Threshold and stability results for an epidemic model with an age-structured meeting rate.

This paper examines threshold and stability results for simple mathematical models for the transmission of infectious diseases with permanent natural immunity. Examples of such diseases are measles, chicken-pox, hepatitis, and mumps. An important feature of this work is the introduction of an age structure into the population amongst whom the disease is spreading and, in particular, the realization of the fact that the contact rate itself may depend on age. Equilibrium and stability analyses are performed on these models. These results are in part directed towards establishing conditions suffi

Nonrandom sampling in human genetics: skewness and kurtosis.

When a multivariate normal sample is chosen from a truncated space of one of its components one can no longer make use of the normality assumption for the sample observations or for the estimates derived from them. In this paper, skewness and kurtosis for each component are derived analytically under a broad class of nonrandom sampling. It is shown that the distortions in skewness and kurtosis produced by nonrandomness are negligible, except those for the component with respect to which the selection of sampling regions is based. The usual tests of normality from sample values of skewness and

Consanguinity in multifactorial inheritance. Application to data on congenital glaucoma.

The increase of parental consanguinity in multifactorial inheritance is evaluated by calculating the expected incidence of affected children whose parents are first cousins, using several values, namely for condition frequency and heritability of liability. This increase is compared to the expected increase in recessive inheritance, when one or more loci are involved. The method is illustrated by examples of recessive and multifactorial conditions and applied, as a test of discrimination between different modes of inheritance, to data on congenital glaucoma.

Nonlinear association structures in flexible Bayesian additive joint models.

Joint models of longitudinal and survival data have become an important tool for modeling associations between longitudinal biomarkers and event processes. The association between marker and log hazard is assumed to be linear in existing shared random effects models, with this assumption usually remaining unchecked. We present an extended framework of flexible additive joint models that allows the estimation of nonlinear covariate specific associations by making use of Bayesian P-splines. Our joint models are estimated in a Bayesian framework using structured additive predictors for all model

The special case of the 2 × 2 table: asymptotic unconditional McNemar test can be used to estimate sample size even for analysis based on GEE.

OBJECTIVES: Aligning the method used to estimate sample size with the planned analytic method ensures the sample size needed to achieve the planned power. When using generalized estimating equations (GEE) to analyze a paired binary primary outcome with no covariates, many use an exact McNemar test to calculate sample size. We reviewed the approaches to sample size estimation for paired binary data and compared the sample size estimates on the same numerical examples. STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: We used the hypothesized sample proportions for the 2 × 2 table to calculate the correlation between

Personality correlates of pathological gambling derived from Big Three and Big Five personality models.

Personality traits have proved to be consistent and important factors in a variety of externalizing behaviors including addiction, aggression, and antisocial behavior. Given the comorbidity of these behaviors with pathological gambling (PG), it is important to test the degree to which PG shares these trait correlates. In a large community sample of regular gamblers (N=354; 111 with diagnoses of pathological gambling), the relations between measures of two major models of personality - Big Three and Big Five - were examined in relation to PG symptoms derived from a semi-structured diagnostic in

Integrative analysis of intracranial pressure and R-R interval signals: a study of ICP B-wave using causal coherence.

Causal coherence analysis was applied to beat-to-beat mean intracranial pressure (ICP) and RR interval signals that were recorded from twelve normal pressure hydrocephalus patients. Data were organized into two groups including an ICP B-Wave group and a control baseline group. Maximal classic coherence between ICP and RR interval within [0.04-0.15] Hz was found to be significantly greater than zero for both B-wave and control groups. Causal coherence analysis further revealed that feedforward coherence due to RR interval's effect on ICP always exists for both B-wave and baseline ICP state whil

Hotelling's T2 multivariate profiling for detecting differential expression in microarrays.

The most widely used statistical methods for finding differentially expressed genes (DEGs) are essentially univariate. In this study, we present a new T(2) statistic for analyzing microarray data. We implemented our method using a multiple forward search (MFS) algorithm that is designed for selecting a subset of feature vectors in high-dimensional microarray datasets. The proposed T2 statistic is a corollary to that originally developed for multivariate analyses and possesses two prominent statistical properties. First, our method takes into account multidimensional structure of microarray dat

Discrete wavelet transform for analysis of spike-wave discharges in rats.

In this paper, the discrete wavelet transform (DWT) as a feature extraction method was used in representing the spike-wave discharges (SWD) records of WAG/Rij rats. The SWD records of WAG/Rij rats were decomposed into time-frequency representations using the DWT and the statistical features were calculated to depict their distribution. The obtained wavelet coefficients were used to identify characteristics of the signal that were not apparent from the original time domain signal. The present study demonstrates that the wavelet coefficients are useful in determining the dynamics in the time-fre

Impulsive and premeditated aggression: a factor analysis of self-reported acts.

Although aggression research in general has been hampered by a lack of objective measurements of aggressive acts, two types of aggressive acts, impulsive vs. premeditated, have been studied extensively in recent years. These two types of aggression have been primarily measured by structured or semi-structured interviews. The current study was designed to assess the construct validity of these two types of aggression using a self-report questionnaire which included items gleaned from the content of interviews used in past studies. For this study, 216 college students assessed their own aggressi

An artificial intelligence method for predicting postoperative urinary incontinence based on multiple anatomic parameters of MRI.

BACKGROUND: Deep learning methods are increasingly applied in the medical field; however, their lack of interpretability remains a challenge. Captum is a tool that can be used to interpret neural network models by computing feature importance weights. Although Captum is an interpretable model, it is rarely used to study medical problems, and there is a scarcity of data regarding MRI anatomical measurements for patients with prostate cancer after undergoing Robotic-Assisted Radical Prostatectomy (RARP). Consequently, predictive models for continence that use multiple types of anatomical MRI mea

High-throughput concentration-response analysis for omics datasets.

Omics-based methods are increasingly used in current ecotoxicology. Therefore, a large number of observations for various toxic substances and organisms are available and may be used for identifying modes of action, adverse outcome pathways, or novel biomarkers. For these purposes, good statistical analysis of toxicogenomic data is vital. In contrast to established ecotoxicological techniques, concentration-response modeling is rarely used for large datasets. Instead, statistical hypothesis testing is prevalent, which provides only a limited scope for inference. The present study therefore app

Evaluation of stochastic trajectory-based epidemic models using the energy score.

Scoring rules are critical for evaluating the predictive performance of epidemic models by quantifying how well their projections and forecasts align with observed data. In this study, we introduce the energy score as a performance metric for stochastic trajectory-based epidemic models. As a multivariate extension of the continuous ranked probability score (CRPS), the energy score provides a single, unified measure for time-series predictions. It evaluates both calibration and sharpness by considering the distances between individual trajectories and observed data, as well as the inter-traject

No cure for cure models: killed by competing risks.

Cure models have become increasingly popular over the last couple of decades. An appealing element of cure models is the idea that part of the population is immune to the event of interest. We argue that, in medical applications, the use of cure models is limited. Thus, true cure cannot exist if the event of interest includes death, as death is inevitable, and if death is excluded then competing risks must be accounted for. In this case, we find it more natural to model the cumulative incidence of both the event of interest and competing events over time, avoiding unreliable estimates at infin

Fitting high-dimensional mixture cure models using the hdcuremodelsR package.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Time-to-event outcomes are often of interest in biomedical studies. When the dataset includes long-term survivors or subjects who will not experience the event of interest, mixture cure models (MCMs) should be fit. Further, it is clinically relevant to identify molecular features from high-throughput assays that are associated with time-to-event outcomes, both to elucidate important pathways and to identify molecular features that may be therapeutic targets or for developing improved risk stratification systems. Herein, we describe our hdcuremodelsR package that can b

An empirical evaluation of approximate and exact regression-based causal mediation approaches for a binary outcome and a continuous or a binary mediator for case-control study designs.

BACKGROUND: In the causal mediation analysis framework, several parametric regression-based approaches have been introduced in past years for decomposing the total effect of an exposure on a binary outcome into a direct effect and an indirect effect through a target mediator. In this context, a well-known strategy involves specifying a logistic model for the outcome and invoking the rare outcome assumption (ROA) to simplify estimation. Recently, exact estimators for natural direct and indirect effects have been introduced to circumvent the challenges prompted by the ROA. As for the approximate

A practical overview and decision tool for analyzing recurrent events in mental illness: A review.

Mental illnesses are chronic conditions in which an individual will often experience recurrent outcomes such as hospitalization, symptomatic relapse or self-harm behaviours. Most clinical research in psychiatry considers only the first event, and does not analyze subsequent recurrent events. Methods exist to analyze recurrent events; however, these methods are underused in the psychiatric research literature. This review identifies that recurrent events can be analyzed using a time homogenous or time-to-recurrent-event (TTRE) framework. The TTRE framework is underutilized in psychiatric resear

Fitting a shared frailty illness-death model to left-truncated semi-competing risks data to examine the impact of education level on incident dementia.

BACKGROUND: Semi-competing risks arise when interest lies in the time-to-event for some non-terminal event, the observation of which is subject to some terminal event. One approach to assessing the impact of covariates on semi-competing risks data is through the illness-death model with shared frailty, where hazard regression models are used to model the effect of covariates on the endpoints. The shared frailty term, which can be viewed as an individual-specific random effect, acknowledges dependence between the events that is not accounted for by covariates. Although methods exist for fitting
