BACKGROUND: Fluoroquinolones (FQNs) are related to several central nervous system side effects. This review aims to evaluate the clinical-epidemiological profile, pathophysiological mechanisms, and management of FQNs-associated movement disorders (MDs).
METHODS: Two reviewers identified and assessed relevant reports in six databases without language restriction between 1988 and 2022.
RESULTS: A total of 45 reports containing 51 cases who developed MDs secondary to FQNs were reported. The MDs included 25 myoclonus, 13 dyskinesias, 7 dystonias, 2 cerebellar syndromes, 1 ataxia, 1 tic, and 2 un…

In 1949, Cade described "sedative effects" after injecting guinea pigs intraperitoneally with lithium (LTM) carbonate. Based on his experiments, he began treating psychiatric patients with LTM. This literature review aims to evaluate the clinical epidemiological profile, pathological mechanisms, and management of LTM-associated movement disorder (MD). Relevant reports in six databases (Excerpta Medica, Google Scholar, Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature, Medline, Scientific Electronic Library Online, and ScienceDirect) were identified and assessed by two reviewers without l

Movement disorders of the mouth encompass a spectrum of hyperactive movements involving the muscles of the orofacial complex. They are rare conditions and are described in the literature primarily in case reports originating from neurologists, psychiatrists, and the dental community. The focus of this review is to provide a phenomenological description of different oral motor disorders including oromandibular dystonia, orofacial dyskinesia and orolingual tremor, and to offer management strategies for optimal treatment based on the current literature. A literature search of full text studies us…

Phenytoin (PHT) was first synthesized as a barbiturate derivative and was approved in 1953 by the Food and Drug Administration. This work aimed to review the pathophysiology, epidemiology, clinical presentation, and treatment of PHT-associated movement disorders (MDs). Studies were searched in relevant databases (ScienceDirect, Google Scholar, Excerpta Medica, Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature, Medline, and Scientific Electronic Library Online) and were selected by two reviewers irrespective of language between 1963 and 2021. Papers of PHT-induced ataxia alone or tremor w…

Valproate (VPA) was first synthesized in 1882, but it was only in the early 1960s that its anticonvulsant properties were discovered. The aim of this literature review is to evaluate the clinical epidemiological profile, pathological mechanisms, and management of VPA-associated movement disorder (MD). Relevant reports in six databases were identified and assessed by two reviewers without language restriction. A total of 138 reports containing 362 cases of subjects who developed a MD secondary to VPA were reported. The MD identified were parkinsonism (PKN) (252), myoclonus (MCL) (54), dystonia

BACKGROUND: Lamotrigine (LMT) is a phenyltriazine derivative that was originally described as an antiepileptic drug.
OBJECTIVE: This literature review aims to evaluate the clinical epidemiological profile, pathological mechanisms, and management of lamotrigine-associated movement disorders.
METHODS: Relevant reports in six databases were identified and assessed by two reviewers without language restriction. Reports that the individuals only developed tremor or ataxia after LMT use were not included.
RESULTS: In total 48 reports of 108 cases from 19 countries were assessed. The movement diso…

Background: Despite their high lifetime prevalence, major depressive disorder (MDD) is often difficult to diagnose, and there is a need for useful biomarkers for the diagnosis of MDD. Eye movements are considered a non-invasive potential biomarker for the diagnosis of psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia. However, eye movement deficits in MDD remain unclear. Thus, we evaluated detailed eye movement measurements to validate its usefulness as a biomarker in MDD. Methods: Eye movements were recorded from 37 patients with MDD and 400 healthy controls (HCs) using the same system at five Univ

Study of motor activity is an important part of the experimental models of neural disorders of rats. It is used to study effects of the CNS impairment, however studies on the peripheral nervous system lesions are much less frequent. The aim of the study was to extend the spectrum of experimental models of anterior limb movement disorders in rats by blockade of the right anterior limb brachial plexus with the local anesthetic Marcaine (Ma), or with aqua for injection administered into the same location (Aq) (with control intact group C). Two other groups with anterior limb movement disorders un…

We present a case of recurrent bouts of irritability with arching, head extension, and lethargy in a previously healthy 10-month-old girl admitted to the PICU for acute onset of a movement disorder. The patient's vital signs and physical examination were unremarkable but recurrent bouts of abnormal movements persisted for the first 10 hours of admission in the PICU. Possible diagnoses, such as meningitis, status epilepticus, space occupying lesions, and toxic ingestions, were ruled out because of negative cerebrospinal fluid analysis, normal EEG, and negative results of other ancillary tests.

Although Huntington's disease is classically considered a motor disease, psychiatric, behavioral, and cognitive symptoms are often presenting signs of illness. Even in isolation, these comorbidities can lead to impairment in function and significant distress for patients and their families. Intended for treating psychiatrists, this review discusses the clinical presentation and treatment of Huntington's disease.

Ataxia-telangiectasia is known for cerebellar degeneration, but clinical descriptions of abnormal tone, posture, and movements suggest involvement of the network between cerebellum and basal ganglia. We quantitatively assessed the nature of upper-limb movement disorders in ataxia-telangiectasia. We used a three-axis accelerometer to assess the natural history and severity of abnormal upper-limb movements in 80 ataxia-telangiectasia and 19 healthy subjects. Recordings were made during goal-directed movements of upper limb (kinetic task), while arms were outstretched (postural task), and at rest…

Moyamoya disease is a rare cerebrovascular disease characterized by idiopathic bilateral stenosis or occlusion of bilateral internal carotid arteries and the development of characteristic leptomeningeal collateral vessels at the base of the brain. Typical presentations include transient ischemic attacks or stroke, and hemorrhage. Presentation with movement disorders is extremely rare, especially in the pediatric population. The authors describe the cases of 4 children with moyamoya disease who presented with movement disorders. Among 446 patients (118 pediatric) with moyamoya disease surgicall…

Paroxysmal non-epileptic disorders may cause episodic and paroxysmal symptoms that mimic true epileptic seizures and they must be considered in the differential diagnosis. Paroxysmal movement disorders are not uncommon in infants, but are probably under-recognised. These phenomena represent various clinical situations, characterised by intermitted and episodic disturbances of movement. Clinical experience and a detailed history and careful observation with video recording are often helpful to establish the correct diagnosis. In the large majority of the cases, paroxysmal movement disorders are…

INTRODUCTION: The management of psychogenic movement disorders is fraught with difficulties. Empathy and a non-judgmental manner are essential in dealing with patients, and a neurobiological explanation of the symptoms may help to foster trust, acceptance, understanding and recovery.
CLINICAL PICTURE: We report a 17-year-old Chinese girl with psychogenic blepharospasm. Her parents refused psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy.
TREATMENT AND OUTCOME: Placebo therapy (with parental consent) was prescribed with favourable results.
CONCLUSION: We examine the ethical considerations for and against p…

We evaluated the utility of accurate clinical and electrophysiologic characterization in the diagnosis of the rhythmic movement disorder. Seven children with an age range of 1-12 years, referred for evaluation of relatively violent nocturnal behaviors, were clinically assessed during split-screen, video-polysomnographic monitoring sessions, as they experienced unusual nocturnus movements. Differential diagnoses included self-injurious waking behaviors, seizures, and parasomnias such as somnambulism (sleepwalking), pavor nocturnus (night terrors), and the rhythmic movement disorder (headbanging

Isolated disturbances of voluntary lid movements are a symptom which has been rarely described, and to which widely differing labels have been applied. Three different symptoms can be described from the cases reported in the literature: disorder of voluntary lid closing and/or opening, cortical ptosis, and inability to keep the eyes closed for more than a few seconds ("motor impersistance"). This last symptom can be considered as an unspecific sign of brain-damage. For the disturbance of voluntary lid opening/closure, the term "cortical palsy" of lid movements is proposed. Thus this symptom ca

Recent studies have shown misdirected optic fibres in albinotic animals to the lateral geniculate body, to the visual cortex and to the superior colliculi. Since a similar anomaly was found anatomiclly and neurophysiologically in human albinos, an oculography was performed in 10 albinos. The results were identical to those found in the so called congenital nystagmus. It remains doubtful that the misdirection is an explanation for the nystagmus in albinotic humans.
