[Conjonctival human myiasis by Oestrus ovis in southern Tunisia].

Conjunctival myiasis is the most frequent expression of ocular myiasis. It results from infestation of the conjunctiva by the larval form of flies. We report 11 cases of conjunctival myiasis to encourage ophthalmologists to be aware of the diagnosis of external ophthalmomyiasis, its complications, and its treatment. Most of the cases occurred amongst males during summer and autumn. Symptoms are related to the foreign body with a sudden evolution. We diagnosed this affection by direct observation of the larva on conjunctiva. The number of larvae ranged from 2 to 30. The larvae were identified a…

Przhevalskiana silenus myiasis among slaughter goats in northern Jordan.

During the period December 1998-May 2000, 900 local goats slaughtered at the Irbid Abattoir (northern Jordan) were examined for the larval instars of Przhevalskiana silenus. Of 900 goats, 10% (95% CI: 9,13) were infested with P. silenus larvae. Only the second and third larval instars were seen. A multiple-regression analysis (with the error variance described by the negative-binomial function) suggested that infestation depended on the month of sampling, and that infestation with live larvae was associated with a poorer carcass. The percentage of infested goats and the mean monthly total numb

Nasal myiasis by fruit fly larvae: a case report.

We report a case of human nasal myiasis caused by fruit fly larvae in a 33-year-old man who visited the south coast of Turkey. The fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster) is endemic in the southern part of Turkey. Infestation with fruit fly larvae must be considered in patients who are visiting areas of the world where Drosophila is endemic. This is the first reported case of fruit fly larvae causing human nasal myiasis. The clinical presentation and treatment strategies are discussed.

[Cutaneous myiasis over tumor-lesions: presentation of three cases].

We report three cases of myiasis in patients with tumor-lesions. The first patient, a 54-year-old male, presented with laryngeal carcinoma with extensive local involvement, forming a large tumorous mass on the front of the neck that had been irradiated, where several active larvae were seen. The other two patients, females aged 101 and 87 years, respectively, presented with skin tumors on the scalp and face, and several active larvae could be seen in these tumors. After microbiological examination of the larvae removed, the species in the first case was identified as Chrysomya, while the speci…

Pin-site myiasis: a rare complication of halo orthosis.

STUDY DESIGN: Case report. OBJECTIVE: To report a rare complication following halo placement for cervical fracture. SETTING: United States … netration, pin loosening, pressure sores, nerve injury, bleeding, and head ring migration. Pin-site myiasis is rare, with no known reports found in the literature. Poor pin-site care by the patient and her failure to keep follow-up appointments after development of the initial infection likely contributed to the development of this complication.

Furuncular myiasis caused by Dermatobia hominis, the human botfly.

Myiasis is a common travel-associated dermatosis. Travelers to many parts of Central and South America are susceptible to infestation by Dermatobia hominis. Despite the common name of human botfly, D hominis infests a broad range of mammals and is a severe pest to economically important farm animals in endemic regions. The adult female does not lay the eggs on the host. Instead, the adult female infests hosts indirectly by using blood-feeding arthropods to serve as phoretic vectors to transport the eggs. We present a patient who acquired Dermatobia when bitten by a day-active mosquito during a…

Non Hodgkins lymphoma of ethmoidal sinus with rhinoorbital myiasis.

A patient with primary non-hodgkins lymphoma of the paranasal sinuses presenting as rhinoorbital myiasis is reported. The myiasis causing species was identified as Chrysomia bezziana Villeneuve. This case demonstrates the extreme destruction caused by myiasis and the inadequacy of therapeutic options available in such patients.

Aural myiasis caused by flesh fly larva, Sarcophaga haemorrhoidalis.

During the years 1990 to 1993, four cases of aural myiasis in children, caused by the flesh fly larvae of Sarcophaga haemorrhoidalis, are reported. The patients were admitted to the Emergency Room complaining of discharging ear, otalgia, and itching. Flesh fly larvae were removed after local treatment and identified as Sarcophaga haemorrhoidalis. These cases are discussed with a review of the literature.
