Exstrophy of the cloacal membrane. A pathologic study of four cases.

Exstrophy of the cloaca is a rare congenital anomaly. The authors add the pathologic findings of four distinct cases reported in this articl … lex anomaly is difficult. It is considered that this anomalous condition results from breakdown and mesodermal invasion of the cloacal membrane.

Craniofacial defects associated with amniotic band syndrome: a case report.

A pathological study was made of a female infant with amniotic band syndrome. At birth, the 1450-g female infant was noted to have craniofac … These observations suggested that the etiology in the present case may be consistent with Torpin's mesodermic band theory.

SDF-1/CXCR4 signal is involved in the induction of Primordial Germ Cell migration in a model marine fish, Japanese anchovy (Engraulis japonicus).

Primordial germ cells (PGCs) are pivotal for gonadal development and reproductive success. Though artificial induction of sterility by targeting PGCs are gaining popularity due to its advantages in fish surrogacy and biodiversity management, it is often skill and time intensive. In this study, we have focused on understanding the role of PGCs and the chemotactic SDF-1/CXCR4 signaling on gonad development of Japanese anchovy (JA, Engraulis japonicus), an upcoming marine model organism with eco-commercial values, with an aim to develop a novel, easy, and versatile gonad sterilization method. Our

Evolutionary assembly and disassembly of the mammalian sternum.

Evolutionary transitions are frequently associated with novel anatomical structures,1 but the origins of the structures themselves are often poorly known. We use developmental, genetic, and paleontological data to demonstrate that the therian sternum was assembled from pre-existing elements. Imaging of the perinatal mouse reveals two paired sternal elements, both composed primarily of cells with lateral plate mesoderm origin. Location, articulations, and development identify them as homologs of the interclavicle and the sternal bands of synapsid outgroups. The interclavicle, not previously rec…

Analysis of human soft palate morphogenesis supports regional regulation of palatal fusion.

It is essential to complete palate closure at the correct time during fetal development, otherwise a serious malformation, cleft palate, will ensue. The steps in palate formation in humans take place between the 7th and 12th week and consist of outgrowth of palatal shelves from the paired maxillary prominences, reorientation of the shelves from vertical to horizontal, apposition of the medial surfaces, formation of a bilayered seam, degradation of the seam and bridging of mesenchyme. However, in the soft palate, the mechanism of closure is unclear. In previous studies it is possible to find su

Benign tumors and tumor-like lesions of the adult kidney. Part II: Benign mesenchymal and mixed neoplasms, and tumor-like lesions.

In this review article the benign tumors and tumor-like lesions of the adult kidney are discussed. The incidence of benign renal tumors is low, especially when compared to renal cell carcinomas, as most are detected incidentally or at autopsy. Some of these tumors, as their names imply, are unique to the kidney, e.g., renal adenoma, metanephric adenoma, renal oncocytoma, nephrogenic adenofibroma, mesoblastic nephroma, capsuloma, juxtaglomerular cell tumor, renomedullary interstitial cell tumor (medullary fibroma), cystic nephroma, cystic partially differentiated nephroblastoma, and cystic hama

Role of Interstitial Cells of Cajal and their relationship with the enteric nervous system.

The term 'Interstitial cells of Cajal' (ICC) designates several groups of mesenchymal cells present along the gastro-intestinal tract (GI), in close association with smooth muscle cells and elements of the enteric nervous system (ENS). For years, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) has been the only reliable tool to study ICC. Whilst TEM remains the golden standard for identification of ICC, the observation that the tyrosine kinase receptor c-kit plays a crucial role in their development recently resulted in numerous immunohistochemical studies and also led to a better characterization of t

Increases in the number of cells in different areas of epithelial somites related to changes in morphology and development.

There are two distinct groups of cells in the epithelial somite: cells in the epithelial ball that form the periphery, and loose mesenchymal cells found in the central cavity (somitocoele). Recent work has produced evidence to show that these two groups of cells have significant differences (morphology, origin, fibronectin content, reaction to peanut lectin, communication properties) but the significance of these differences has yet to be established. It is not yet clear whether the epithelial somite stage of development is merely a time for cell proliferation, or whether it is a time when sig

Cutaneous mesenchymal hamartoma.

A case of a cutaneous mesenchymal hamartoma occurring on the thigh of a newborn infant is reported. Microscopically, the solitary tumorous lesion consisted of an intimate mixture of fibrocollagenous bundles, islands of mature fat cells, distorted blood vessels, and eccrine sweat glands. Many mast cells were scattered throughout the fibrocollagenous bundles. Ultrastructurally, most tumor cells were suggestive of undifferentiated mesenchymal cells.

The contribution made by a single somite to the vertebral column: experimental evidence in support of resegmentation using the chick-quail chimaera model.

The somitic involvement in the formation of the vertebral column was examined using the chick-quail chimaera model. Single cervical somites from quail donor embryos were transplanted into similarly staged chick host embryos. Following further incubation, serial sections of variously staged embryos were stained with the Feulgen reaction to distinguish the two cell populations. Quail cells were generally located within a delimited region in one half of each of the two adjacent vertebrae, as well as in the intervening disc. The horizontal plane of division through each vertebra passed approximate

A Huge Penile Fibroepithelial Polyp Treated with Partial Penectomy: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Fibroepithelial polyps are benign tumors of mesodermal origin that usually arise on the surface of the skin and to a lesser extent in the urinary tract; however, their presence on the penis is extremely unusual. We report the case of a 73-year-old male with an extremely large broad-based penile fibroepithelial polyp (FEP) involving the penile shaft and glans penis associated with chronic condom catheter use and that was treated with partial penectomy. A review of the literature is included to highlight the rarity of this case. To the best of our knowledge, this is the largest mass of its kind …

Striking contiguous depigmentation across the lower limbs in piebaldism and its implications for understanding melanocytic migration and development.

Piebaldism is a rare autosomal dominant disorder of pigmentation that is characterized by variable patches of depigmentation on the face, ch … ach leg. We propose that our cases, and other similar cases, can be explained by a recent theory of mesodermal melanocyte migration.

Ureteral Polyp Managed by Endoscopic Techniques.

Fibroepithelial polyps (FEPs) are rare benign tumors of mesodermal origin. They are found in the ureters 85% of the time, with the remainder located in the renal pelvis and occasionally the bladder. FEPs can present as flank pain, lower abdominal pain, and/or gross hematuria. Previous literature reports management of these benign lesions using open surgical techniques, laparoscopic techniques, and endoscopic management. In this article, the authors present their pure endoscopic management of a large ureteral polyp and a review of the current literature outlining the etiology, clinical presenta…

Osteoma-like melorheostosis: a rare type of skeletal dysplasia depicted on FDG PET/CT.

Melorheostosis, also known as Leri's disease, is a rare benign form of mesodermal mixed sclerosing bone dysplasia. We report the unusual case of a 14-year-old boy with melorheostosis in the lower extremity that went undiagnosed due to concurrent Ewing sarcoma in the opposite limb, confounding the findings for metastatic disease. The diagnosis was made on FDG PET/CT when the patient presented for post Ewing sarcoma treatment follow-up. The different types of melorheostosis as well as the challenge of diagnosing this rare entity are discussed in this report.

Oropharyngeal Hairy Polyp Causing Dysphagia.

Hairy polyp is a rare, benign tumor that comprises ectodermal and mesodermal germ layers. The embryogenesis of hairy polyp is precisely unknown, and concurrently, it has a female predominance. Although hairy polyp is observed in every part of the body; it is frequently located in the nasopharynx and oropharynx. Respiratory distress and feeding difficulties are the most related symptoms. Differential diagnoses comprise hemangioma, teratoma, epidermoid cyst, neuroblastoma, and meningocele. In this report, a seven-year-old patient who was admitted to our clinic with swallowing difficulty because …

Dentinogenesis Imperfecta : A Family which was Affected for Over Three Generations.

Dentinogenesis Imperfecta (DI) or hereditary opalescent dentin is inherited in a simple autosomal dominant mode with high penetrance and low mutation rates. It generally affects both the deciduous and the permanent dentitions. DI corresponds to a localized form of mesodermal dysplasia which is observed in the histo-differentiation. An early diagnosis and treatment are therefore fundamental, which aim at obtaining a favourable prognosis, since at late intervention makes the treatment more complex. We are presenting here a case of DI in which the disease affected the three generations of a famil…

Three cases of focal dermal hypoplasia (Goltz syndrome).

Focal dermal hypoplasia or Goltz syndrome is a rare genodermatosis, characterized by multiple abnormalities of ectodermal and mesodermal origin. It is found predominantly in females and is characterized by hypoplasia of skin and papillomas. Three cases of focal dermal hypoplasia in infancy with unusual inheritance patterns are reported. Cutaneous features were atrophic reticulated scars involving the trunk and extremities following the lines of Blaschko. Papillomas were present on the genitalia and in a periorificial distribution. Skeletal abnormalities included syndactyly, polydactyly and lob…

An unusual cause of complete distal ureteral obstruction: giant fibroepithelial polyp.

Fibroepithelial polyp of the ureter is a rare benign neoplasm of mesodermal origin. It is an extremely rare cause of hydronephrosis in children. It usually causes partial ureteral obstruction without loss of renal function. The preferred treatment is endoscopic or surgical resection of the polyp with preservation of the renal unit. The authors present an adolescent patient with a nonfunctioning left hydronephrotic kidney caused by complete ureteral obstruction caused by a giant fibroepithelial polyp of the distal ureter. This is an extremely rare presentation and outcome of this benign uretera…
