The histologic and ultrastructural findings in a fatal human case of Marburg hemorrhagic fever are reported. Marburg virus was isolated from fluids and tissues and was identified in tissues by immunohistochemistry and electron and immunoelectron microscopy. Dacryoliths are uncommon causes of partial or complete obstruction of the nasolacrimal drainage apparatus. We report our findings of a dacryolith that we studied by culture, light microscopy, atomic absorption spectrophotometry, and scanning electron microscopy. Although no fungi were recovered by culturing, hyphae-like structures were observed. No inorganic material was detected by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Scanning electron microscopy of ultrastructure showed the stone was composed of lobes and lobules built on an amorphous core material.

BACKGROUND: The tips of modern thin Quincke-type spinal needles may be easily damaged by bone contact during the puncture. The purpose of this study was to find out the frequency of tip deformation in routine clinical work and the appearance of the dural perforations made by such damaged needles.
METHODS: Two hundred and ninety-five Quincke-type needles (22G-29G) used in routine spinal anaesthesia were inspected by light microscopy. Scanning electron micrographs were taken of some of the damaged tips and of experimental dural perforations made by these.

Four cases of malignant lymphomas in elderly patients are reported, along with the results of immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy. Light microscopy revealed that three cases consisted of diffuse neoplastic proliferation of medium-sized lymphocytes (diffuse) lymphoma, medium-sized cell type), while the remaining one showed follicular neoplastic proliferation of medium-sized lymphocytes (follicular lymphoma, medium-sized cell type). Immunohistochemical analysis revealed that most of the tumor cells in three cases had weak to moderate immunoreactivity for L26 and weak reactivity for IgM.

A case of jaundice due to canalicular cholestasis during amiodarone therapy is reported. A definite diagnosis was attained by ultrastructural evidence of a phospholipidosis pattern, a characteristic amiodarone-induced injury. Jaundice occurred within the third month of therapy. Serum bilirubin levels continued to increase in the two weeks following drug withdrawal. A slow decrease was observed in the following three months. Only four cases of jaundice associated with amiodarone therapy have been reported until now.

Twenty-two hysterectomy specimens were collected over a period of two decades in order to investigate the morphological sequence of menstrual desquamation and its consecutive remodeling of the endometrium.
