The status of third molars was studied radiographically in 108 male and 124 female Jordanian students (mean age, 20.4 years). The results showed that 9.1% of third molars were congenitally missing. Approximately 73% of the subjects had all four third molars, 12% had three third molars and 11% had two third molars. Only 1.7% had agenesis of all third molars. Sixty-one mandibular molar teeth with clinically manifest pulpitis, which required endodontic therapy, were studied. Twenty-seven subjects received standard inferior alveolar nerve block (IANB) with 2% lidocaine HCI with 1:100,000 epinephrine and 34 subjects received IANB with 3% mepivacaine with no vasoconstrictor. Pulpal anesthesia was assessed with dichlorodifluormethane (DDM). The efficacy of 5 treatment modalities for secondary retention of permanent molars was evaluated in 62 patients with 92 affected molars. The results showed that a prosthetic build up is a proper treatment if secondary retention develops late in or after the growth spurt. A total of 297 children aged 5-7 whose first permanent molars appeared in various periods were followed up. Local prevention of caries was carried out in these children with Soviet fluorine lacquer and sealing of fissures and anatomic hollows in molar masticatory surface. The efficacies of these two prevention methods proved to be different. In children whose first permanent molars appeared early or late fissure closing with vitacryl proved to be effective whereas in those whose molars appeared in time both methods were effective.

Orthopantomographic films and anamnestic data of 1553 orthodontic patients presenting four third molars were evaluated for tooth agenesis. Agenesis was found in 94 patients (6.1%). There were no significant differences between male and female patients. The most commonly missing teeth were the lower second premolars followed by the upper lateral incisors and the upper second premolars in decreasing order of frequency. Compared with the data in the literature, these results suggest that agenesis occurs less frequently in patients with anlage of all four third molars.

A total of 500 orthopantomographic X-rays of Mexican children and teenagers of either sex, aged 7-18, were studied in order to ascertain the development and calcification stages of their third molars, as well as the most frequent anomalies related with them. The results of a combined treatment of 41 patients with chronic periodontitis of lower molars are described. The four-stage technique of hemisection is presented in detail: (1), endodontic treatment of a preserved root; (2), crown reconstruction beneath the root in the form of the premolar; (3), separation of the afflicted root from intact ones using an improved set of minute instruments; (4), diseased root extraction. The recommendations are given to improve the orthopedic treatment.

Direct pulp capping with a hydroxyapatite ceramic in rat molars induced the formation of reparative dentin in the exposure sites after 2 weeks. In addition, foci of acute and chronic pulpitis were detected. After 6-8 weeks of application of the material partial or total necrosis occurred. The use of hydroxyapatite as a possible pulp capping material is discussed.
