A clinical study on the comparative effectiveness of micronutrient supplementation and physiotherapy in oral sub-mucous fibrosis.

Oral Sub-mucous Fibrosis (OSMF) is a chronic, progressive, potentially malignant disorder linked to areca nut chewing. Multiple therapies have been tried, but no consensus exists on the most effective approach. Therefore, it is of interest to compare the effectiveness of micronutrient supplementation and physiotherapy in managing OSMF. Patients with OSMF were randomly assigned to receive either micronutrient supplementation (Group A) or structured physiotherapy (Group B). Outcomes assessed included mouth opening and burning sensation at baseline and follow-up. Both groups showed symptomatic im

Applying photovoice and human-centered design to contextualize an adolescent micronutrient supplementation intervention in Mozambique.

BACKGROUND: Globally, iron-deficiency anemia is the most common micronutrient deficiency and a leading cause of disability-adjusted life years lost among adolescent girls 10-19 years of age. Adolescent girls' voices are often excluded from shaping the interventions and policies designed to support them. We used participatory formative research methods-photovoice and adolescent-centered design (ACD)-to explore nutrition-related challenges, opportunities, and preferences among adolescent girls in Monapo District, Mozambique, and used the findings to contextualize a nutrition curriculum and suppl

Elevated CO2 decreases micronutrient Zn but not Fe in vegetables - evidence from a meta-analysis.

With carbon dioxide (CO2) levels continuing to rise in the coming decades and threatening agro-ecosystems worldwide, it is crucial to understand the impact of elevated CO2 on global food production and security. Elevated CO2 levels have been found to reduce micronutrients such as Zinc (Zn) and Iron (Fe) in staple crops, potentially exacerbating the already existing global micronutrient deficiency issue. However, as vegetables serve as another key source of micronutrients, it remains uncertain to what extent this negative effect on micronutrient levels also applies to them. To address this, we …

Prenatal multiple micronutrient supplementation in the Parepare district, Indonesia; population characteristics and intake adherence.

BACKGROUND: Micronutrient deficiencies among pregnant women remain highly prevalent in low and middle-income countries. Multiple micronutrient supplementation (MMS) has been proven more beneficial than standard iron-folic acid supplementation in reducing adverse pregnancy outcomes. Limited data on adherence to MMS in pregnant women in programmatic settings is available. Therefore, our study aims to assess adherence to the recommended intake of a multiple micronutrient supplement (UNIMMAP-MMS) in relation to demographic characteristics alongside a community-based MMS program. METHOD: A prospec

Hidden Hunger in Pediatric Obesity: Redefining Malnutrition Through Macronutrient Quality and Micronutrient Deficiency.

Background: Pediatric obesity exemplifies the paradox of energy excess coexisting with nutritional inadequacy. Despite high caloric intake, children with obesity often display deficiencies in essential macro- and micronutrients that impair growth, metabolic regulation, and long-term health. This review critically examines the mechanisms underlying malnutrition in pediatric obesity, emphasizing the interplay between dietary quality, inflammation, microbiota alterations, and biomarker profiles, and identifies research gaps limiting precision nutrition approaches. Methods: A comprehensive narrati…

Clinical Benefits and Safety of Multiple Micronutrient Supplementation During Preconception, Pregnancy, and Lactation: A Review.

OBJECTIVE: In this review we sought to determine the clinical benefits and safety of a multiple micronutrient supplement/supplementation (MMS) throughout preconception, pregnancy, and lactation in the mother and their child. BACKGROUND: No guidelines for pregnancy specifically recommend supplementation with micronutrients other than folic acid and iron or continuing the use of MMS beyond the first trimester. Yet micronutrients are essential during all stages of pregnancy for healthy fetal growth and development and maternal health, with an increased intake of many micronutrients recommended d…

Does micronutrient supplementation improve outcomes in adult gastrointestinal surgery patients? A systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Gastrointestinal surgery can result in short-term (in hospital) complications such as infections, post-operative ileus and poor wound healing and longer-term (post-discharge) complications such as intestinal failure, malnutrition and loss of bone mass. These complications can severely impact the patient and increase healthcare costs. Impaired immunity, excessive inflammation and oxidative stress can contribute to postoperative complications and poor outcome. Many micronutrients support immunity and help to control inflammation and oxidative stress. Therefore, providing micronutri…

Dietary variability and micronutrient status of individuals with Yaws infection in Ghana: A case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Yaws is a neglected tropical skin disease mainly affecting children under 15 years. It is targeted for eradication by 2030 through Mass Drug Administration (MDA) of a single oral dose of azithromycin (30 mg/kg), which has achieved about a 95% cure rate. Despite this, the disease persists in endemic countries. Eradication requires addressing contributing factors, including the role of nutrition in yaws; yet this remains underexplored. This study assessed the nutritional status of individuals in yaws-endemic areas using a case-control design. METHODS: A case-control study was conduc

Micronutrient Improvement of Epithelial Barrier Function in Various Disease States: A Case for Adjuvant Therapy.

The published literature makes a very strong case that a wide range of disease morbidity associates with and may in part be due to epithelial barrier leak. An equally large body of published literature substantiates that a diverse group of micronutrients can reduce barrier leak across a wide array of epithelial tissue types, stemming from both cell culture as well as animal and human tissue models. Conversely, micronutrient deficiencies can exacerbate both barrier leak and morbidity. Focusing on zinc, Vitamin A and Vitamin D, this review shows that at concentrations above RDA levels but well b…

Clinical Significance of Micronutrient Supplementation in Critically Ill COVID-19 Patients with Severe ARDS.

The interplay between inflammation and oxidative stress is a vicious circle, potentially resulting in organ damage. Essential micronutrients such as selenium (Se) and zinc (Zn) support anti-oxidative defense systems and are commonly depleted in severe disease. This single-center retrospective study investigated micronutrient levels under Se and Zn supplementation in critically ill patients with COVID-19 induced acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and explored potential relationships with immunological and clinical parameters. According to intensive care unit (ICU) standard operating pro…
