Long-Term Rate of Optic Disc Rim Loss in Glaucoma Patients Measured From Optic Disc Photographs With a Deep Neural Network.

PURPOSE: This study uses deep neural network-generated rim-to-disc area ratio (RADAR) measurements and the disc damage likelihood scale (DDLS) to measure the rate of optic disc rim loss in a large cohort of glaucoma patients. METHODS: A deep neural network was used to calculate RADAR and DDLS for each optic disc photograph (ODP). Patient demographics, diagnosis, intraocular pressure (IOP), and mean deviation (MD) from perimetry were analyzed as risk factors for faster progression of RADAR. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used to compare RADAR and DDLS in their utility to d

Pathological changes or technical artefacts? The problem of the heterogenous databases in COVID-19 CXR image analysis.

BACKGROUND: When the COVID-19 pandemic commenced in 2020, scientists assisted medical specialists with diagnostic algorithm development. One scientific research area related to COVID-19 diagnosis was medical imaging and its potential to support molecular tests. Unfortunately, several systems reported high accuracy in development but did not fare well in clinical application. The reason was poor generalization, a long-standing issue in AI development. Researchers found many causes of this issue and decided to refer to them as confounders, meaning a set of artefacts and methodological errors ass

Stability Analysis of Substituted Cobaltocenium [Bis(cyclopentadienyl)cobalt(III)] Employing Chemistry-Informed Neural Networks.

Cationic cobaltocenium derivatives are promising components of the anion exchange membranes because of their excellent thermal and alkaline stability under the operating conditions of a fuel cell. Here, we present an efficient modeling approach to assessing the chemical stability of substituted cobaltocenium CoCp2+, based on the computed electronic structure enhanced by machine learning techniques. Within the aqueous environment, the positive charge of the metal cation is balanced by the hydroxide anion through formation of the CoCp2+OH- complexes, whose dissociation is studied within the impl

Altered spontaneous neural activity in the precuneus, middle and superior frontal gyri, and hippocampus in college students with subclinical depression.

BACKGROUND: Subclinical depression (ScD) is a prevalent condition associated with relatively mild depressive states, and it poses a high risk of developing into major depressive disorder (MDD). However, the neural pathology of ScD is still largely unknown. Identifying the spontaneous neural activity involved in ScD may help clarify risk factors for MDD and explore treatment strategies for mild stages of depression. METHODS: A total of 34 ScD subjects and 40 age-, sex-, and education-matched healthy controls were screened from 1105 college students. The amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (

Children With Dyslexia and Familial Risk for Dyslexia Present Atypical Development of the Neuronal Phonological Network.

Learning to read changes the brain language system. Phonological processing is the language domain most crucial for reading, but it is still unknown how reading acquisition modifies the neural phonological network in children who either develop dyslexia or are at risk of dyslexia. For the two first years of formal education, we followed 90 beginning readers with (n = 55) and without (n = 35) familial risk of dyslexia who became typical readers (n = 70) or developed dyslexia (n = 20). We used functional magnetic resonance imaging to identify the neural correlates of phonological awareness using

Towards a neurophysiological signature for fibromyalgia.

Patients with fibromyalgia (FM) show characteristically enhanced unpleasantness to painful and nonpainful sensations accompanied by altered neural responses. The diagnostic potential of such neural alterations, including their sensitivity and specificity to FM (vs healthy controls) is unknown. We identify a brain signature that characterizes FM central pathophysiology at the neural systems level. We included 37 patients with FM and 35 matched healthy controls, and analyzed functional magnetic resonance imaging responses to (1) painful pressure and (2) nonpainful multisensory (visual-auditory-t

Elevated striatal and decreased dorsolateral prefrontal cortical activity in response to emotional stimuli in euthymic bipolar disorder: no associations with psychotropic medication load.

OBJECTIVE: To examine abnormal patterns of frontal cortical-subcortical activity in response to emotional stimuli in euthymic individuals with bipolar disorder type I in order to identify trait-like, pathophysiologic mechanisms of the disorder. We examined potential confounding effects of total psychotropic medication load and illness variables upon neural abnormalities. METHOD: We analyzed neural activity in 19 euthymic bipolar and 24 healthy individuals to mild and intense happy, fearful and neutral faces. RESULTS: Relative to healthy individuals, bipolar subjects had significantly increas

Effects of transcranial direct current stimulation and neural mobilization on pain and disability in people with chronic radicular pain: a protocol for a sham-controlled randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Radicular pain is a very common condition that occurs when spine discopathy leads to nerve root damage; it radiates to the leg with somatotopic distribution. It could cause high levels of pain and disability. When it becomes chronic, central sensitization may be present, which can lead to neuropathic pain. Neural mobilization is a manual approach recommended for the treatment of this condition. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has emerged as an alternative treatment for neuropathic chronic pain in an attempt to modulate brain function. The aim of this study is to veri

Peripheral nerve remodeling in the tumor microenvironment: neuro-immune crosstalk, molecular mechanisms, and precision therapeutic.

As a crucial component of the tumor microenvironment, the nervous system modulates tumor initiation, progression, and metastasis. Conversely, tumors actively hijack and reshape neural structures to activate nerve-dependent developmental and regenerative processes that promote their own growth and survival. Despite extensive progress in tumor-neural crosstalk, the molecular mechanisms underlying neuro-immune coordination in peripheral nerve remodeling remain incompletely understood, and integrated strategies targeting this axis to overcome immunotherapy resistance are still lacking. Pumping up your predictive power for cognitive state detection with the proper GAINS.

Detecting cognitive states and impairments through EEG signals is crucial for applications in aviation and medicine and has broad applications in the field of human-machine interaction. However, existing methods often fail to capture the fine-grained neural dynamics of critical brain processes due to limited temporal resolution and inadequate signal decomposition techniques. To address this, we introduce the Spectral Intensity Stability (SIS) algorithm, a novel technique that analyzes the stability and competition of dominant brain frequency oscillations across granular timescales (≈4 ms). Altered model-based prediction error signaling in the lateral orbitofrontal cortex in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder: An fMRI study.

BACKGROUND: Compared to healthy individuals, patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) are found to rely more on model-free decision-making strategies which may underlie symptom expression. It is, however, unclear whether these behavioral differences are represented in neural alterations of model-free and model-based decision-making when tested simultaneously. METHODS: We investigated the neural signatures of 22 OCD patients and 22 matched controls who completed a two-step Markov decision-making task during functional MRI scanning. We used hierarchical Bayesian modelling and Bayesian

Bridging the self to the world: resting-state functional connectivity of the temporoparietal junction in post-traumatic stress disorder and its dissociative subtype.

BACKGROUND: The temporoparietal junction (TPJ) is a cross-network hub involved in social cognition and attention, processes which are directly impacted by symptoms observed in clinical profiles of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and its dissociative subtype (PTSD + DS). METHODS: Using SPM12 and CONN, seed-based TPJ resting-state functional connectivity patterns were analyzed in individuals with PTSD (n = 81), PTSD + DS (n = 49), and healthy controls (n = 54) using four seeds [right anterior TPJ (raTPJ), left anterior TPJ (laTPJ), right posterior TPJ (rpTPJ), left posterior TPJ (lpTPJ)].

Prenatal cocaine exposure, illicit-substance use and stress and craving processes during adolescence.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal cocaine exposure (PCE) is associated with increased rates of illicit-substance use during adolescence. In addition, both PCE and illicit-substance use are associated with alterations in cortico-striato-limbic neurocircuitry, development of which is ongoing throughout adolescence. However, the relationship between illicit-substance use, PCE and functional neural responses has not previously been assessed concurrently. METHODS: Sixty-eight adolescents were recruited from an ongoing longitudinal study of childhood and adolescent development. All participants had been followe

Machine learning approaches for predicting craniofacial anomalies with graph neural networks.

This study explores the use of machine learning algorithms, including traditional approaches and graph neural networks (GNNs), to predict certain diseases by analyzing protein-protein interactions. Protein-protein interactions (PPIs) are complex, multifaceted, and sometimes ever-changing. Therefore, analyzing PPIs and making predictions based on them present significant challenges to traditional computational techniques. However, machine learning, particularly GNNs, with their powerful ability to identify complex patterns within large, convoluted datasets, emerge as compelling and revolutionar

[Anatomical Variations to the Vertebral Artery and Posterior Inferior Cerebellar Artery are Associated with the Partial Persistence of Primitive Lateral Basirovertebral Anastomosis].

The angioarchitecture of the hindbrain is homologous to that of the spinal cord, and its vascular system can be analyzed at the longitudinal and axial structures. During embryonic development, there are two main longitudinal arteries: the longitudinal neural artery and the primitive lateral basilovertebral anastomosis. Commonly observed variations are formed by the fenestration and duplication of either the vertebrobasilar artery, or cerebellar artery, which can be observed when the primitive lateral basilovertebral anastomosis partially persists. Understanding the pattern and development of b

[An unusual case of duplication of the spinal canal].

We describe here a very rare congenital malformation, in which the vertebra Th 9 to 11 were divided into independent bodies and neural arches. The vertebral canal contained the spinal cord, whereas the space between bodies and arches was filled by nerve roots and a central remnant cord, not clearly connected to the main spinal cord. This malformation was considered as related to a fetal alcohol syndrome, with craniofacial and genitourinary abnormalities. The authors analyze, moreover the possible role of abnormal Sonic Hedgehog gene patterning in the pathogeny of this complex malformative sequ

Neural tumors of the thorax: subject review from the AFIP.

160 tumors of neural origin occurring in the thorax were analyzed. The major histological features of schwannoma, neurofibroma, neuroblastoma, ganglioneuroblastoma, ganglioneuroma, and paraganglioma are described. Radiological analysis emphasized shape and location. Calcification was relatively uncommon but may be specific. The comparatively low figures on incidence of rib and vertebral abnormalities might be increased by special studies, including vertebral tomography. Evidence of local spread such as pleura-based nodules and pleural effusion constitutes evidence of malignancy. Age may be the

Pharmacological protein targets in polyglutamine diseases: mutant polypeptides and their interactors.

Polyglutamine diseases are a group of pathologies affecting different parts of the brain and causing dysfunction and atrophy of certain neural cell populations. These diseases stem from mutations in various cellular genes that result in the synthesis of proteins with extended polyglutamine tracts. In particular, this concerns huntingtin, ataxins, and androgen receptor. These mutant proteins can form oligomers, aggregates, and, finally, aggresomes with distinct functions and different degrees of cytotoxicity. In this review, we analyze the effects of different forms of polyQ proteins on other p

Comparative analysis of deep learning models for predicting biocompatibility in tissue scaffold images.

MOTIVATION: Bioprinting enables the creation of complex tissue scaffolds, which are vital for tissue engineering. However, predicting scaffold biocompatibility before fabrication remains a critical challenge, potentially leading to inefficiencies and resource wastage. Artificial Intelligence (AI) models, particularly Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) and Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), offer promising predictive capabilities to address this issue. This study aims to compare the performance of ANN and CNN models to identify the most suitable approach for predicting scaffold biocompatibili
