The body of a 59 year old woman underwent postmortem computed tomography (PMCT) examination prior to forensic autopsy, using a 256 slice multidetector row computed tomography scanner. A large left tension pneumothorax detected on the PMCT was considered to be a likely cause of death and this was confirmed at autopsy. In addition there was an unsuspected PMCT finding of a probable gunshot injury traversing the right orbit, facial bones and frontal sinus. This report describes a case of chronically ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm contained within the lumbar vertebral bodies that presented with dull abdominal pain. Sudden, massive hemorrhage is an uncommon, yet well-known complication of an untreated abdominal aortic aneurysm. In addition, misleading clinical and radiological findings present difficult diagnostic challenges in such cases. This report emphasizes the findings obtained with multidetector computed tomography and delineates the differentiation of this condition from similar pathologies.

We present a case of a 67-year-old man with intussusception of the right ureter associated with a fibroepithelial polyp. The concentric sign and line sign are characteristic radiological findings in intussusception, and these findings could be seen in the present case. Although this entity is rare, its radiological findings are specific. Multidetector row computed tomography and its multiplanar reconstruction make the diagnosis feasible, although the qualitative diagnosis of the tumor was difficult.

Although innominate artery transection for innominate artery compression of the trachea is recently used for prevention of life-threatening complications (e.g. massive bleeding and obstructive apnoea) in patients with neurological disorders, pre-existing tracheostomy poses a risk of mediastinal infection with sternotomy. We successfully performed innominate artery transection on such a patient via the left anterior extrapleural approach without sternotomy after confirming the anatomical configuration on three-dimensional multidetector row computed tomography angiography.

Transanal rectal injuries caused by foreign body insertion, sexual abuse, or iatrogenic procedures represent a very uncommon surgical emergency. Acute aortic valve insufficiency caused by laceration of the aortic valve cusp after blunt chest trauma is a rare condition. We report herein on a case of a 40-year-old patient who initially presented with cardiac tamponade and cardiac arrest after a traffic accident. The patient ultimately received aortic valve repair to treat acute aortic regurgitation due to multiple perforations on a single cusp, visualized on multidetector chest computed tomography scan (128 channels).

Superior vena cava obstruction is associated with multiple venous collaterals. There is an unusual pathway involving pulmonary venous collaterals in which systemic veins drain directly into the left heart, resulting in a right-to-left shunt. We report here a rare case of systemic to pulmonary venous shunt on both hemithoraces in superior vena cava obstruction associated with Budd-Chiari syndrome due to coagulopathy which was diagnosed by multidetector computed tomography angiography.

Cardiac liposarcoma in a patient manifested multiple cardiac functional complications. Three dimensional reconstruction of the heart with multidetector row computed tomography made apparent each of the cardiac complications that resulted from the tumour's invasion. On the basis of these findings, the floating mass in the pulmonary artery and the compressing mass around the superior vena cava and interatrial septum were successfully resected. Pathological examination of the mass was consistent with well differentiated liposarcoma.

We report multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) and cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) findings of a 34-year-old female with isolated left ventricular apical hypoplasia. The MDCT and CMR scans displayed a spherical left ventricle (LV) with extensive fatty infiltration within the myocardium at the apex, interventricular septum and inferior wall, anteroapical origin of the papillary muscle, right ventricle wrapping around the deficient LV apex, and impaired systolic function.
