS: Clinical staff in eight New Zealand Health Districts collected consumer outcomes data at the start, end and review of episodes of care. Consumers were allocated to one of three ethnicity groupings -- Maori, Pacific Island and "All Other".
RESULTS: There were large differences between the three ethnicity groupings on the measures. Maori and Pacific Island consumers appeared to demonstrate more psychotic phenomena and overall worse scores, and the All Other group, more depres

BACKGROUND: Methylmercury (MeHg) is a developmental neurotoxicant; exposure results principally from consumption of seafood contaminated by mercury (Hg). In this analysis, the burden of mental retardation (MR) associated with methylmercury exposure in the 2000 U.S. birth cohort is estimated, and the portion of this burden attributable to mercury (Hg) emissions from coal-fired power plants is identified.
METHODS: The aggregate loss in cognition associated with MeHg exposure in the 2000 U.S. birth cohort was estimated using two previously published dose-response models that relate increases in

The Spiritist perspective on mental disorders exerts a great influence in Brazil. Spiritist theory supports the survival of the spirit after death with an exchange of knowledge between the incarnated and disincarnated spirits. This article reviews the texts on mental disorders and Spiritism written by four leading Spiritist authors: Allan Kardec, Bezerra de Menezes, Inácio Ferreira and Joanna de Angelis. These authors advocated a model of spiritual etiology without rejecting the biological, psychological, and social causes of mental disorders. The Spiritist etiologic model for mental disorders

This article reviews selective comments on the concept of Mental Retardation (MR) in adolescents. Issues covered include the definition, prevalence, and differential diagnosis of MR. Some of the syndromes and disorders associated with MR in the adolescents are also considered with emphasis on the behavioral concerns that may be present in this age group. Finally, concepts of management by the clinician are reviewed. It is recommended that health care professionals caring for adolescents with MR should help these youths maximize their potential as human beings, helping them achieve meaningful f

The interface of women's reproductive and mental health is an evolving area of psychiatric practice, necessitating familiarity with psychobiological factors unique to women. The role of estrogen in particular has profound implications for the etiology and treatment of women's psychiatric illness, and has been reviewed along with the role of other hormones. Additionally, the stress of specific life events such as miscarriage, abortion, and menopause affects female mental health from a biological and psychosocial standpoint with the potential for secondary mood and anxiety disorders. Hyperprolactinaemia is associated with drugs used in mental health to treat psychosis (antipsychotics) and affects a significant number of service users. The condition causes endocrine disturbances, including sexual dysfunction, amenorrhoea and infertility. In the longer term, service users are also at risk of disabling conditions such as osteoporosis. Early detection of hyperprolactinaemia enables safer use of antipsychotic drugs. This article focuses on neuroendocrine adverse effects and how this problem can be addressed.

The concept of Mental Homelessness is presented and developed. This paper will provide a historical review of the connection between mental illness and housing and the changing approaches toward institutionalization and de-institutionalization over several centuries. Case illustrations from practice in Israel will be presented to highlight the theme of home, or rather the theme of lacking a home as an element which may be inherent to a mental illness. More specifically, the paper argues that homelessness is a state of flection of. If so, even if a mental patient does initially own a home, he o
