In addition to studies in man, animal models may serve as important tools in the detection of the etiology, biology and treatment of certain types of human cancers. Various models have become available by performing life span studies on 2 rat strains, viz WAG/Rij, BN/Bi and (WAG x BN) F1 hybrid and on Praomys natalensis. Several of these models are described. A basic prerequisite for these types of studies is the availability of animals of good quality. After a general description of the quality of laboratory animals the desirable health status of animals in cancer research is discussed.

Nitrosopiperidine (NP) was found in Syrian hamsters quantitatively in the maternal blood for more than 8 h after subcutaneous injection, whereas it disappeared from placenta, fetus and amniotic fluid within the same time period. Despite the success of immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) therapy for cancer, resistance and relapse are frequent. Combination therapies are expected to enhance response rates and overcome this resistance. Herein, we report that combining PRMT7 inhibition with ICI therapy induces a strong anti-tumor T cell immunity and restrains tumor growth in vivo by increasing immune cell infiltration. An antiserum has been developed against a M.W. 11,500 calcium-binding protein purified to homogeneity from Morris hepatoma 5123tc. The antiserum was specific and did not cross-react with an excess of two other calcium-binding proteins, calmodulin or parvalbumin. Microwave-induced hyperthermia was focused locally upon mammary adenocarcinoma implanted in C3H mice when the tumor reached 6 mm in diameter. In 54 treated mice, all tumors diminished in size after the first exposure (43 degrees, 45 min) and disappeared completely following the second treatment. No other effects from heat application were apparent. All the mice in the microwave-treated group survived the whole period of observation (4 months) without any evidence of tumor, while 18 nontreated controls died within 4 weeks after inoculation.
