The Weight of Words: An analysis of Autobiographical Narratives and Psychopathological Measures in Anorexia Nervosa.

This study aims to explore the relationship between linguistic features of the Referential Process (RP) applied to autobiographical narratives, personality dimensions, and affect regulation capabilities in a group of women diagnosed with restrictive anorexia nervosa (AN). The study included 40 female participants hospitalized with AN during an acute phase, with a mean age of 19.50 (SD = 3.8). Participants completed several assessments, including the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory 2 (MMPI-2), the Eating Disorder Inventory (EDI-3), the 20-item Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20), the

Life changes following trauma in female burn survivors: a narrative inquiry.

PURPOSE: Burn survivors endure repeated exposure to intense pain and face recurring trauma throughout social adaptation. This study explored how female burn survivors construct the meaning of their traumatic experience of a burn accident and the subsequent changes in their lives. METHODS: A qualitative study was conducted using narrative inquiry. Participants were recruited through purposive sampling, and each engaged in three in-depth interviews, resulting in a total of 21 interviews between April 18, 2024, and August 1, 2024. Each interview lasted 90 minutes on average and was conducted in

Narrative reconstruction in deaf and hearing children: A comparative study in the context of Arabic diglossia.

This study explores the narrative skills of deaf and hearing children within the context of Arabic diglossia, a linguistic environment characterised by significant differences between spoken dialects and formal written language. Using Stein and Glenn's (1979) and Bruner's (1991) frameworks, the research analyses the narrative constructions of 13 hearing and 13 deaf children in Kuwait. The findings reveal that hearing children, benefiting from consistent exposure to spoken and formal Arabic, produced more coherent and detailed narratives compared to deaf children. Hearing participants also demo

Community narratives on rural homelessness: Tales of terror and tales of compassion.

Homelessness is often assumed to be mostly confined to urban spaces, leaving experiences of homelessness in rural contexts largely unexamined. The present study aims to understand the discursive context, or public understanding, of homelessness in rural communities. We examined community narratives related to the idea of "homelessness" in rural spaces. Semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted with 70 key stakeholders from four rural communities in the U.S. State of Maine. Participants were asked to give their impressions related to homelessness in their community. We conducted a s

Qualitative inductive analysis of the lives of women with persistent cloaca based on their narratives.

PURPOSE: The study aimed to explore and describe the lives of patients with persistent cloaca (PC) from childhood to adulthood. METHODS: Semistructured interviews were conducted with nine adult patients with PC. Their experiences and thoughts regarding this disease were analyzed qualitatively and inductively. RESULTS: After classifying the experiences and thoughts of patients with PC, 13 categories were extracted. The following five themes emerged from these categories. (1) Difficulties with excretion and vaginal management because of the disease. (2) The degree of understanding of those aro

Trauma-Disclosure, Meaning-Making, and Help-Seeking in Mothers Experiencing Homelessness: Results From a Trauma-Focused, Clinical Ethnographic Narrative Intervention.

Mothers experiencing homelessness are seldom asked about past trauma that may be causal to housing instability and poor health. There are also few validated trauma-focused interventions in family shelters. To address this gap, we tested the feasibility and acceptability of the trauma-focused clinical ethnographic narrative intervention (CENI-TF) in increasing mothers' trauma disclosure, appraisal of its meaning in their lives, and help-seeking behaviors. We also present the qualitative findings to contextualize the intervention. Findings are organized under three major domains and nine subthem

The Right to Be Childfree.

In this manuscript, we start with a real life account of an Ob/Gyn experience with a young patient from the childfree movement requesting permanent sterilization. A narrative ethics approach invites the reader to experience the encounter in an immersive way for this growing issue. This approach allows readers to reflect on their reaction to the patient and consider how that can affect other patient encounters. Additionally, it explores the stigma these young patients encounter making a permanent decision to never have children. In the commentary, we explore the ethical issues in this case incl

Where do they stand? A post-structuralist examination of offense-supportive narratives constructed by men convicted of child sexual abuse.

Decisions to engage in child sexual abuse (CSA) are not motivated solely by sexual/romantic interest in children. Given the complex interplay of personal, relational, and societal factors involved, we explored the narratives men constructed around their subjective motivations for offending, situated within the post-structuralist constructs of desire, power, and ethical subjectivity. Qualitative interviews were conducted with 25 men charged/convicted of CSA. Offenses were often contextualized as attempts to satisfy sexual and/or emotional desires. While some participants reported a persistent i

4- to 15-year-old children's misinterpretation of invitations asking "about the time" as requests for temporal information in forensic interviews.

BACKGROUND: Forensic interviewers are taught to ask children invitations using the word "time" to refer to a specific episode (e.g., "Tell me about the last time he touched you."). However, children may interpret the word "time" as requesting conventional temporal information rather than narrative information. OBJECTIVE: We examined the rates at which children misinterpreted invitations containing the word "time," comparing invitations asking "about" an episode to invitations asking what "happened" during an episode. PARTICIPANTS: This study examined 827 forensic interviews of children aged

Influences of individual, text, and assessment factors on text/discourse comprehension in oral language (listening comprehension).

We investigated the contributions of multiple strands of factors-individual characteristics (struggling reader status, working memory, vocabulary, grammatical knowledge, knowledge-based inference, theory of mind, comprehension monitoring), a text feature (narrative vs. expository genre), and question types (literal and inferential)-to one's performance on discourse comprehension in oral language (listening comprehension), using data from 529 second graders. Results from explanatory item response models revealed that substantial variance in listening comprehension was attributable to difference

Deconstructing therapeutic mechanisms in cancer support groups: do we express more emotion when we tell stories or talk directly to each other?

Studies indicate that story-telling and emotional expression may be important therapeutic mechanisms. This study examined how they work together over 1 year of supportive-expressive group therapy (SET). Participants were 41 women randomized to SET. We coded emotional expression and story types (story vs. non-story) at the initial session, 4, 8, and 12 months. Women engaged in more storytelling in their initial than later sessions. In later sessions, women expressed significantly more emotion, specifically compassion and high-arousal positive affect. Direct communication (non-story) allowed mor

Using joint interviews in a narrative-based study on illness experiences.

Researchers are increasingly recognizing the usefulness of using joint interviews in research on illness experiences. However, there is limited discussion of joint interviews as a data collection method and of the factors that influence the choice to conduct individual or joint interviews. Although there are several advantages and disadvantages of both methods, the reasons that underpin the choice to use joint interviews are often not discussed in detail in the literature. Drawing from a narrative-based study on the experiences of living with motor neuron disease, we present joint interviews a

Point-of-View Video Recording Devices in Plastic Surgery: Educational Utility and Medicolegal Documentation Potential.

INTRODUCTION: Operative video supports performance review and education, but consistent surgeon point-of-view (POV) capture in plastic and r … was considered a feasible, high-value adjunct to surgical education, especially when accompanied by narration. Wider adoption for routine documentation and medicolegal utility depends less on conceptual acceptance and more on resolving current technical limits and establishing robust consent, privacy, storage, access, and governance.

Word choice is coupled with grammar: The case of kinship.

Is it true that 'grammars code best what speakers do most', as Du Bois suggested already in 1985? And do members of different cultures privi … ologically diverse languages. Using a communicative task involving the description, arrangement and narration of pictures, we establish the proportion of human reference expressions formulated as kin terms in interactive language use and show that it does indeed differ across languages. We then examine candidate predictors for the usage frequency of kin-bas …
