There is a complex bidirectional association between chronic cough and depression, which constitutes a significant medical challenge. Epidem … mechanisms underlying this bidirectional association include the following. From the perspective of neural pathways, the cough reflex and emotional regulation share neural pathways, including the vagus nerve, brainstem, limbic system, prefrontal cortex, and other brain regions. Both patients with chronic cough and depression exhibit abnormal functional connectivi …

Developmental dyslexia (DD) is a prevalent neurodevelopmental disorder that significantly affects academic learning and social development. Although numerous brain regions have been implicated in DD under both task-based and resting-state conditions, dysfunctions in large-scale functional coordination across brain systems in DD remains poorly understood. Using AES-SDM, we conducted a meta-analysis of seed-based whole-brain functional connectivity (FC) studies, including 12 task-based studies with 226 dyslexics and 232 age-matched controls, and 7 resting-state studies with 120 dyslexics and 145

The adult cerebellum is involved in modulating most, if not all, behaviors via its direct or indirect projections throughout the central nervous system. Its involvement in higher order behaviors is most prominent in human, where the lateral cerebellum (hemispheres) has expanded along with areas in the cerebral cortex that regulate language, emotions and cognition. An important aspect of wiring of the brain, is how the circuitry is established during normal development and activity, compared to how it is established when a developmental defect occurs, such as an injury that kills cells or a gen

BACKGROUND: Itch and pain are distinct somatosensory modalities that share overlapping anatomical pathways, particularly in the peripheral nervous system. However, compared with pain, the supraspinal mechanisms underlying itch perception and modulation remain poorly understood, limiting progress in central therapeutic strategies.
METHODS: This narrative review synthesizes recent mechanistic studies-primarily from rodent models-to examine supraspinal circuits underlying itch. Relevant literature was identified through targeted database searches and reference tracking.
RESULTS: Accumulating ev

This review explores the pivotal role of the brainstem in regulating gait, highlighting its function in modulating the balance between rhythmic motor patterns and goal-directed behaviors. Gait is a voluntary motor behavior that involves the continuous interplay of rhythmic motor control and higher-order cognitive processes. Key brainstem structures, including the pedunculopontine nucleus (PPN), dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN), and gigantocellular nucleus (GiN), integrate sensory inputs, motivational states, and contextual cues to modulate locomotion. These nuclei maintain efficient motor adaptation

In a recent study, Darmohray et al. identified a brainstem pathway underlying sickness-induced sleep in mice. The authors demonstrated that immune-activated circuits in the nucleus of the solitary tract suppress wake-promoting norepinephrine signaling to promote nonrapid eye movement sleep. These findings help elucidate the neural mechanisms of sickness-induced sleep and provide new insights into sleep-immune interactions.

The cerebral operculum comprises the cortical folds of the frontal, central, parietal, and temporal lobes that overlie the insula. Although historically described as a simple anatomical "cover," the operculum is now recognized as a morphologically complex periSylvian region embedded within multiple cortico-cortical and cortico-subcortical networks. In this review, a comprehensive synthesis of opercular organization is provided, integrating topographic anatomy, structural connectivity, and vascular supply. The topographic anatomy of the operculum is described in relation to periSylvian sulcal l

Serotonergic neurons in the raphe nuclei of the brainstem play a central role in a wide range of physiological and psychological processes. These neurons form intricate neuroregulatory networks via extensive ascending and descending projections to multiple brain regions. They are critically involved in integrating and refining neural signal transmission to sustain normal physiological homeostasis, and they play pivotal roles in higher-order cerebral functions such as emotional processing, cognitive decision-making, and behavioral modulation. Functional dysregulation of serotonergic networks is

Impulsivity and compulsivity are multidimensional transdiagnostic constructs with relevance to neurocognitive and other neuropsychiatric disorders. Broadly, impulsivity is the tendency to react quickly, while compulsivity is the tendency to perform repetitive and contextually inappropriate behaviors. Multiple cortical and subcortical neural pathways, neurotransmitter systems, synaptic plasticity changes, genetic factors, and epigenetic interactions influence decision-making, reward processing, and cognitive control. In this narrative review, we discuss the neural circuitry and disease mechanis…

BACKGROUND: We present the anatomy of the short arcuate fibers (SAF) of the brain. This anatomy is not very well depicted in literature.
AIM: The aim was to study the connections of the short association fibers of the frontal lobe of the brain.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Five formalin-fixed frozen cadaveric brains were studied by using Klinger's method of white fiber dissection. The superficial gray matter was cored out and the connections of the SAF were studied. The SAF of each dissected frontal lobe were compared with the other specimens and the similarities and differences between them were r

The primary and secondary somatosensory cortices (S1 and S2) play crucial roles in processing sensory inputs from various body regions, encompassing tactile, pressure, thermal, and nociceptive stimuli. These cortices are anatomically distinct, with S1 primarily involved in mechanical and cold stimulus discrimination and S2 in the interpretation of mechanical and thermal inputs, particularly in pain perception. However, the upstream innervation patterns of the somatosensory system remain less explored. In this study, we employed a modified rabies virus (RV)-mediated transsynaptic retrograde tra

Evidence from clinical and preclinical studies has shown that the cerebellum contributes to cognitive functions, including social behaviors. Now that the cerebellum's role in a wider range of behaviors has been confirmed, the question arises whether the cerebellum contributes to social behaviors via the same mechanisms with which it modulates movements. This review seeks to answer whether the cerebellum guides motor and social behaviors through identical pathways. It focuses on studies in which cerebellar cells, synapses, or genes are manipulated in a cell-type specific manner followed by test

The human brain is a constructive organ. It generates predictions to modulate its functioning and continuously adapts to a dynamic environment. Increasingly, the temporal dimension of motor and non-motor behaviour is recognised as a key component of this predictive bias. Nevertheless, the intricate interplay of the neural mechanisms that encode, decode and evaluate temporal information to give rise to a sense of time and control over sensorimotor timing remains largely elusive. Among several brain systems, the basal ganglia have been consistently linked to interval- and beat-based timing opera

The posterior cerebellum has a critical role in human social and emotional learning. Three systems and related neural networks support this cerebellar function: a biological action observation system as part of an extended sensorimotor integration network, a mentalizing system for understanding a person's mental and emotional state subserved by a mentalizing network, and a limbic network supporting core emotional (dis)pleasure and arousal processes. In this Review, I describe how these systems and networks support social and emotional learning via functional reciprocal connections initiating a

This special focus article was prepared to honor the memory of our National Institutes of Health colleague, friend, and mentor Leslie G. Ungerleider, who passed away in December 2020, and is based on a presentation given at a symposium held in her honor at the National Institutes of Health in September 2022. In this article, we describe an extension of Leslie Ungerleider's influential work on the object analyzer pathway in which the inferior temporal visual cortex interacts with the amygdala, and then discuss a broader role for the amygdala in stimulus-outcome associative learning in humans an

Understanding how social and affective behavioral states are controlled by neural circuits is a fundamental challenge in neurobiology. Despite increasing understanding of central circuits governing prosocial and agonistic interactions, how bodily autonomic processes regulate these behaviors is less resolved. Thermoregulation is vital for maintaining homeostasis, but also associated with cognitive, physical, affective, and behavioral states. Here, we posit that adjusting body temperature may be integral to the appropriate expression of social behavior and argue that understanding neural links b

We have investigated the hippocampal connectivity of the marmoset presubiculum (PreS) and reported that major connections of PreS in the rat were conserved in the marmoset. Moreover, our results indicated the presence of several additional projections that were almost absent in the rat brain, but abundant in the marmoset, such as direct projections from CA1 to PreS. However, little is known about the connectivity between the frontal brain regions and PreS or hippocampal formation. Therefore, we investigated the distribution of cells of the origins and terminals of the presubicular and hippocam

Prior studies suggest that the cerebellum contributes to the prediction of action sequences as well as the detection of social violations. In this dynamic causal modeling study, we explored the effective connectivity of the cerebellum with the cerebrum in processing social action sequences. A first model aimed to explore functional cerebello-cerebral connectivity when learning trait/stereotype-implying action sequences. We found many significant bidirectional connectivities between mentalizing areas of the cerebellum and the cerebrum including the temporo-parietal junction (TPJ) and medial pre

The dichotomy of the cingulum bundle into the dorsal supracallosal and ventral parahippocampal parts is widely accepted; however, the retrosplenial component with its multiple alternative connections has not been revealed. The aim of this study was to delineate the microsurgical anatomy of a connectionally transition zone, the isthmic cingulum, in relation to the posteromedial interhemispheric access to the atrium and discuss the relevant patterns of glioma invasion on the basis of its fiber connections. White matter (WM) fibers were dissected layer by layer in a medial-to-lateral, lateral-to-
